Guy Fawkes Mask
So, this was a birthday cake for a friend of mine that I finished earlier today. He loves the "V for Vendetta" movie and his wife had the wonderful idea for me to try making the Guy Fawkes mask into his birthday cake. So, I made a mold from the mask that he has and baked it. Used some pre-made fondant for the first time. First time really working with fondant in fact. Love it! Don't know how I've gotten along without it! It's red velvet with fondant. I painted on the colors and I'm quite happy with how it came out. Obviously there is room to improve, however. So, suggestions are always welcome!

Happy 50Th!
This was a birthday cake for my boss. She turned 50 this year and hated it. Lol. But her family and friends threw a party anyway. When she found out she was having a party she decided she wanted a chocolate and peanut-butter cake. Never made one before, so I went searching. I ended up doing a rick chocolate cake with peanut-butter butter-cream frosting. It was yummy! Then I went a little nuts on the chocolate drizzle. Mmmmmmm.... chocolate....

Sweetheart Cakes
Cakes for a "Sweetheart Powwow" being put on by my work and other tribal businesses that we are associated with. Specifically, they're for a cake walk. Most people are just baking the cakes, leaving them in those disposable tins, and tossing on frosting. I just can't bring myself to do that anymore!!! Oh, how much easier the last two evening would have been if I could. Lol. Oh! And the darker colored one is actually a shade of purple. I just don't have a good camera that would show that.

Elmo
So, I tried my hand at a little bit of carving here. I don't have the cake mold that a lot of people seem to have. A co-worker asked me if I could make an Elmo cake for her son's 2nd birthday, so I did. It didn't quite turn out how I envisioned it, but it works I think. Besides, while it's for his birthday, it's also practice. When she requested the cake, I told her I was still new to all this and had never tried something like this as of yet. She said "practice with mine!" So, that's what I did. :D Let me know what you think? Thanks

A Toast To 2010
Happy New Year!!! So, I'm quite happy with how these turned out... aside from the fact that I realized too late that I had made yellow champagne bottles on a gold cake board. Oh well! The bottles are the cakes, made with aluminum foil molds that I made with empty sparkling cider bottles. The mold for the bottle on the left did stretch a little bit while baking but the other held the shape quite well. The corks are marzipan and obviously the rest is just piped icing on the cake board. Please let me know what you think and any suggestions for improvement are welcome!

Another Present Cake
So, here's my last present cake for the year. This one ended up being a pain in the rear. First off, it cracked. Not a huge deal, able to hide with frosting, but still annoying. So, I got it all decorated, no problem. The icing wasn't smoothing out like I wanted but oh well. On Wednesday, I go to deliver it to the lady that asked me to make it and she FORGOT that she was supposed to meet me and was already out of town until the next morning. Ugh! So, I go to drive out of the parking lot and the sun is right in my eyes. Don't even see the car that's coming. I finally see it and slam on the breaks. Avoid a crash but the cake and its board go wooosh, sliding right onto the floor. Luckily it didn't flip over and didn't slide off the board completely. It did slide forward a bit though and pushed in one side of the cake. I was literally in tears. Probably more because of the close-call-almost-crash, but whatever. So, I went home and just stuck the thing in the fridge for a few hours so I could calm down and not want to completely destroy the thing. I took it out, cut off the crushed parts and redid the entire side. Then, painstakingly, my boyfriend helped me move it to a newly covered cake board and I had to re-frost parts of it that cracked from the move. All in all, fixing it probably took about 2.5 - 3 hours. Pain. In. The. Butt. If only she had met me when she said she would! I am never going to make a cake for someone else for Christmas Eve ever again.

Pile O' Presents
So, here's the cake that I was practicing for. A pile of presents! Well, actually, this is kind of a practice cake too. See, this is for my work Christmas party which was this evening. I decided to use the occasion to practice this kind of cake because I've been asked to make this cake for a woman I know for Christmas day. This one turned out great, I think. At least, it's my best to date. Everyone loved it too. They said it looked wonderful and tasted great. It's a white cake with strawberry-cream filling in the big 'present'. Normal buttercream frosting for the 'wrapping paper' and rolled buttercream fondant for the ribbons and bows. Almost all of it was eaten or stolen away! Lol. Please, please, feel free to leave comments. Thanks for looking!

Practice Present Cake
So, here's a present cake. It's white with a dulce de leche filling and rolled buttercream. Let me tell you, I'm never going to use that filling again if I can help it. My boyfriend requested it but it's a pain in the butt, always seeping out even though I put a double layer of stiff buttercream frosting around the edge to dam the stuff in. The rolled buttercream didn't turn out quite like I had hoped. It was quite shiny. Is that normal? I see so many cakes on here that look better. I know I'm still very new, but I want to learn so badly! Please, suggestions are desperately wanted.

Martita's
My boyfriend's mom's best-friend just opened a restaurant called Martita's. So, I decided to make her a congrats cake. I also figured I'd try some new stuff with it. So... 1st, I made it red velvet which I've never made. 2nd, poured fondant. 3rd, since the fondant didn't cover the sides well, I tried a basket weave with buttercream frosting. That turned out okay. 4th, I made the big roses from marzipan. I've never done any of this before. So, comments and suggestions are very very welcome! Thanks for looking!

Thanksgiving Cake
So, I had a party to go to for work today. Annual Thanksgiving Day Party. I was nominated as dessert girl. Woohoo. Lol... eh, it wasn't all that bad. Just tiring. Anyway, one of the girls is pregnant and apparently her craving is chocolate cake. So, I promised her chocolate cake. This was the end result. Chocolate cake with buttercream frosting. Polite comments and critiques are welcome and even encouraged!

Practice Cake
Here's my second cake. It got a bit busy on the top because I was practicing with a few different tips. Lol. Oh well. Like the title says, it's just a practice cake. Not for anything special. I used a mayonnaise chocolate cake recipe that I found somewhere on here. I can't remember where though! Whoever it is that posted it, thank you! The icing is a simple buttercream. The first time I used it was for the decorating on my Halloween cake. As soon as I spread it out to hold the fondant in place, I regretted that I had even made a fondant. Buttercream spreads so smoothly that I wished I had just used that! Lol. I did only use the buttercream on this one though and I like how it turned out... except for the busy-ness part. :D

My First Cake
Well, the title isn't entirely accurate, but pretty much. I've baked other cakes from boxes and such and I've done one other before this but that turned out totally wrong. So... I consider this my first cake. I tried a fondant but it cracked when I unrolled it onto the cake and even tore. What did I do wrong? Is it too dry, too moist? Any ideas? Suggestions/comments are welcome. I know I have a long way to go but I want to learn!
