Over cooking it will dry it out every time. icon_sad.gif

Hope you find some new ones that come out good and yes do share them.

I went to the store last night and stocked back up on fruits and veggies, plus frozen meals. For dinner I had talipia, steamed green beans, steamed brocolli and cucumber salad. Mmmmm! I really like fresh veggies and I did not add anything to them last night. Aren't you proud of me?

Nothing on the fresh broccoli? Yep, I am proud of you. I haven't made it there yet. I need some cheese sauce or something on it. The cheese sauce that I use is theTostitos Con Queso. It's pretty low in cals and fat. I only use like 2 Tblsp and that gives it just enough flavor to enjoy it. I so wish I enjoyed veggies in the raw........

Well these were steamed, so not raw for me either. I like tender veggies not tough or crunchy ones (except cucumbers).

Some days I'll put a dab of butter on the broccoli or salt or garlic salt. And of course cheese is yummy on them. At my mom's I use one of those butter sprinkles but I keep forgetting to buy some for my house.

I really like roasted green beans and want to try doing the same with other veggies. Maybe that is what I will have tonight. Mmmm.

Margie, I often use skinned chicken breast with the bone and then cut it off, I find that you get more meat per breast, and it stays moist! Plus they tend to be cheaper than the boneless skinless! icon_smile.gif I agree with Tracy that people tend to overcook "just to be safe!"

Tracy, CONGRATS on the pound! icon_smile.gif You are doing awesome!! And sounds like you are eating really well, I am not a huge salad dressing person but am super proud of you for eating them plain!!

I should try roasted green beans, asparagus might be good too! I love my raw veggies, and my 6 year old only eats them raw. My 3 year old only eats them cooked, so I always have to have both. lol!

I had a very weak night last night, one of my husbands Aunts is in the hospital dying of cancer and while her sister was visiting with her she had a heart attack, so he has 2 Aunts in the hospital (they both had a large part in raising him. icon_sad.gif ) I managed to get a sitter for a few hours so we went out for Chinese buffet (EVIL!) then visited with them at the hospital. It is sooooo hard seeing his Aunt with cancer so weak, and she is a single Mom of a 21 year old son who is completely irresponsible, and completely in denial that she is going to die, so it is going to be hard on everybody when she is gone. So sad. icon_sad.gif

I am doing a toning class over lunch today and have my run clinic tonight. It is pouring rain outside, I would prefer to run in snow than cold rain but am telling myself I can't miss it....

Katherine, I am so, so sorry to hear about your hubby's Aunt's. What a sad situation. I can only imagine how difficult this is for everyone. It is such a shame that the 21 year old son is in such denial of what is actually happening but I can understand. That's his mom, nothing can happen to her. I was still that way 3 years ago when my mom passed away. You'd think that at my age, I would have come to the realization that these things do happen. Even to the one person that seems to be the strongest person in the world. It's really hard facing the reality of it all. You are all in my thoughts.....
As for the Chinese meal that you had, please don't worry about it. It may have been more sodium than you would really want but in another day, you'll never know that you had it. I can't imagine life without Chinese food every now and then. icon_lol.gif Oh and pizza too. icon_lol.gif
Thanks for sharing with me how you purchase your chicken. I think I will do just that when I go to the store. Matter of fact, I think I'll go today. I don't know if you guys have a Farm Fresh in your area but they have Perdue chicken on sale. The ad says "buy one and get two free" Now that sounds almost too good. So, gonna check that out for sure.
Have a great day everyone.........

Katherine, I'm so sorry about your Hisband's Aunts! Y'all are in my thoughts!!

Don't worry about that buffet, we are allowed to spurge and go out to dinner. It wasn't one dinner out that got us in the position we are in. If it makes you feel any better I had a BBQ sandwich yesterday. One should look up calories before they eat it not afterward. :-/

For the green beans, I drizzle a little olive oil on them then salt and stick into the oven until they are soft and yummy!! icon_smile.gif Oh and I still have salad dressing on my salad, just nothing on the other veggies. I am trying to cut back on the dressing as much as I can but I still need a little.

