I had a WORST cake a few weeks ago,it was a slot machine ontop of a sheet cake with cards, messed up the luster dust, tried to doctor it with color spray and ened up refrosting sections,90 degrees out all the colors ran and didn't even care to get a pic! i was told every one loved it regardless.so you all are brave souls for posting bad cakes!
Hi all.... been gone for a while, but now I am back and I am so glad that I ran into this thread!
I have to tip my cake pans to all of you who posted what you thought were your worst cakes! For those of you who are beginners, remember we all had to start some place!
I don't have a picture of my worst cake, but a description is just as good as a picture..... imagine, a yellow cake with strawberry jam as the filling, topped with a bit of BC and then with my first (and last!) attempt at MMF.... I di9dn't color the hot marshmallow, so I kneaded purple into it and couldn't get an even color.... it turned out marbled. I couldn't even work the MMF smoothly around the cake! I finally gave up and let everyone dig into it..... this year my daughter wants to do her own cake! ![]()
This is the most hilarious thread I have EVER read. I was up until 3 A.M. last night trying to get through it. If you need a pick me up, just take a look at this. I haven't laughed this hard in a long time.
This is my second cake, the first that I ever attempted to decorate. I did this last night. It is a Father's Day cake for my husband. It did not turn out the way I imagined it. I tried to follow Sugarshack's icing tips but I could not get the icing smooth and neat. I also did not use dowels so the cake is slanted. Never the less, the cake was very good. Four layers, 2 chocolate and 2 vanilla layers with oreo filling. I got the idea for the cake off of the food channel; I watched the wedding cake challenge. I also consider this cake my best considering that I am the mother of 3 month old twins and a 2 year old. I am surprised; I had a chance to actually finish the cake.
The picture is not good but the cake is blue and green
GE OMG this thread has now had 39684 views!! I can't believe it is still alive and well. Just goes to show EVERYONE has a bad cake day every once in a while. (ok I have them more frequently than I would like to admit)
Twinsline and ge, thanks for your overly kind words (really...overly kind!) I'll keep slugging along.....
I took photos of everything I did since I started "decorating", even the really crappy ones so I can see--someday!--how far I've come.
Glad to see this thread is still going!
I wish I had taken a picture of my Course I rainbow cake, as the instructor suggested, if only to be able to look back on it and see how far I've come. I didn't want to take pictures of something so hideous. Now I take pictures of them ALL, and as soon as I get my film developed, I"ll post them here. ![]()
I'm only on page 23 of this thread...can't wait to read the rest!
Ok, I have spent the last week searching all over the place for this gem of a cake. I dont know WHAT I was thinking. Ok, I know what I was thinking...I was thinking...my mom likes frogs. I have 2 half circles. They look like FROG EYES.
Unfortunately, the majority of people at lawschool are not nearly as innocent as I am...and this cake was dubbed the "boob cake". Since I brought cakes in every Thursday, for the last 3 years, my Thursdays have been called "Boob Cake Thursdays"
Lovely. Just how I wanted to be know.
While I searched for this fantastic demonstration of the Wilton Technique (hehehe) I also came across this Halloween Birthday cake. I still think my idea was good...execution, not so much. Especially when the pumpkin head fell off on the way to the party.
If not for the wonderful description of 'boob cake Thursdays', this picture would not have been half as funny to look at...Thank you!
I have seriously laughed my butt off through most of these posts. Although I have a lot of scary cakes from the beginning, this is probably one of the worst. I didn't know how to make flowers, I didn't know you were supposed to put a border on, and my icing is basically falling off the cake. My stepfather (who will eat just about anything) took a bite. I asked if he liked it and he wholeheartedly replied, "Not so much." LOL I have come a long way since then...my cake and icing is very good and I now add borders and real flowers. Thanks for this thread-we all need to get back to our roots for a good chuckle!! (especially one that is wearing giant cocaine covered baby booties)
Heather.
The worst cake I have ever made was my friends wedding cake I did recently. It was my first wedding cake and the week leading up to it was quite eventful. Turned out that I didn't have much time to do the cake. I started the cake at 9 p.m. and got "done" with it at 4:30 p.m. the next day--I had to bake, make icing, and decorate in that time frame. I was also in the wedding, so I was pulling double duty! It was so hot in the apartment that my icing kept melting--it just looked horrible! I have pics of better cakes, but I don't know how to upload them from photobucket.
Wow! This thread is so funny. I'm about to post some pictures I thought would never make it to this site.
This first one was for my mom's birthday. I made it before I'd learned anything about cake decorating. I saw a Woman's Day magazine with a picture on the front of a cake decorated with fondant (I think) daisies. I thought, "Hey, I could make those using marshmallows!" Well, making daisy petals out of marshmallows proved to be much harder than I'd thought. I finally gave up in frustration and mushed the marshmallows into bunnies. My husband looked at the cake, wondering why I'd made a bunny cake for a 47 year old woman. My response was, "Bunnies just happened!"
