Weight Loss Help...with The Chunky Monkeys!
Lounge By TexasSugar Updated 28 Oct 2011 , 1:50pm by TexasSugar
Hey,
TexasSugar - I wondered the same thing about which numbers are more important. I think I tend to pick the higher fiber, but I think it's really a toss up. As with all of this - whatever works for you!
I am exhausted! I got my 10 miles in today. It rained most of the day so I walked 4 1/2 miles and then did the rest on my exercise machine. I like walking, but I can get the miles in so much faster on my bike. But it was good to do something different today.
I'm reading a Biggest Loser book and I read something that I hope really sticks with me - do something everyday that brings you closer to your goal. If I can learn to be more positive, to realize that every time I do one thing that brings me closer to my goal I am succeeding. I can be proud. It doesn't have to be an all or nothing thing. Even if the scale doesn't show me what I want to see or the inches aren't coming off fast enough for me, as long as I have done ONE thing I have taken one step closer to being healthy and fit. I need to learn to stop being ashamed of the mistakes I've made and embrace all the positives about myself. I am moving in the right direction and that is nothing to be ashamed of!
And with that I'm off to bed! I'm going to try to get up really early and get in a bike ride or walk before anyone is up!
Good night all!
Melissa
Mellisa, I think I'm gonna go with the High Fiber one next time I buy it. I had the other one again this morning, and this time read on the packaged. It calls for more milk/water, which is why yesterday mine was all gloopy. I like the taste of the High Fiber one, over the last week and a half I was really enjoying the oatmeal in the morning. The last two mornings it was just blah. I don't want blah breakfast. Not very inspiring.
You are so right when you say this is not an all or nothing thing. This is why I have always taken this journey in baby steps. I so don't beleive in making 20 changes in one day. Because then things begin to get overwhelming and when things get overwhelming we tend to give up, give in or get scared off.
I also agree it is important to remember the small changes we do that add up in the long run. That one positive thing we do a day to aid in our long term goals will add up and before you know it you will do those things with out even thinking about it.
It sounds like you are off to a great start this year. We all are and just look ladies, we have made it through the first month of the year! We can so do this.
So last night I finally played with Hank. I did 2 miles in 24 mins on Level 2. This is the first time I've done two miles. After I caught my breathe I got ready for bed, and was asleep not long after I crawled in bed.
It is good to know that I can do 2 miles on it. I'm moving up.
Wow! Congrats on the 2 miles - that is awesome!
For breakfast I've been having a hot cereal mix from Bob's Red Mill. It's full of really good grains and it has 5 grams of fiber per 1/4 serving, dry. But it has wheat, rye, triticale, oats, oat bran, corn, barley, soybeans, brown rice, millet and flaxseed. All really good stuff. I cook it with water and then add almond milk and some sugar - very yummy stuff. And it keeps me satisfied all morning!
It doesn't look like I'll be able to get outside for a bike ride this morning - it's pouring right now. I got one mile in this morning, only nine more to go! I might have to just go walk the mall. That actually sounds really good right now.
Ok, I'm off to get some school done with the kids. Have a great morning everyone!
Melissa
Hi all...
I started my diet program last Wednesday and so far so good. I would really like to join this group!!! I have no clue what to do though. I can't exercise probably for another week because of an injury to my foot. Do you guys have any tips as far as getting through this without breaking down or biting someones head off because u want the chocolate bar so badly lol?!! TIA
KKC welcome to our little group! My opinion is, if you want a chocolate bar, have one. That doesn't mean go for the huge, giant chocolate bars though.
I use the example of M&M's. If I want them and I ignore them and ignore them and ignore them then I will break down and eat the whole bag in one day. Same thing with anything, potato chips, fries, brownies, or all that other good stuff.
I think when you use moderation rather than elimanting things that you are less likely to over splurge in the long run.
I have bought some small Dove dark chocolates. I don't leave them laying out where I can see them (because then I would eat them all day cause they are there), but I know if I want something chocolatey it is there. I eat one, it is 35 calories and that is it. So if you are a chocolate fan get some minature chocolates and ration them out to yourself.