My great uncle passed away yesterday evening. He is the one that has been battling with Cancer. I am sad for him, but he is no longer in pain and he knew exactly where he was going. He was a man that was not afriad of death and was comforting everyone that had been in to see him. He was in his 80's and him and my great aunt celebrated their 62nd wedding annivesary last Wednesday. They didn't have any kids, so my Aunt feels like she is completely alone now. It will be very hard for her to get though this.

Aunt Flo decided to hit this morning and apparently she isn't in a good mood, so I'm dealing with cramps and feeling all over crappy. Hopefully they let up by this afternoon since I have class tonight. It is going to be a long day!

Oh Tracy, I am so very sorry about your great uncle. He sounds like he was a wonderful, caring person and I'm sure he will be missed by all who knew him. As for your great Aunt, I can only imagine how difficult this is for her. Bless her heart. My heart goes out to everyone. I will say a prayer for her.
I'm sorry that you're not feeling quite up to par this morning. Hopefully by this evening, things will be better. As for the barbq, what brand do you buy? I get the Brookwood brand from Walmart. There are 250 calories in a 5 oz. portion, which is really a good amount. I absolutely love that barbq.

Margie, he was a wonderful man who did touch meany lives. He was one of the few people I know that was very religious (he was a preacher) but did not push is beliefs on you. You never heard him say an unkind word about anyone and he was always doing for others, even if that meant giving up something he needed as well. He was truly a godly person.

He was on chemo for months, not to cure him because the cancer had spread way to much by that point, it was in his bones, but to help manage the pain. Even when the chemo made him sicker than a dog, when you would ask him how he was doing, he would tell you he was doing pretty good. I saw him Sunday and I had asked him how he was feeling (by this point he was in hospice care and we knew it was only a matter of days. He told me he felt just fine and went on to ask how I was doing.

One day my mom was staying there up there to help my aunt and she had a headache. He asked my mother if she was feeling okay. She told him about the headache, and here he was dying with cancer and suffering through all the pain, told her that he was sorry her head was hurting and hoped she was feeling better soon. That's the kind of person he was.

His funeral will be tough to get through though. Rumor has it he taped himself singing a song that he will have played at it. He also worked with the preacher on what he wanted. My mother did tell her aunt that she hoped there was nothing in it about celebrating his death. When my mother's mom died several years ago (after many months of struggling to live) her preacher told us we should celebrate that she was in heaven. We didn't want her in heaven yet, we wanted here here with us.

I know my great uncle wasn't scared of death and found comfort in knowing where he was going to after death, but we are not ready to celebrate that.

My bbq yesterday was fast food BBQ from Rudy's. I didn't have them put the sauce on it but did add some myself. If figured I'd have less sauce that way. My brothers both had dessert with theirs so I could have done alot worse. Instead of dessert I had a salad so I got some veggies in.

I made up for the higher calorie lunch but having less at dinner. I still ended my day around 1350 (give or take) calories and did 19 mins or 1.5 miles on Hank. He said I burned 124 calories doing that.

So over all I ended the day with a good number. And in the end it isn't one day that will make or break my weight loss. Instead it is how it all averages out.

Your great uncle was a true gem, Tracy. Each of you were truly blessed to have him in your lives and you will always take a part of him with you. God rest his sole............ His funeral will without a doubt be difficult. I couldn't imagine watching a video of him singing. It just brings tears to my eyes thinking about it. Just try to remember that he wouldn't want any of you to mourn, at least not for very long but would want you to live each day of your lives to it's fullest and be happy. It's a hard time and I'm so sorry for your loss. My heart goes out to you, your great aunt and to all who had the privilege of being a part of his life.

Thank you all for the kind words for our extended family.

Tracy, I am so sorry about your Great Uncle. Many hugs and sympathies to you and your family. icon_sad.gif It sounds like he was an amazing man!! icon_sad.gif Your Aunt is in my thoughts as she tries to move on without him.

I don't think anybody can "celebrate death" and be happy that somebody is now in heaven. In time you will heal, at your own pace, and you will always have fond and happy memories of him. Everybody has their own pace and own way of coping with loss, and some people never get over losing a loved one...

