I have one for you all......this was after taking my first decorating class and I wanted to practice, so made a cake for a co-worker...... my shells were horrible (still not the best), the writing is a disaster (also still not very good) and figured sprinkles would deter from the lousy icing job. . she did appreciate it and it tasted real good at least!

momlittr: I have to say I looked at your pictures & you can definitely tell an improvement! I still can't do borders & my writing is pitiful ![]()
Thats so funny about the sprinkles...I used to subscribe to that theory also. I thought I could just keep shaking them on & it would cover up my mistakes....it didn't ![]()
I wish I would have taken a picture of this, but a few years ago I tried to make a white cake from scratch...apparently I used baking soda instead of powder or vice versa & put too much vanilla in & tasted like a big old bite of nasty
I think it looked even worse though...I tried to make a whipped topping & it wouldn't set up so this pitiful cake had globs of runny topping sliding down the sides.
You would have thought with as many disasters as I've had that I would have given up by now! I guess I'm waiting for something to go monumentally wrong before I hang up the apron ![]()
Monumentally wrong like killing someone with one of your cakes? ![]()
That just sounded so funny to me, like the fate of the world depends upon our cakes... although sometimes the fate of the party and our children's happiness and hopes for a well adjusted future ... ok maybe I'm exaggerating a tad.
This is what I would consider monumental enough to make me quit(at least for awhile):
Working on a wedding cake for hours & hours ...it looks more perfect than you could have imagined....you drive it there safely, carry it into the hall to set it on the table, trip & fall on top of it. ![]()
This is a wonderful thread. My DH just came in and asked if I was OK. He thought I was in here sniffling or crying"!!!! I told him "NO, I'm in here cracking up and I'm trying to do it quietly!!" ![]()
Anyway, I've had some awful cakes, too. I can't remember who posted about being so proud of her frosted cakes still in the pyrex dish...but that was totally me
. It was a HUGE deal when I graduated to a DOUBLE LAYER Round cake!!!
Oh, the proud baking moments...I'll try to dig for pix.
Anyway, just a question...maybe I missed it...but Traci, WHY did you bake a cockroach cake??? I can't imagine decorating it, yet alone eating it!! I'd like to hear more about that one...
OT, but ccoth: I love your avatar, that's exactly what my smaller KA does to me EVERY time I use it. Use my 6qt soooo much more than that 4.5 qt.
Oh my dear Lord! I am laughing so hard, I have tears coming out of my eyes and can barely get a breath! My husband is laughing at my laughing!
Thank you ladies for sharing these! I am feeling so discouraged today and this is giving me such a good laugh! ![]()
I can't remember who posted the cake with the Oscar but I can see why it would haunt you, he was scary looking. ![]()
see I told zamode......its a great boost when you're feeling intimidated!!!
its nice to know even the good cake makers have bad days!!!!!
Yes twins, you were and are right. However, at this point, I don't see myself improving much! The stories are funny as well as the photos. Kudos to you ladies for posting the pictures. My worst pics are in my gallery! I asked Jackie to remove a few!
Zamode......OMG what are you talking about!!!!! Your roses are beautiful!! and your icing looks really smooth!! Ok granted....I didn't look at the clown cake...i don't do clowns.....but from a distance it looked great!!
I would say you are definitely going to be great!! you are off to a wonderful start!!!
Zamode: Twinline is right...your roses are beautiful!! I seriously have tried to make one every which way & have given up for now.
I still can't smooth a cake at all..I've tried Viva, spatula dipped in hot water, IMBC, spackling tool, misting with spray bottle, upside down method, applying with icing tip, thinning out my icing & tried different ratio of butter&shortening. You would think I could find at least one way that works, but I'm not giving up yet!!
I know it gets discouraging sometimes but as you can see everyone goes through it!
Okay goodnight everyone, I will check back in the morning.
Ok my cake I added a while ago.. And each time I look at it, I think I could have made it look alot better...But we all learn.. LOL..
On the way to the party, I looked down at the cake and thought it should have been Dino from the flint stones. At least now I know how I could make him if one is ever needed.. LOL
My worst cake was this one not even a year ago! It was for my DH who is a big bike rider. The wheels were pretty tasty. They were ice cream with crushed oreo tires and it had some caramel and chocolate fudge on top.
How ugly is this thing? LOL!!! I am so amazed at how far I've come in the past 10 months!!! I am so embarrassed that this cake is in my gallery. I was so proud of this cake when I made it!
krissy.. wow you have come along way.. now i just need to get there.. LOL
ge.. well if you really look,,, LOL.. and to think it was supose to of been a purple sax.. LOL.
krissy_kze: OMG those sound like the best tasting wheels I have ever heard of ...mmmmm oreos..mmmm ice cream & chocolate fudge...mmmm..caramel - I am seriously slobbering all over myself ![]()
Please don't be embarrassed to have cakes like that in your gallery...I looked through it & you have done some amazing cakes. All it does is prove that everyone has to start from somewhere.
Think of it this way, wouldn't most of us feel better if we went through(insert name of famous decorator here)'s portfolio & found something like those giant baby booties? Everyone has these cakes that they hide....they just don't tell anyone about them!
I would LOVE to see the earliest cakes from Colette or Elisa Strauss!
Maybe one day I'll write a book and include my bike cake. ROFL!!
All ya have to do is look in my photos, at least half of them I don't like. Here lately there have been some Beautiful cakes posted in the gallery. CC sure does have some talented people![]()
Ok I have really enjoyed this thread, and I don't think it is fair to continue laughing my head off without sharing my little disaster. This picture only shows the first half of the story. The second half resulted in my running to my room crying and my DH feeling so bad for me that he got me the Wilton classes for Easter last year. I saw this in a magazine and thought "Hey I can do that" Well thank goodness I didn't have to travel with it, and it was for family. Every last candy corn and nutterbutter slid through the canned icing and landed on the plate. There were several jokes about the turkey being scared to death and all his feathers falling out.
I wish I had a picture of the cake I made DH 3 years ago for his birthday. The chocolate cake cracked in half and the icing fell off in clumps!! I had to keep smoothing it back on. Now THAT was a pretty cake!
My all time favorite is still the lady bug that looks like it was in a fight with an exterminator.
NEWTODECORATING, I can see that your turkey is really cute. You snapped the picture at the right time.
I just made a whimsical mad hatter cake and had the camera ready so as soon as I put the top tier on, my DH snapped a pic (just in case it was going to fall over).
This weekend, I made a cake for my sister. I made the carrot cake with honey maple icing from Dede Wilson's book. Well, the icing seperated. I even tried to keep on beating and beating, but to no avail. It looked like curtled milk. We were late for the party, so people just ate it as is. It was sliding off the case in clumps. I told my DH to take the leftovers to work today and just sneak it in the cafeteria and not say who it's from.
krissy_kze ... I just peeked at your gallery. Your cakes are adorable. I especially like the heffalump and the turkey in disguises. How creative.
