I think the pictures speak for themselves. I will say this cake is what inspired me to sign up for Wilton Course 1. A few quick notes about it though:
1. I didn't own ANY tips or bags. I only used ziplock bags that I cut.
2. I tried "sprinkling" silver shimmering dust but it really only DUMPS.
3. Icing recipe that I had only heard of was milk, butter, sugar. That is why my snowflakes never dried enough.
I love how this thread made me laugh. I unfortunately don't have quite as funny story about this cake. It was really just a LOT of firsts for me and it wetted my appetite for bigger and better things.
So here it is 12:45 am and I am still reading this thread. DH kicked me out of bed because I couldn't keep quiet and when I did manage not to laugh out loud I was shaking the bed with my laughing. ![]()
I was really hoping I had a picture of my cake disaster. It really wasn't so bad....to start with. I decided to make one of my girlfriends a 'purse' cake for her birthday at the end of April. I had only made 4 or 5 cakes that were not frosted while still in the Pyrex pan up to this point. None of them were hideious, but I am still new to this.
So I make this cute little thing out of two 8" rounds, cut the ends off of them so I have a flat spot and start to frosting. I filled the middle with whipped cream and raspberry filling. It was a lemon cake with pink frosting. I hadn't read about dowling at this point. (Doweling?!? Why would you need to use 'sticks' to hold your cake together?!?)
I got it all frosted up and put it in the fridge to firm up.
When I left the house it looked SO CUTE! Not perfect, but SO CUTE! I had to drop off some paperwork for a client on the way to my girlfirends office. I left the car running and the A/C on as it was one of the first semi warm days we had had so far. I was inside for LESS than 4 minutes. When I came out the cake had separated!
Massive BC failure
And to make it worse....the layers had broken into chunks!!! ![]()
I had already called my girlfriend and told her not to leave for lunch early cause I was bringing her a present. I couldn't go home and fix it. I couldn't pretend I never made it. So I took it out to her. Thank God for good friends! She was so nice and said she could tell it was beautiful before it "died". And she ate it anyway! ![]()
AND forced her coworkers to eat it too!
Now that is a good girlfriend!
Oh, and I voluntered to make a whimsical cake for a co-workers 30th on Monday. Never done that before. I may be back with pictures for this thread yet!
I don't have a picture, but I experienced my worst cake last night! I make cake pudding! I made what I call ugly cake, a devil's food bundt marbled with cream cheese/chocolate chip filling. It's really good, but obviously, pretty ugly. For some reason, Despite the fact that I tested it with a knife and did a spring test, the cake was not done all of the way through. When I let it cool and turned it out, SQPLATTTTT all over my counter goes hot molten cake. Imagine cake in blob form. So, I put it in ramekins and served it like a pudding. It was delicious. (Maybe I can market it to astronauts?)
As everyone else, this isn't my worse but it is a picture of what I think of as one of my bad ones. This was way before I became a cake decorator. It is supposed to be a book cake on top of a sheet cake, but you can hardly tell there is a sheet cake underneath. The icing isn't smooth, you can see bare spots and I couldn't get the edges to look like pages.
OK I am at work and only on page 11!!!
My god does this go for almost 40 pages! I don't think I will be able to hold this all in for that long and I work in a call center! ![]()
holly: Your cake made me stop and post. I am so sorry but your bunnies look like some sort of scary sock puppet thing.
As for my other notes well you can just imagine how I lost it when I read about the husband and the stickers my BF talks in his sleep too, it is so funny because he always starts out with something that makes sense and I will turn over mumble my response and just before I fall completely asleep again he will say something that will make me roll around laughing and wake him up not knowing what the hell happen, he will than laugh at me and we will be up for at least the next hour just trying to sort out what happen.
The ordainment looks like a space ship to me
The boots are not that bad but there right they could fit the green giant it would get second place to me but the baby would get first in my BF's book I know it. Every time a commercial comes on for dippers or baby bath stuff he yells naked babies so I know he would have flipped if he just happen upon that cake one day.
Cat litter is not something that should be added to the word cake, I'm sorry but you scared my BF when he saw me looking at that one. That one gets my vote just because I have three cats and it just does not sit right with me. I am sorry you did do a good job but there is just so much a girl can take.
I have only made a few cakes in my life since I just started this decorating thing, I have many before but only 3 have I really tried to do this, my true second cake is a travesty, it is so bad that I could not even finish it and since it is still sitting on my table I can take a pic but my BF said the water on top looked like sewage water. I posted the story on the disaster cake thread but I left out any pics of the first failed attempt that I abandoned. I will post it hear later when I get home if you guys want, but trust me it is not a pretty site. ![]()
I might post my first cake???
If you want to hear about the story of this cake it is hear