I had a good day yesterday, I am just feeling blue these days. icon_sad.gif I don't think it's normal to feel lonely in a marriage, but it just seems that my husband prefers to pass his time away on the computer than spend time with me, he doesn't go to bed until after 1am, I am gone by the time he gets up in the morning, we both work all day, and I'm so stressed out and just need him right now. icon_sad.gif I have tried talking about it (I am sooo not a good talker about feelings) but he gets all pissy and I end up feeling badly. *sigh* I hope this is only a temporary rift.... It helps to type it out, but really what is that going to do for the situation? When we go home this evening he will still spend the night on the computer and I will still be lonely.

Thank you Katherine!

Have you tried putting what you are feeling down on paper and giving that to him? I think sometimes when we try to talk about how we are feeling the other person often goes into the defensive mode and it never ends well. With words you get to say everything you need to, and don't have to be interupted with them trying to say anything back before you get it all out. Keep trying to talk to him and hopefully he will stop and actually listen!

You are right you shouldn't feel lonely in a marriage and he needs to know that is how you feel. Keep trying to talk to him and hopefully he will stop and actually listen!

Sending big HUGS your way!

Katherine, I'm so sorry that you are feeling down and out. Tracy may have a good suggestion. If hubby doesn't really want to sit and talk, a letter may be the next best thing. I so hope that things get better in that department. It's not fun feeling lonely, by no means.

I am now 100% vegan for 5 weeks. I love this diet. My kids eat chicken but I feel so much better staying away from junk food.

Started my spinning class at the local Y. My instructor is a retired 74 year old former cop. He recently was certified to teach spin and now working on his pilates certification.

He is an inspiration.

I attended a coworkers birthday party. She requested healthy foods to bring. For her birthday we had a fruit salad arranged on a cake plate and one cupcake to hold the candles.

My coworker joined me at weight watchers. She weighed over 200 pounds and in three years met her goal at 140.

I weight 215 and lost the weight in 2 years. From 215 to 110 pounds. Don't deny your favorite foods but remember portion control.

I decided to go vegan- non dairy, non meat, and no sugar or flour. It has helped me alot in losing weight.

The secret is to remember what you put in your lips go on your hips.

That phrased helped me to think twice before I stuffed my face with junk food.

Keeping a food diary or journal helps. Write down everythin you eat, also what triggers you to eat.

I started quilting as a substitute for late night cravings.

Moving is important. I walk everywhere in Greenwich Village. Never owed a car or driver's license.

We also do not have television in the house. With the switch to digital, we tried living without a television and love it. I lost weight just by not having a TV in the house.

So hang on everyone. Lose the weight slowly.

Wow, I have been gone a very long time! The last time I posted anything was back in August. I've missed chatting with you all.

I'll try to be brief and catch up. I lost my precious sister on Sept. 23. She had been fighting cancer for almost five years. But her death was very sudden. I talked with her on a Saturday evening and ob Sunday morning she was very confused and not sure who people were. They had to keep her very sedated or she was very agitated. When I talked to her on Saturday I never dreamed that it would be the last time she would talk to me. I know where she is and I will see her again one day. I know that she wouldn't come back here for anything and I don't blame her! But I miss my sister. So my sympathies and prayers to all of you that have lost family or are watching cancer take someone away.

I stopped trying to diet or exercise after losing Bren. But I'm back now. I read a book that totally changed my mindset. It was 'What Would Jesus Eat'. When I read about what all the junk I was eating was doing to my body I was done with all the processed food. So I've become a vegetarin, I'm trying to stay away from junk and I have very little animal by products. I also joined a group on the Discovery Inspire site - it's a 1000 mile challenge. We commited to run, walk or bike 1000 miles in 2010. Having that commitment keeps me moving ever day. So far I have logged in almost 160 miles! I am pretty proud of that. The weight is coming off - slowly. But I am losing inches. I wish I had measured at the first of the year, the only measurments I have are from last July. But that's ok. I am sticking with the exercise. I've never done that, I've never kept exercising even when the weight is not coming off. So maybe I have finally turned that corner where I am going to do this.

Anyway, it's good to be back. Congrats to all of your great work. Looks like y'all are posting some great numbers.