Other wise you may find yourself sitting there in the dark in a corner with chocolate bar wrappers all around you. Or maybe that is just me.
As far as exercises go, what about things that don't require you to be on your feet alot? There are several arm exercises with weights that you can do sitting down. As wll as laying on your side and doing leg lifts and such? Might be something to think about.
Starting Weight - Jan 6 - 153.6
Week 4 Weight - Feb 3 - 147.8
.2 down since last week
5.8 down in 4 weeks.
20.8 to go, (to first goal anyway)
So I didn't make my 6lbs in the 4 weeks, and I only lost .2lbs for the week. Another .2 was all I needed. That would have also put me at my lowest weight again. UGH UGH UGH! I am bummed about it!
But I'm not going to let it get me down. Or atleast trying not to. I know that next week is a new week and we will see what happens on the scale then.
I did another 2 miles on Hank last night. This time in 22:11, so it was faster than the night before. I also did some 5lb weight stuff and some step ups and such. So that's a plus.
Texas thank you for the inspiration and encouragement. And congratulations on your weight loss. I go to the doctor next week to find out how I did. The good thing is that I've been staying away from Sodas and those sugary juices. I eat 6 small meals a day and drink 8 glasses of water every day. The doctor prescribed me some Ferrous Sulfate and folic acid because of the fact that I'm anemic. He wants me to eat more red meat
I mean wouldn't that defeat the purpose of the diet?? I've had a few people tell me to drink red wine and eat more dark colored green veggies because of the iron deficiency. Hopefully it all helps. ![]()
List to your DR. He knows what he is doing.
As far as eating more red meat, I don't think you have to switch over to just turkey to lose weight. I still eat beef. The key is to go for the lower fat cuts of the beef and keep portion sizes in mind. By eating more I doubt he means eat a 16oz steak every meal. ![]()
After surgery they tell you to make sure you eat red meat because it has protiens and stuff that your body needs to heal.
Raisins are high in iron, but are also high calorie. And I'd look up the veggies that have iron in them, but if your DR says more red meat then I would make sure I am eating some of that too.
Thanks Texas...i'm understanding this more and more daily. With this support group I'm sure it'll be easier for me to get thru the days. The one thing I will say i hate about dieting is drinking all that darn water and going to the bathroom every 5 minutes ![]()
Someone told me (maybe on here) that you don't lose weight from drinking all the water, but from all the squating you do when you go to the bathroom. ![]()
Cutting out cokes and your sugary none juices is a great start. There are alot of empty calories in them. Just remember drinks with calories aren't forbidden, you just want to make sure you are getting something from them. Low sugar real fruit juices and milk are some examples. You get vitamins and nutrients from them.
I drink ice tea during the day, it is cheaper for me than bottled water since I could go a through a case of water in 3-4 days. I bought one of those picthers with the filters in it, but again I drink so much of it that the filters just don't last very long. Those things aren't cheap and I couldn't find it for a while after I got it. I think I can find them at Walgreens so I need to look into it again.
I don't like the word diet. I'm not on a diet, I'm on a life style change. That sounds better to me. Plus I know that what I do to lose weight I will have to continue doing after I have lost it.
I think the best things to lose weight are pretty simple.
1. Cut out unnessarly or empty calories.
- Cokes are a big issue with most over weight people. Drinking at least 3-4 a day was common for me before I started losing weight.
2. Portion sizes.
- Most people just eat way more food than they need to. We have been conditioned with the Super Sizing and huge plates of food at resturants to think more is better. Eating on a small plate is an easy way of eating less but feeling like you aren't.
3. Exchange unhealthy (snack) foods for healthy stuff.
- Switch chips and sweets for veggies, fruits, nuts and other healthier choices. When you are really wanting one of those unhealhty things get some single serving or 100 calorie portions of it.
- We can still have those bad for you foods, as long as you pay attention to #2. Yes you can have a piece of fried chicken now and then, but that means a piece of it, not a whole friend chicken. And there are some pretty easy ways to cut calories in cooking with out scarificing good cooking.
4. Move more.
- Exercise is a big plus. But even doing things around the house like cleaning, working in a flower bed/garden or raking will benefit you. Playing games with the kids or just turning on music and dancing around the room gets you up and moving around which burns calories.
