I'm not sure if the recipie has been posted here, but I keep meaning to get my friend to teach me. Cant seem to find the time. I might get her to email me the recipie and give it a go myself.
Like I said, not a really hard thing to make, just time consuming because you need a few sheets to get a good height, and each sheet has to be cooked individually. Most of us only have 2-3 shelves in the oven and it can take a whole day just to bake enough sheets!!!
I'm originally Russian and we have a similar cake with lot of very thin layers individually baked. They actually very quick to bake as they are VEEEEEEEEEEEEERY thin
It is long to roll though
Usually while you roll one, the other one is baked. I do about 11-17 layers for a cake, takes about 2 hours, but my oven only takes one layer at a time. The filling may be custard or custard with butter. There is a cake with a leo and poppy flowers in my gallery . That is the one.
Now I know you girls are all fast asleep... but I just want to thank RIKASH for organising my avatar photo..... because I am just so pathetic and incapable f doing it myself
Your very welcome Toni
Good morning Pam!!! I know you will be up soon. I was just looking at Torki's torso cake and my husband walked past as I was looking at others..... He asked if I was looking at a pornographic site!!!!! I told him just my CC site!!!!!!!! Maria wrote a very funny comment on another one of the male anatomy photos.... I burst out laughing.
Thanks again kelli.... changed my avatar because i just got sick of looking at myself!!!! ![]()
Morning Toni,
Been up for hours but just not at the computer. We've got geese that have 9 little goslings that escaped under the fence - have had to deal with the combination of a very distraught mother trying to get her babies back and me trying to get 9 little things all running in every direction back with their mother - Rural life?@?#?#
My sister flew out today - Bangkok first stop, then off to Italy(Hi)
, Greece and UK. She's gone for 7weeks.
Had beautiful weather here yesterday (bit blowy last night!) but looks set to be another nice one - might get out into the garden today
ApplegumKitchen,
He-he, what a chase!
Guys, I need an advice. Spent 2 days baking fruitcakes for the miniature Xmas cakes. Have few people interested already .... I cannot quite figure out the time. It seems that 5 hours a bit too much for 27 x 32 cm cake. 8" - 9" I normally bake for 3 1/2 hrs at 140C and having put double the load I thought it should take about 5 hrs. Have anyone had experience baking big fruit cakes?
Oh, yes, and that is me
Yana,
I love the lion on the cake with the poppy's. Is that a fbct? How many layers did that cake have? It looks great.
Leigh
Thanks Leigh!
Sorry for idiot question
. What is "fbct"?
That cake had 15 layers. Was quite high for a Napoleon.
15 layers. fbct is a frozen buttercream transfer

Hold on a second. What Lion are we talking about here? I have few, as my DH is Leo
. The 3D one with the poppy flowers of 2 years back is made of fondant and dusted, the one with sunflowers from this year, is transfered from a photograph to a rolled piece of fondant and then painted.
Thanks jules06!
Yep, that what I was trying to do
I started with regular size for taisting purposes. Did 1 x 6" and number of small single serves. In 2 hours pulled out the small once. Tested the 6" in another 30 min and it looked cooked. Pulled it out, poured over sherry, wrapped it up and left until next day. Unmolded and ...
it was raw in the middle. I ended up baking it another 2 times
Just as well it was for taisting. It looks awful
So for the big once I thought better be safe than sorry and kept it for 5 hours each. Did not trust my testing ![]()