Well hello Melissa. I have often wondered how you were doing. We've missed you on here! It's wonderful to have you back with us. I am so sorry though about your sister. It must have been such a horrible time for you and your family. Dealing with the loss of a loved one is so difficult and devastating. I am glad that you are back with us!!
We've all had our ups and downs on here since you posted in August. But fortunately we are all back on the right track and I think we are all doing really, really well!!! This year is our year and we're gonna make it happen!!! That book sounds really interesting. It certainly seemed to have an impact on you. The committment that you made for the 1000 mile challenge is a great idea. You've already logged in 160 miles? WOW!!!! You really are doing awesome!!! Yes, 2010 is going to be a GREAT year for all of us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Coffeecakes. It sounds like your coworker is totally focused on what it takes to keep the weight off. Wow, that is awesome that she requested healthy food at the birthday party. Very impressives. As is the amount of weight you both lost and have kept off. That is absolutely wonderful...... Congratulations and thanks so much for sharing with us how you did it and what you are now doing. Your spinning class instructor sounds awesome..... What a role model he is!!!!!!!
Take care everyone and enjoy your Sunday.................

Katherine, week-ends are difficult without a doubt. I intentionally made my W.W. weigh in day as Monday in hopes that it would deter me from over eating on the week-ends. I've managed to stay within my alloted points but it's a bit of a struggle. Tonight I've actually got about 9 points left that I haven't used today. I'm starting to get a bit hungry now so I think I'll go have a bowl of oatmeal and some hot chocolate. (diet hot chocolate with hot water) I just wasn't very hungry for some reason at dinner and only had a salad. Hopefully, my weigh in tomorrow will be a good one. I hope that your weigh in surprises you and you will be down. Sometimes the scales surprise us................

Welcome back Melissa. And thanks again CoffeeCake for sharing what works for you.

Weekends are just hard aren't that. I started yesterday early because of the funeral, but I did have my oatmeal before going. Last night I ended up taking my nephew out to dinner, to spend some time with him, and of course I didn't do the best eating. But I enjoyed my time with him. I slept in this morning so my erating is off again. Just another weekend huh?

My weight is up a little this weekend but I haven't been drinking alot of water and I'm hoping Aunt Flo is playing tricks on my body. We will see what the scale says Wednesday and then go on from there.

Hope everyone has a good evening and I will talk to ya'll in the morning!

Hello girls;

My names is Emily, I'm from australia. Im also studying to be a personal trainer at the moment. =) Im a bout 3 quarters of the way through my course at the moment.. would probably be finished by now if i could drag myself away from CC! LOL icon_wink.gif But anyway; I just wanted to say that if any of you would like advice or support or anything like that, please dont hesitate to ask!

to give you a little bit of background on myself, I will say that I have been overweight pretty much my whole life. Food ios my drug of choice!!!haha.

But the fact is, with the right information and support you can do it! Im now a healthy weight, im not a "size 0".. and personally would never want to be.. if you can see bones.. you aint healthy! ha. That being said, I probably could still loose some kilos, but the fact is im healthy, so i dont obsess about it.

I think that was the key, changing your mindset; if your constantly obsessing over being "skinny" or "fitting into the perfect dress" you make things harder. I prefer to take the approach of wanting to get "healthy". or wanting to get fit.

Ive also seen a few posts referring to the BMI.. PLEASE PLEASE disregard this!!! A BMI does not take into consideration a persons muscle mass, bone density or structure. IE- SCALES LIE!!!! BURN THEM!!! lol. For a more acurate measurement of FAT LOSS (because thats ultimatley what we want right? FAT loss.. not muscle or water loss... ) It is best to take girth measurements.. so.. grab yourself a tape measure and measure around your thighs, tummy, arms, chest.. etc. and keep an eye on those measurements instead of the scales. thumbs_up.gif

Just to reinforce my point that SCALES LIE i would like to explain a little more, as you may be aware, muscle weighs more than fat, however, muscle takes up less room than fat. So If we took two people who lost the same amount of fat, but put on more muscle than they did fat, and one of those people was relying on scales, whereas the other was using girth measurments.. what do you think would happen? scales girl would mst likely be incredibly disheartened after seeing that she had put ON weight.. in her mind.. shes put on fat, but we know shes put on muscle instead. Meanwhile, girth girl is celebrating her fat loss!! wooo! yay girth girl!

So some of you may also be thinking.. "i dont want to put on muscle.. that going to make me look like some supersonic freak"
Nope. thats a lie.

As females, we do not have enough testosterone in our bodies to "bulk up" beyond a certain point.. (which is predetermined by our genetics..) unless of course you are taking supplements or something..