5. Avoid mindless eating.
- Find a hobby or go for a walk when so that when you feel hungry you can do something that will keep your hands and mind busy long enough for you to see if you are really hungry or just bored. You can also drink a glass of water and wait to see if it is just thrist rather than hunger.
As I said in a recent post, I believe in babysteps so I worked on these in sections. I quit drinking cokes, then I added in exercise, then I started paying attention to what I was eating and so on.
I keep thinking about starting a blog, but I can't really say anything that hasn't been said before somewhere else. I can only just say it in a different way.
Hello all!
Welcome KKC, you'll love it here. Everyone is so kind and encouraging and full of information. TexasSugar gave you a ton of great advice. Stay strong, this is a lifelong journey, don't get discouraged. Every positive step is a step in the right direction, and brings you closer to your goal.
TexasSugar - congrats on your loss! That is awesome!
I gained 1 1/2 lbs. today!! ARRGGHHH!!! I know that it's not 'real' weight. But it's so frustrating. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day. I know, I shouldn't weigh every day. But I can't help myself. But I'm not giving up. Because of the 1000 mile challenge I work very hard to get my miles in every day -11 miles for today!! And I'm still eating good foods. I found a great recipe for portobello cheese steak subs. We had it for dinner last night, lunch today and then dinner tonight
! Can you say 'yummy'?! I've also gotten addicted to sauteed baby bok choy. Tomorrow I'm trying quinoa, I'm very excited.
I think I'm going to go try to get a couple of miles in before everyone gets home from church - I hate missing Wednesday night service, but I LOVE the peace and quiet!!
I hope that everyone has a great night!
Melissa
My computer is still messing up, so I can't read everything that y'all write. Forgive me if I misunderstand of repeat something someone else says
Tracy, I'm really not sure about instant oatmeal... I tend to try to avoid a lot of sugar but like the fibre count in the high fibre one... If you are not eating a lot of sugar elsewhere, I would go with the higher fibre!
I think it is beneficial to generally stay away from "instant" anything, but this is not feasible for everyone. Typically I make a big pot of oatmeal (steel cut oats, about as unprocessed as you can get) and then portion it into tupperware bowls or baggies and store in the fridge or freezer! I usually add a couple table spoons of ground flax to it as well, then add cinnamon, bananas, blueberries, apples, or whatever, as I am preparing it to eat! Remember, variety is also the spice of life so you shouldn't have the exact same breakfast every single day!
Reading on I see that Melissa suggest Bobs Red Mill, they have lots of nutritious cereals with lots of grains and no added salt or sugar!! You should definitely check them out!
At our grocery store they are in the organic section.
Congrats Melissa on the 10 miles!! Don't let the gain get you down, you are doing awesome!!
Congrats Tracy on playing with Hank, he must have been starting to get lonely. lol! Congrats on another loss as well!
Welcome KKC! Please jump right in!! I would suggest having a small dark chocolate bar as a reward at the end of every good week you have, or after each happy weigh in/measure! If you fight the craving for too long you are more likely to crash and have a crazy stuff your face session, then feel overwhelmed with guilt! Sound familiar anybody? lol!
I have chronic low iron and nothing I can take helps, we don't eat much red meat (and I have tried but my iron still remains low-ish). Just choose the leaner cuts, and try to avoid too much ground! I have heard that red meat has enzymes in it that are essential to your health, so we do eat it once, maaayyybbe twice a week during bbq season. ![]()
I love this forum so much, unfortunately I have been really busy at work and I have had to cut back on computer time. I could either cut back on computer time, or exercise time, so you should all be proud of me for continuing to exercise and please forgive me for not being around as much....
Jan. 1 weight = 181.8 lbs
Jan. 6 weight = 176.6 lbs (waist=38, pants=32)
Jan. 13 weight = 177.2 lbs (waist=37.5)
Jan. 20 weight = 175.2 lbs
Jan. 27 weight = 171.8 lbs
Feb. 3 weight = 171.6 lbs (waist = 35)
So I am down 0.2 lbs and my waist has shrunk by 3 inches since my re-start of being a healthy person! I am very happy with those numbers after my weekend of over-indulgence! ![]()
Have great rest-of-the-week everybody!!!!!!!
