I did this cake and thought i did a good job. LOL it is so horrible looking at it now. It was a cake I did after my 1st class just to practice. I can't believe i have it in my photos but we all started somewhere so here it is. I think i definately win. I havent read all the posts but from what i've seen this one is the worst.
Not a good experience! My fiance had just decided that he would like to learn to "help" me dec cakes. We get up late, and I am supposed to bring a cake to a cookout. He offers to bake it. Great!
I go into the kitchen, and he decided to make a tier cake! We had, seriously, an hour to be at the cookout. I get some other things ready while he mixes the frosting recipe. "Too thick." "Then add a bit of water. - WAIT! A BIT not a 1/4 CUP!!!" ![]()

Frosting is the consistency of pudding. He insists that he "can at least frost the cake - it can't be that hard." Trying to save some dignity, I grab the pudding-frosting that is left and slap together some roses, pop then in the freezer, and throw them on the top.
If we could have just tossed it, I would have been thrilled! NOOOO - this was for public eyes! I could have died - or killed him - but he was gentleman enough to take all the blame before I was all the way out of the car. ![]()
THis one was a disaster from start to finish. Supposed to be a sort of Dora princess using the doll pick. Tried to make it with my grandma watching and telling what to do, messing with the icing. The mmf wouldn't cooperate, didn't get to make her princess hat, couldn't get the bodice part right, was running horribly late for the family party. Then my dh's grandma stuck her hand in the "happy" part trying to "get something off the cake" What would posess her to touch the cake I'l never know. then the birthday girl said "that's not what I wanted" She's lucky she's cute or I would have killed her!
I don't see anything wrong with that doll cake? If that's your disaster I'd like to see your masterpieces ![]()
Here's the cake that set me on the whole fondant GOOD buttercream BAD road. I was making two cakes that day, just for practice, luckily, and I was planning to take them to church the next morning and let the congregation eat them. The first cake turned out so beautifully and I was in love with it (the brown and white stacked fondant with the bow in my photos). The other cake was from a Wilton book. I first of all had problems with the middle tier (a scratch chocolate cake) because it was so tender it was falling apart and I couldn't get the layers even. There were crumbs EVERYWHERE. It was getting very late, my strings were breaking all over the place, and I was pretty much tired of cakes and everything to do with cakes, so I just did the bare minimum of decorations on the second and third tier to make it kind of match the bottom tier.
The top tier was the only one I was able to get the icing smooth on, and when I reached for it to set it on top, I put my hand in it.
See that ominous bulge in the bottom tier? That's the cake beginning to collapse, although I didn't know it at the time I took the picture. Yes, 6 hours later it was the Leaning Tower of Disaster Cake. I thought I put plenty of dowels in the bottom, and I STILL have no idea why it collapsed, but I sure do use more dowels now.
I took both cakes to church and set the brown & white fondant one out for display and tried to hide the white one in the corner of the kitchen, but people kept coming and LOOKING at it. And trying to say nice things. I was so embarrassed. I cut it up as soon as I could....the good news is that the chocolate cake was delicious. Ah well, every cake is a lesson.
You are very kind Kelly! I just had this vision in my mind what I wanted it to look like. The bottom decorating went great (unitl the grandma-hand incident lol) It was my first doll cake but not the last the b-day girl's big sis wants a barbie fairy doll cake for her b-day! Yeah me!
The before pics of your stacked cake are great but it does sound like the cake betrayed you!
Holy crap! I have been sitting here for over 2 HOURS! I was going to go to bed a long time ago, but I stumbled upon this thread and well...I couldn't stop!
I vote for the booties on cocaine. The photo of Chewy wearing the booties made me laugh so hard, my chest hurt from all that heaving! LOL I can't wait to show my DH - he'll just die!
You know, I keep thinking of MORE and MORE bad cakes....several I actually have in my real portfolio (WHY?)....there was the Wilton clown cake. The colors make my eyes hurt. What's with the purple swag/ribbon?
The halloween one is okay, I guess...if you like rivers of lime jello and black cauldrons and some dripping black color down the side. The troll is a toy.
Let's see, there was the cake covered in blueberry jam (iced in purple) and then topped with some sort of rose with Happy Birthday Grandma written on it...thankfully, it was just a practice cake, but it was really goopy down the sides...(no pic online)
My worst would either have to be the cake I did for my grandma gosh...about 11 years ago (I've only really been doing cakes for 4) that was a sheet cake, baked in a pyrex pan (I took it out) but iced with a can of frosting. I wrote Happy 66th on it (she wanted to kill me LOL) and did these weird red, yellow and green stick cheerleaders on the corners! If I ever find a photo, I'll post it; but I haven't seen that photo in years!
Or....the cherry-filled cake I did for my ex when I first started dating. Likewise, no photo. (I never took one.) I was just starting my Wilton Course 3 and wanted to practice stringwork. It was soooo lopsided! I swear, I had some dangling ovals on the side of this cake! And no one had told me I needed a little icing in between the layers before adding the cherry filling - all the goop soaked into the cake and well, bleh! Not to mention the side bulges!
YOu guys are cracking me up!!!! I was reading through & scrolled down to that troll doll!!That is hilarious!!!!! Candy, where did you get that thing???
And Fostercreations...um...well....hmmmm.....I"m not quite sure what to say on your cakes... ![]()