Yana, when I'm baking a large fruit cake, I too start checking every half hour after 3 1/2. It usually pulls slightly away from the sides when done. Although it's a bit hard to test for doneness (is that a word?) using a skewer, I still use one and check for cake batter vs fruit. I also wrap the cake (still in the tin) in a blanket and let it cool off gradually (up to 24 hours) before removing from the tin.
Hope that all makes sense!
Ahh Leo i understand why there are a couple of lions in your gallery. Painted on. Thats awsome painting. I want to try and pint on fondant but I can't seem to paint noramlly let alone on a newish medium. Great job.
Thank you! It was easier than I expected, actually. ![]()
OzCookie,
Thanks for that! It makes perfect sense
I do the same. Looks like I'm doing the right thing. Guess will see in a few days when I cut the cakes. Oh, my, I'm going to be veeeery busy .....
*PHEW* finally caught up on the 11 pages since I last jumped on to CC. For some reason even thought I have this in my 'watched topics', I wasn't getting notifications of new posts.
I nearly p*ssed myself laughing reading abt the boobs and kids - I can relate, and I've only got ONE little boy.
And ohhhh I had a slice of 'torta mil hojas' on Sat night at a chilean friend's birthday party in Carlton. It was yummy, very very sweet. I was wondering abt the sheets of pastry in it. It was hard to cut apparently, my friend was a little upset that the cake was not served in a single piece and looked a tad messy, but it tasted great anyway!
The pirate ship cake I was stressing about turned out rather well, and I gave myself many pats on the back when I finally finished it on Sat afternoon. I've uploaded pictures in my album!
Did anyone decide when the melbournians are meeting? I would love to meet up and put a face to the nicknames, and learn from all of you!
Hi Ladies,
Have just spent the last hour catching up on everything..............all 28 pages!!!!! We are growing rapidly. ![]()
YanaK I did a 16" round fruit cake that took 12 hours to cook. Was absolutely beautiful though. ![]()
I always double line my pans, place a sheet of newspaper under the tin and a tin of water in the oven to keep it moist.
Then when cooked pour over more alcohol place a sheet of greaseproof on top, then a piece of alfoil. Flip over and leave to cool in tin for 24 hours. ![]()
On a different note.................. please pray for my hand to make a speedy recovery. A winch on a roller shutter broke last night and fractured 2 fingers................. on my right hand
And I have 4 cakes due this comimg weekend. 1 for Sunday and 3 for Monday. ![]()
I'm in for Koko Black if they have
cake
and room for a pram ![]()
Cheryl
Owwww! Cheryl that is NOT the way to have a holiday!! You poor thing, I will send wolverine thoughts your way (you know the whole healing yourself instantly thing!) ![]()
Jade, your pirate ship cake looks terrific! I love the wood imprint and all the little pirate men! Great!! ![]()

Oh see, I have a filthy mind, because I went straight to Hugh Jackman in a chesty bonds making her feel better, I know it would make me feel better ![]()
Koko Black don't have cake, but they have chocolate and icecream and good coffee, we could meet at Brunetti's, just off Lygon Street, they have cake and GREAT coffee!
Cheryl, I hope your hand is better soon, you poor thing ![]()
Shame on you Fran!
LOL!
Then again, I have to admit Hugh Jackman in chesty bonds would cure most ills!! ![]()
I'm in for kokoblack or Brunettis. Kokoblack has the best hot chocolate, made with full cream and real pieces of chocolate- very decadent! They also have chocolate/coffee type petit fours - MMMMmmmmm.
I think Brunettis will have room for prams if we meet before or after lunch, or sit outside. Kokoblack is rather small, so depending on how many of us with prams are coming, it might not be suitable.
Cheryl, sending good speedy recovery vibes your way!
Lovely - I love the name Jade, and whilst it is not my real name, I always wanted to name my daughter (if I have any) 'Jade'. I have to admit I have never seen Jade spelled 'J-A-Y-D-E' but it's a nice touch!
Curvy, I have cakenut516 to thank for the pirate figures. I modelled it after hers, in the gallery.
Thanks girls!
P/S: Just wanted to add Mondays (work), Wednesdays,(work) and Tues afternoons (mother's group) are no good for me. If the meeting is on Thurs/Fri, I'll definitely come!
Cheryl - here's a huge (((((((HUG)))))))) and best wishes for a speedy recovery!
Fran... you should be ashamed of yourself! (Though I'm still smiling lustfully to myself!)
Nope, I'm a shame free zone ![]()
Hugh is just my type, big, tall, strapping Aussie boy! Grrrrrarowwww!
My hubby is also a big, tall, strapping Aussie boy, so at least my fantasies are based somewhat in reality ![]()
Jade, guess I got lucky and had my daughter first (then 3 boys) so I didn't have to wait long for the name. Hope you have a girl and get to call her that. It's such a pretty name but can get distorted like other names. She gets JD, jaydee, and others completely out there like jaydizzle lol. Funny thing was when her brother was in grade 6 he wrote a story about our family having a holiday at Philip Island and the teacher crossed out Jayde and wrote Jade in it's place and told him he didn't know how to spell her name. LOLOLOL. I had to set her straight.
Oh and I too went to the Send Hugh Jackman as well. Certainly would make my day (not sure if I would be busy doing cakes if I got that lucky ![]()
)
SIGH I can dream