Melissa, if you have to look at the scale every day then don't look at it as gains or loses until that one day that it counts. Instead tell yourself that you are up this or down that. Because there is a big difference in being up a pound one day and having gained a pound in one day.
Chances are you really didn't gain weight. Your body could be retaining fluid from not enough water or having eaten too much salt. If you weigh every day or even at different times during the day you will see how much your weight changes from day to day and morning to night.
I will admit I step on the scale between weigh ins. I wouldn't recommend it for everyone. It all depends on how you deal with the numbers you see each day. If they freak someone out and frustrate them, then they would be better off not weighing every day. For me they are numbers and I try not to let them get me down, except on weigh in day.
I weighed this morning and the scale (maybe I need to name it a mean name too) said 146.8, which is a whole pound less than yesterday and would have meant a actual lose. I'm not sure if my weight was just up yesterday or this mornings number was a fluke. Guess we will see what it says next week.
Melissa, something I'd consider as well, is re-evulating the number of calories you are taking in. If you are walking 11 miles a day, that is alot of exercise. You may actually need to up your calories with that. The more you exercise the more you can eat, because remember your body does need so many calories a day. If you aren't eating alot and exercising that much your body could be 'storing' because it is afraid it isn't going to get enough of what it needs. (Same principal as eating less than 1200 calories.)
http://nutrition.about.com/library/bl_nutrition_guide.htm
http://walking.about.com/cs/calories/l/blcalcalc.htm
On this one I would enter the weight you want to be at. I do this because I am trying to eat the same amount that I would be eating if I was at that weight, that way when I get to the maintaining part I don't have to really change anything.
When I look for calorie needs I always google and look at 2-3 places because they all vary some. ![]()
Your subs sound good, care to share the recipe?
I tried a recipe last night for a broccoli soup that was pretty good. Interesting since you use cannelli (probaby spelling that wrong) beans in it.
Katherine, I miss you! But I'm proud that you are picking your exercise over us. I think we can learn to deal with it.
Breakfast for me has to be something pretty easy to put together and eat. I know instant oatmeal isn't the best, but I figure as long as I avoid the ones that come with fruits in it and are overly sugary it is better than some other options. With the cinnamon I can mix in many different fruits to change up the taste. I've heard the steel cut oats are the best for you but I can't find them.
I'm still not sure how I feel about the weight control oatmeal. I'm thinking maybe if I add some more cinnamin to it it might be better. We'll see. I enjoy breakfast foods but I'm not the best morning person and can't even think about food until I've been up for a little while.
I've tried the oatmeal that comes in the canisters rather than the instant packets, but I just don't like it.
When it warms up I won't want the oatmeal any more, I'll back to colder breakfast foods.
Hope everyone is having a good Thursday!
We'll always be here for ya Katherine! If it wasn't for ya'll support, I wouldn't be where I am at now, seeing new numbers long forgot.
I have a demo at Michaels tomorrow on cookies then my mom is doing a Super Bowl party Sunday. I'm not into football but I'll be there, maybe crocheting. I'll leave some of the cookies at the store Saturday, and then bring the rest home for my nephew to have. Sunday I'm making a dessert of some kind, but I'm thinking maybe a light, low fat lemon pound cake. It's yummy and not as heavy as some pound cakes. I'll also try to pick a healthier appetizer to carry.
I know that I'll splurge a little but that's okay, that's part of life. I'll just have to make up for it before and after Sunday.
I'm in such a better more positive mood today. Let's hope it carries on through out the weekend. HUGS!
Hey everyone.... Wow, what a week. Sorry I haven't been on much but this week just went nuts...... I'll catch up on posts soon. I just wanted to say Welcome to KKC to our group. So nice to have you here and look forward to getting to know you. I too get that chocolate crave every now and then so I do just as TexasSugar suggested. I eat just a small piece and that takes care of my craving. If I didn't I would start to feel deprived and that's NOT a good thing... So, I believe that you have to incorporate some of these things into your diet every now and then. That's real life. Again, this isn't a "diet" it's a lifestyle change. You'll do great....