LMAO. Still loving this thread.
Fosters, Well what can I say, you captured my likeness very well, there's just one thing, I wouldn't be able to find a bikini in my size to save my life! LOL. FOr the lady, I think you did good till you got to the lips. Its kinda like the overly made up barbie...a bit too much lip. LOL
I found that nasty troll at Wal-mart what.....4 years ago? I LOVE this thread! We should totally keep it alive!
Ugh. I hate taking photos of ugly cakes - I don't want the reminder! I remember last year, a customer (I work in a supermarket bakery) brought in the Wilton cross cake and he wanted ME to do it exactly like the photo! Now, I hadn't done stringwork in ages.....and he wanted the gold....and all that crap. I thought it was absolutely hideous! No photo though. Haha!
There was also someone who wanted a "baby in a devil suit" ~ apparently it was a Precious Moments thing ~ they ended up with something that looked like a pig! Again, no photo. But hey, if I make another hideous cake, I'll be sure to take a photo and post it here!
Ok I cannot and will not claim this as mine.....but this will give you an idea why I have gotten into cake decorating. We travelled 5 hrs with my kids (DS turning 2 that weekend & DD 11mths) to celebrate Easter & son's 2nd B-day. Ordered a cake over then phone 3 days in advance. It had to be ELMO...son loves Elmo. Long story short thought I was gonna have this adorable cake to serve to my 21 guests and this is what I paid almost $30 for. (Oh and back side of cake is only half iced like I wouldn notice. Elmo had fallen over 3 times before we got the cake home)
Also had a second party for son the weekend after at our home ordered a cake from Safeway & I too was to be Elmo...I said I have the decorations drew it out how I wanted it decorated....well the cake I do beleive ended up in the garbage at Safeway never took it....The Bakery staff lady was pissed at me cause they screwed up the cake from my drawing and explanition to the decorator. (Sorry no Pic of that one)