And muscle is good. muscle is ;lovely. The more muscle you have, the more calories you burn.. even while your sleeping.. or cake decorating! it also helps speed up your metabolism!

so to build muscle, its best to try and do some sort of weight bearing or "resistance" training 3 times per week.. along with cardio of 4-6 times per week.

ohk, well i think ive covered most things? haha, well let me know if you have anymore questions. icon_razz.gif
and sorry if what ive said has already been said, i read through most of the posts.. but wow.. so many posts...

goodluck!

remember..

dream.
believe.
achieve.
succeed.

Noahsmummy, thank you for your information.

I will say, since I am one that talks about BMI, is that I do realise that things factor into this, and that is why there is a range there. I'd rather aim to be in the normal BMI range, which is why my first goal weight is 127, rather than go off the charts for my height, because they tell me my weight should be at 90-110. And to me 127 sounds more healthy than the others.

I also think that as long as you have a realistic weight in mind there is nothing wrong with tracking it on the scale. And using things like the BMI chart and height/weight chart is a way for some of us to know what is in our healthy range.

I have been heavy for most of my life, so I don't have any idea of what a healthy weight looks like on my body. I can't reference back to the size I was in high school as the weight I want to be because I now weigh less than I did then. I do need a number to focus on, because it gives me a goal. And yes I know people get a little out there with their goal weights which is why I always try to for the realistic number. I would rather see people use the BMI chart as a guide (not as numbers set in stone) to help set their goal weight, rather than pick unreachable numbers out of the hat.

I've always said I am aiming to be healthy and not just skinny. I do not have any desire at this point to be super thin. I just want to be healthy and feel better.

I think for most of us we use the scale because we need to see changes to know we are headed in the right direction. We know if those numbers on the scale keep going up then we need to adjust what we are doing. And many of us do take our measurements as well as another way to see our weight loss.

I do totally get that muscle weighs more than fat, but many of us are 20, 25, 30 or more pounds overweight. So at this point I don't think any muscle we may be gaining is going to overshadow our fat loss on the scale.

Those of us that have been on this thread the longest have always stressed losing weight in a healthy fashion. I don't think any of us (correct me if I am wrong) promote fad diets. In fact we are often (or atleast I am) vocal about it.

We know that the process is a slow one and is a life changing one. We are not just changing a few things for a short period of time to reach a goal. We know that what we do today to lose weight and next week to lose weight we will have to continue to do for the next year, and in 5 years and so on.

Could be why most of us have been here a couple of years working on our weight loss. icon_smile.gif

Hello everyone! Welcome to a new week and a new month! My computer is acting up - its cutting the right side of the screen off. So I'm missing a couple of words per line in everyone's posts. Forgive me if I misread or ignore something someone says. I am computer illiterate so until someone that can help me comes home, I'll just have to try and figure out what everyone is saying!

My weight was up a 1/2 lb. It made me kinda sad but I'm not devastated. I got a mile in on my exercise machine, then went on a 3 mile walk this morning. That felt really good. I have been getting most of my miles in on the exercise machine or my bike. I thought my body could use a different workout this morning.

Now I'm off to shop for shoes for my oldest son's wedding. He's getting married on February 14th. I'm doing the wedding cake and the groom's cake. I haven't even started anything, I think about it every day! Can you say stressed?!!

I hope that everyone has a great, healthy day!

Thank you for joining us Emily, and thank you for all that information! icon_smile.gif

Most of the people here seem to embrace the live-healthier goal to weight loss (and inch loss too!) A few times there have been posts wondering about appetite suppressants and other fad things, and most of the responses were negative to those...

I weigh myself weekly, but I also measure weekly. It seems that if I don't lose weight, I do lose inches, and vice versa. I am happy with the way things are going for me, and happy to see inch loss (and clothes fitting better) along with weight loss too! icon_smile.gif I am finding it difficult to meet a balance between running 4 times a week and resistance training 3 times a week. Right now I am doing weights about twice a week and that seems to be working okay for now! After my half marathon in May I will likely step back my running to 3 times a week instead of 4....

Okay, babble babble babble... lol! Have a great day everybody! icon_smile.gif

Melissa, hope you have fun shoe shopping. I love shoes, but I have a small foot so shoe shopping is hit or miss for me since stores don't carry alot of shoes in my size.