Tracy, would love to have that pound cake recipe whenever you get a chance. Sounds like you're going to have a few temptations this week-end. I know exactly what that's like. Monday was my birthday and hubby fixed an absolutely wonderful meal for me. I know I ate more than I should, but hey, it was my birthday
We also have our anniversary so once again, dinner will be a bit of a challenge. Then there are birthday celebrations over the week-end and then of course you have the super bowl game. Yep, gonna be a challenge. Just got to remember, moderation.
I may not have a loss come Monday and if not, I'll be ok with that.
OK, break time is over already. Have a wonderful day everyone. Stay strong, think positive and each one of us WILL reach our goals!!!! ![]()
Hello ladies. Sorry I haven't been on much. Life has really been a challenge the last couple weeks. My grandson was back in the hospital again and this time the CDC got involved. He was diagnosed with Pseudomonas bacteria in his blood stream. (Very dangerous)
I went to the Dr for my regular 3 month blood work for diabetis and he found I have hypothyroid. Now I'm on meds to help control that too. At least we have an explanation as to why I haven't been real successful in loosing much weight.
I would love to have that pound cake recipe too, Tracy.
Happy Friday ladies!
Here is the recipe. It came out of the Cooking Light Magazine years ago. Even for a low fat recipe it still has a few of those pesky calories. I haven't tried making it with Spenda, but thinking maybe you could?
Every time I have made it I have gotten rave reviews about it. ![]()

Shelley, you and your grandson are in my thoughts. I hope he gets better soon. I'm glad your DR find it out about the hypothyroid and you can start managing it. hopefully once it is under control you will be able to shed the pounds.
Margie, I was thinking about you yesterday wondering where you were. Happy Belated Birthday. I think your Birthday's and Anniversaries are a good time to splurge with in reason of course.
I'm making a spinach and artichoke dip for Sunday. I'll have to play with it a little this time around to see if I can cut some calories in it. Thankfully this is a Holiday only dip, so we don't have it too often. ![]()
I'm trying to figure out what else I can make that would be on the low calorie side of things.
OH that does sound yummy, Tracy. Thank you so much for sharing that with us. I'm really gonna have to give this one a try!!
Shelley I'm so sorry that you've been going through so much. I so hope that your grandson is doing better. How old is he? Bless his heart. I'm so sorry that the Dr discovered that you have hypothyroid. But really glad that he caught it and now you are being treated for it. I know it must be frustrating but hopefully everything will straighten itself out now and you can go forth and lose the weight that you want to lose. Have faith and think positive....
Shelley, I hope your grandson feels better soon!!
So far so good this weekend, I had pizza and garlic fingers last night, but both were home made, so it is a BIT better right? Hubby is going out for Super Bowl Sunday so there will be no temptations on that front!! Lats night after we watched movies we went out to shovel the 40 cms of snow we got, now we're waiting for the plow to bury us in so that we can shovel again. LOL!!!
Tracy, continue having a positive weekend! ![]()
Good Evening everyone, thanks for the warm welcome! Had a good week, no cheating, no cravings, no wanting to kill anyone. Alot of running to the bathroom though...(Texas_Sugar maybe thats how the weight is lost by running back n forth to the bathroom) lmao!!! I've been doing a little walking....like i'd park far away and walk or I'd walk somewhere if its not too far. Hell I even went to the mall and walked around it about 2 without even stopping in the stores (very hard for me)
I'm waiting for my foot to heal so I can really do some walking.
I'm glad I have this support group here because sometimes my family and friends don't care to understand what I'm going thru.
Week 1 is done now I'm ready for week 2...hopefully it'll get better!
Thank you all for your support and welcoming.....
Hello Everyone,
I just wanted to check in really quick. I've been reading the posts, just not talking - once I get started I have a hard time stopping!! It's hard to type right now, I;m having an ocular migraine, so it's hard to see the words!
I'm doing ok, weight wise. Our son's wedding is this Sunday. So I'm getting a little stressed. I've got to spend today (and the rest of the week!) working on cakes and being sure I have everything we need. So If I don't join in I'm thinking about all of y'all!