It's become a great joke between the two of us. Whenever we do something that doesn't quite turn out the way we'd planned, we say, "Bunnies just happened!"
This story is sooo funny!! I'm sitting here at work trying to hold in my laugh..making faces at the same time. "Bunnies just happened!"
LOL!!
I finally made it to the end of this post, so much fun! and I want to celebrate by posting my own "worst" cake!
This is the cake that started it all for me - I've posted before that when I couldn't find anyone local to make my wedding cake I thought "how hard can it be?" and made my own. So I took Wilton course 1. I borrowed all the pans, I baked the cakes and made the frosting ahead, drove 3 1/2 hours with them in a cooler, and then drove to the hall the morning of the wedding and put it together before I got my hair done. I used silk flowers, I forgot to level the cakes, and I forgot dowels, so I used drinking straws I found in the bar. The cake was leaning from the beginning. My fiance kept checking on me and he said we'd just stand crooked to make the cake look straight! I left, thinking oh well, it's just cake, and then while I was having my hair done, my mom stopped by my room. She said she'd just been to look at my cake, and she started crying. No, it wasn't that awful! She said she was so proud of me, and thought it was beautiful! I look at this cake now, and think "oh if I could do this over again".
The final oops was when I helped my 2 bridesmaids cut it up to serve and realized I had left the parchment paper on the cakes when I frosted them. So we were peeling paper off, what a mess! We also served the topper because, who bothers with calculating serving amounts anyways? We had about 3 times as many guests as cake. Luckily, we also had a fully stocked bar, so I don't think many men cared...
I too have a TERRIBLE cake....
I was SO embarrased by this cake! Everything that could have went wrong....went wrong. FIrst off all, I had 2 other cakes besides this one due on the same day. ANd, I am sort of a procrastinator. ok, i AM a procrastinator. THis was the last of three cakes and I had enough of cakes already.
I leveled my cakes... but they werent exactly even across the top. (half white - half chocolate so two different cakes). I figured that when I put frosting on them you wouldnt be able to notice. It was so hot it kind of melted and you definately could see. Not only that, you can tell across the whole top of the cake its WAY crooked. Its not even that pretty of a cake....I was so tired and 1/2 asleep I hardly took care to anything.
WHen i had to deliver it...I wish I would have planned this cake ahead of time because I dropped it of, and cried just about the whole way home. ![]()
WRONG CAKE!! sorry....here is the real one...
Another thing was that I was using better cream, and I could NOT get it to thicken for the life of me!!
I didnt know what to do so i added powdered sugar....didnt work. THen i made a batch of butter cream and mixed it together. What a runny mess!!
I slapped it on there and continued though. GOt to bed at 4:00 am. WOke up at 6:00 to finish....then delivered at 10:00. I thank GOD that i didnt have to be there while serving!! ![]()
PieceOfCake thoes really are not that bad, for runny buttercream it looks very good. Maybe it is the pic but I don't see the problem, I can kind of see a bit of a slope but I wish mine looked as good now. I can't do roses for the life of me. I will look a little closer but I don't think I will find anything too bad to say.
Nope didn't see anythign wrong other than you run a little close to the edge on teh kitty one but for free hand it looks good
Here's mine - it was as a thank you to my friend's in-laws for bringing me Viva towel & meringue powder from the States when they came to visit - I'm guessing they were more insulted than thanked
! It was a red velvet cake with cream cheese icing (too much cream cheese which made it difficult to decorate with!) - I'm told it tasted delicious, just as well as it is the UGLIEST cake I've ever made!!!
I was going for plain white with yellow roses, but I couldn't do roses with the cream cheese icing because it was too soft and didn't have any more icing sugar to make anything else, so I ended up panicking! I'm sure my original idea would have been fine, but sheer panic brought out the worse in me lol!
tripletmom: ok, don't be offended, cuz the cakes really not bad, but the first thing that came to my mind (not sure what this says about me) is one of those blow up dolls. It was the lips I think. I laughed out loud and yes moderators, I'm trying to keep this clean.
Heavens, no offense taken! You are right, she does look rather...plastic! I hate even looking at that pic though, one I'd rather forget! ![]()
Lush and green? Hmmmmm, not where I live (2nd major city in Holland)! As one of the most over-populated countries in Europe, it's fast losing the greenery it has left. The green and yellow colours I used on that cake are exactly the same as the local football team (ADO Den Haag), which I hadn't noticed until my other half pointed it out lol!
HERE YA GO....ENJOY! ![]()

Well see there you go there is always a good reason to be found! In the future if they bring it up just act like there was never a different reason behind it. ![]()
That really sucks about the over crowding.
spottydog... that looks like and exclamation circus gone terribly wrong
I've sat here most of the afternoon and read from page 44 to page 1 in reverse order and laughed so hard at some of the comments on here that I had to get a kleenex and wipe the tears away.. you guys are too much!!