There are many reasons your weight could be up, stress is one of them. Don't let it get you done. As you said this is a new week!

My weight is also still up today. Over the weekend I find myself not drinking as much as I do during the day, so I think that is playing a factor into it.

I didn't express it earlier, but I am so sorry about the loss of your sister. We are hear any time you just need someone to talk to.

Katherine, I'm doing the weight studd 2 to 3 times a week depending on the week. Though I aim for 7 days a week with Hank, I find it is more like 5-6. Me and Hank didn't play this weekend. Saturday night by the time I got home from dinner and my parent's house I was just plain tired. Yesterday I had a headache most of the evening and that just did not inspire me to get on the ellipitcal.

Tonight I'll do both Hank and the other stuff.

Good morning everyone..... Hope you all had a wonderful week-end. We had about 8 inches of snow and boy is it bright outside. Ok, now I'm ready for spring. icon_lol.gif
Hello there Emily. Thanks so much for sharing with us. It's great to meet you. I wish I had taken measurements when I first started charting my weight loss on Jan 4th. I really need to do that. But it's never too late, I guess because this process will be going on for some time.
It's been 4 weeks now and my weight is starting to flucuate some. I've done really great with my eating each day and exercising the best I can but the last few mornings, my weight has gone up each day. I'm not going to let it bother me though because I know this is just the body's way of doing things. It will all work itself out. I did lose almost 2 more pounds though so that's definitely something to be happy about. Sooo, in 4 weeks, I've lost right at 13 pounds. It's been really great so far and I don't expect that to change any in the future. I'm gonna plow through this and hopefully get my blood sugar and cholesterol levels back to a good place.
Hope everyone has a wonderful and productive day. I'm so proud of each one of us..............

Margie, you have done super awesome these last 4 weeks! I'm so proud of you!

Please keep your snow up there! We had two days this weekend where the temps did not get out of the low 30s. UGH!! And the week before, we had a couple of days in the high 60s. Gotta love Texas weather. My daffodils are starting to come up. I'm hoping that is a good sign. Let's hope that Ground hog has good news for us tomorrow! Bring on spring!!

Melissa, if it hadn't been for a loss the first 4 days of last week, I would have seen a gain as well. As I mentioned in my last post, my weight went up the last 2-3 days for no apparent reason other than that's the way the body deals with all of the changes. But it will all work itself out and next week I'm sure you will see the loss. I am going back to weighing once a week. For some reason, I was curious every day this past week and had to step on that scale icon_lol.gif You're doing great!!!

Okay I'm ready for my day to be over. I did my work this morning so now I'm just sitting around. Sigh. I think about all the things I could be doing at home. Or course when I get home I don't want to do any of them. Go figure right?

Okay I have a question for ya. We know we are suppose to pay attention to the numbers on the back of boxes. So my question is which ones do you watch when the items are simalar?

My example. I bought some instant oatmeal for breakfast. The first time I bought High Fiber, the secont time I bought the Weight Control one. Here are the numbers on the back of the box...

Weight Control
Cal: 160
Total Fat: 3g
Sodium 270mg
Potassium: 150mg
Carbs: 29g
Fiber 6g
Sugar 1 g
Protien 7g

High Fiber
Cal: 160
Total Fat: 2g
Sodium 210mg
Potassium: 115mg
Carbs: 34g
Fiber 10g
Sugar 7 g
Protien 4g

Both have the same number of calories. The High Fiber has less fat, sodium, potassium and protien. But has higher Carbs with the fiber and sugar. They are both cinnamon.

So do you go for the higher fiber that is suppose to keep you feeling fuller longer or the one with less sugar? I make my oatmeal with Milk so I'm picking up protien there.

I don't drink cokes or even diet cokes that often. I use Sweet N Low in my tea. So I'm not picking up alot of sugar in my diet during the day.

I usually add some raisins or chopped apples in it and then will eat another serving or fruit with it. If I could remember to boil some eggs I'd probably have one of those with it instead of the addtional fruit.

Today was the first day I had the Weight Control one. I'm thinking that I wasn't as hungry as early when I was eating the other one last week. I'm going to pay attention tomorrow to see when I get hungry again, to see if today was just a fluke or not.