I can't believe this thread is still alive!
Some how it got off of my watch list and I just happened to see it come up and could not believe how many more responses it has!
yukisaru- Just a word of warning if you are only on page 11, It gets worse from there, and about page 26 I did a bad thing! ![]()

You might wanta wait until you are home so you can laugh out loud! ![]()
Thank you to all who have posted to this thread. I have been home all day with a sick child, who has been sadly neglected for the past hour as I have scrolled through the pictures absolutely howling with laughter. Although she's only 8, my sickie is my cake decorating partner and we have had some rather interesting creations of our own. As laughter is the best medicine, I'll let her look through these when she gets up again!
WOW.....you guys are so funny. I love this thread.
Ok I am at page 24, rotflmao I swear this site is going to get me fired. I read the line about the dolphin accident just before I got a call and I swear I ripped every muscle in my neck and face trying not to laugh.
DiscoLady I am really sorry but you shrek and Chewbacca look Asian? Was that meant to be?
Stop now while you still have a job!!! LOL Page 26 is a doozie--don't say you weren't warned!!
This is my worst cake so far. I call it "My Hoochy Mamma Princess Cake". It was going great until I tried to do the eyes. I had just washed out my tip and of course I didn't dry it or test it out before I used it and black ran out all over. So I had to cover it up with more black. The lips were also a little large. Thank goodness she was just for my Daughter, and she loved it.
OMG!! LMAO!!! ![]()

The sad thing is, all these cakes look nicer than ones I usually see at the bakeries! The hootchie Barbie/Cindy cakes would go over fine! Plus, they are all waaay better than anything I could ever do.
You guys are killing me!! ![]()
I can't be held responsible for those who get fired because of excessive laughing...I believe I have a disclaimer about it a few pages back!! I had no idea the turnout this thread would get when I started it...I mean I know I had some bad cakes, but I didn't realize everyone else did too!!! ![]()
I never thought that my gigantic booties would get nominated for a contest...its just sad that its for worst cake ![]()

...just kidding guys...I'm still laughing about them!!
This was my first cupcake cake. Someone on here did a GREAT Cookie Monster cupcake cake and I couldn't find the picture once I was ready to make it. I decided to wing it. BIG mistake.
Let the laughter commence.
Okay that's just scary! I may not do ever do laundry again! It's sliding off of that board and I know it'll get me...I just know it!!!
GE I have come to your rescue! I will take your boots off the top with this cake. It is hideous! ![]()
I just pray I don't have another to add tonight.
This cake was going to be my second cake but it just fell apart after the fondant was put on it. I still painted the top trying to save it but that I think only hade it worse! The second version of this cake is in my archive so you guys can get an idea of what I was trying to achieve. The second one is not that great but I always aim for the hardest things and than when I fail I work my way down. ![]()
I am one of those who will not take a picture if it doesn't turn out. I did a birthday cake for some Irish friends that were preparing to go to Ireland for a vacation. I thought I was being nice to make them an "Irish" themed cake and instead I'm sure I insulted them. It was a basic round white cake with bc clovers on top--it was soooo ugly. Actually, because they are true friends they still appreciated it. As you gain experience you're supposed to get better, so it was a real embarrassment to me.
Holy bright colors batman!
Whew!!!! I feel like I've reached the finish line after a decathalon!
I can't believe I've missed this thread for the past 3 months or so. It took my about 3 hours to get through it.
I've been laughing like a hyena on crack. Superhero Chewie with the Jimmy Choo Booties sent me over the edge - thanks Newtodecorating - just classic!
The ladybug, Booties, Extreme Makeover Barbie and the Crosseyes Bees made me laugh the hardest. I may even piddled a bit.
I can't bring myself to photograph the bad ones. I have a couple I can think of now and I may have the pics..I'll check. One was my first attempt at a doll cake using a large measuring cup for the skirt. Lordy. Everything's awful about it - from the design to the fact that there must be a petticoat under it.
The other was my attempt at making a bassinet cake for a baby shower - before I knew much about consturction or anything. Case of "eyes too big for my talent" at the time. LOL The thing fell over, the basketweave was shoddy....ugh
OK I found the alleged doll. Holy Hoop Skirt.