Melissa
Katherine, how is your cold today?
KKC, unless someone is trying to lose weight they really can't understand everything involved in it. It isn't just about changing your diet but changing many parts of yourself.
Now that my parents have both lost weight I think they get it more than they did before.
But that is the best thing about this thread is that we are all going through the same thing. Some of us in different stages, so it helps to see that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That the changes we are making is worth it and that they get easier as we go along.
Mellisa, I hope your migraine goes away quickly. Relax, take care of yourself and don't stress over the cake. Make your time line plan, stick with it and you will be okay.
I'll be thinking of you this week and sending you good caking thoughts.
Margie, How are ya doing today?
My weekend went okay. I did the demo on Saturday. I skipped baking the cookies and bought some cheap ones at Walmart. Everyone was amazed at my super easy to decorate cookies. Hopefully I got some people interested in the classes as well.
Yesterday I snacked more than I probably should have, but I didn't eat all day. I took my granny squares that I have been working on and played with yarn all during the game. At least it kept me busy and away from grazing too much. I did drink a little, but I'm still gonna do that from time to time.
All in all it was a good weekend. And though I don't want the weekend to end, come Monday morning I'm kinda glad to get back to my more stuctured eating times.
Hello everyone.... Wow!! What a busy week-end. Lots of "special" dinners and gatherings but I passed the test. I had a weight loss of 1.6 lbs this morning which made me happy. Still going in the right direction and determined to keep doing so. Got a couple more birthday dinners coming up this week, but I'm learning how to eat out and still stay on the right path.
KKC - sounds like you had a successful week. That's great. I have a knee injury that keeps me from doing a lot of walking. It is very frustrating, I know. Hope your foot heals quickly. Keep up the good work...
Melissa - so sorry about your migraine. I get those too and they are sooooo not fun. Hope you are feeling better now.
Tracy - what all did you end up making yesterday besides the spinich/artichoke dip?
Well I made the Lemon Blueberry Pound Cake and a Banana Spice Pound Cake.
I tried my hand at a green salsa, it came out okay. I also made a french onion dip that had less fat and sodium than the premade bought kind. And I made a yogurt and cucumber dip. Plus I made some cole slaw with a vinagrete dressing, so it was lower fat and had alot of veggies in it.
Momma made a bunch of stuff too. I'm not a big spicy eater so I was able to easily pass up some of it. And the others, well I just tried to stay with smaller portions. At the end of the night we ended up throwing out the dips, partly because alot of them were dairy based and sat out all evening, and the other part was because neither me or momma wanted to have them sitting around tempting us.
Most of the left over cakes are sitting on my desk. There is a piece of each still at my house but that is only because I was trying to put them all in the same cake cover and could only fit half of each. I'm thinking of cutting them smaller and freezing them to have when I feel like something sweet. Or I may just bring them over here after they eat some of this one.
My uncle was picking up my brother lunch and offered to get me some. So I said sure, just surprise me. He made me laugh when he came back cause he was like I got you something healthy. Which it was. He got me grilled shrimp with rice and sauted veggies (yellow squash, brocolli and carrots). Of course there were the fresh hot rolls with it. So I did splurge a little, but it was better and less calories than a fast food meal that's for sure. Tonight I'll eat light again and I've got to make sure I drink plenty to get rid of all the salt I got in my system yesterday.
I'm sad to say that I ignored Hank again this weekend. So tonight I'm going to have to try to make up for that.
Oh that sounds soooo good Tracy. Yeah, I'd cut slices of those cakes and freeze them for times when you want a little something sweet. Your Uncle sounds so nice. He was trying to look out after you, bless his heart.
I think I've asked this before but does anyone here have the Wii Active? I bought it a couple days ago and as soon as I have a few minutes to myself I'm gonna check it out. I also forgot to mention that I recently purchased some Sketchers Shape Ups tennis shoes. Anyone have those? I've tried them on and walked around the house a little and boy do they feel strange. The first day I had them on for about 45 minutes and the next morning my calves were sore. Isn't that something? I'm gonna have to work up to wearing them for longer periods of time. Just weird to me that shoes can do that....