Okay, I just want to say first that in NO WAY am I trying to take the store's side on either cake. Unfortunately, supermarket decorators just don't have the time to make everything perfect. Some of those deco sets are cute, but most of the characters are too damn tall and skinny to stay upright. They simply fall over...I've had to squish them down into the icing to get them to stay up or to get the cover on the cakes all the time.
You see, I work for a supermarket bakery. And all the time, they push me to work faster, do more cakes etc. I can crank out a regular cake in no time - (I even did a single layer cake in 1 min - from base icing to trim and ribbons and confetti...all the bags were ready so it was easy. And that's without the giant icing tip!) special orders take me considerably longer. Don't get me wrong, I try to make the special orders as perfect as I can but sometimes it just doesn't happen. However, at home, it's not uncommon for me to spend several hours on a simple birthday cake! Everything has to be just right!
I've had people draw pictures before and I try to do the best I can - I HATE crumbs in my icing and bald spots! But, I just don't have time to crumb coat at work. Especially because I'm the only decorator that works weekends. I do have a part-time girl, but she doesn't seem to notice the bald spots or crumbs in her icing (hence, I do all the orders!)...I've tried and tried, but she still half-ices sometimes).
I'm really not trying to take the store's side here. I know it sucks, but there's really nothing to do about it aside from do it yourself or have someone else do it!
After all, that is why I do cakes at home too.
The border on that cake is wayyyy too big. I can see how they just totally rushed through it. They should have patched the back as to where it would be totally iced. Even when I do orders I make them look the best I can with the time I am allotted. I end up calling a LOT of customers to make sure that the cake will be just right. A lot of the other bakery people do not take explicit instructions, so I'd rather have a chat so that I make something that they will like. I am sorry you had such a crappy experience but hey, this means that you will be able to have even CUTER cakes than store stuff! I've always preferred home cakes to store cakes anyway. My DH KNOWS to NEVER buy me a birthday cake...cause I know I can do a LOT better! ![]()
PS - I have told customers that the wedding cakes in the store are crap. LOL They don't even call for dowels and these get into 3 tiers! No cardboard supports between layers either. So yep, they're crap! And I've also taken orders from the store and did them at home instead.
In my photos, I have a few cakes that I did at work that turned out very cute and the customer absolutely loved.
Hey guys...I love this thread & would love for it to stay lighthearted & fun ....that being said could I ask for everyone to post their own cakes & not cakes that were made by other people? I would hate for anyone to get their feelings hurt.
dyenana: Please don't think I'm directing this totally toward you... I just didn't want to see anyone get upset ![]()
candy177: you have some beautiful cakes in your gallery & I can't even imagine trying to produce as many cakes a day as you must have to do at work!!! It takes me all day & then some to make one!! ![]()

Oh not saying anything or have hurt feelings...but here is what they did was had a regular store staff - not bakery staff decorate my cake. Thats all I wanted to say. If I wanted a cake like that I would have had fun and had my kids have fun and do it themselves.
I just wanted to say I am sooooo glad I am doing this and I have had a few like this but when it comes to paying that amount wow....I know none of you would charge a customer for a cake like this one.
We have another local bakery in our neighbourhood....I can't say enough about them they ROCK....They have decorated the replacement for the Safeway cake while DH waited. I have been back since for suppies and stuff from them.
I never even THOUGHT to post this cake till I was thinking of the thread tonight and looked up just in time to see the pic flash over my screen. This was my first cupcake cake. Someone on here did a GREAT Cookie Monster cupcake cake and I couldn't find the picture once I was ready to make it. I decided to wing it. BIG mistake.
Let the laughter commence.
mushbug...you are so funny....
He isnt bad...I am though a little concerned he is on top of your dryer...and that he is sliding off the cake board!!! ![]()

tripletmom: ok, don't be offended, cuz the cakes really not bad, but the first thing that came to my mind (not sure what this says about me) is one of those blow up dolls. It was the lips I think. I laughed out loud and yes moderators, I'm trying to keep this clean.
WOW! Smoochiefrogs castle really defies the laws of gravity! I bet you couldn't do that again w/o it collapsing! ha ha!!!!!! ![]()
This is the first time viewing this thread and I am having a hard time reading it through the tears in my eyes. My contacts are about to float away! It's late and I keep telling myself "just one more picture..." Thanks everyone for sharing these. I know where to come when I want a good laugh... now, I'm off to find that "freakishly, large baby"
