Hi, i am finished with this cake, however in an attempt to save myself the expensive already covered foam core board, i went to hobby lobby and bought some big sheet and attempted to cut the rounds out myself. It was very hard to get them smooth when cutting (I used a little razor) and I had hoped when covered it would look better.
I can't take the cake off this board so I have to somehow modify the edge. I attemped to wrap it in ribbon, but even the ribbon looked lumpy.
Anybody have any ideas?
And any other way to make the edge smooth next time I try this?
Thanks!
LL

What a beautiful cake! Dont have an answer for you...would an emery board work to semi smooth it, then wrap with ribbon? Or use something that hardens to fill in the holes to make is smooth?? Just some thoughts, maybe someone here knows what to do. Jen

Your cake looks amazing! You did a great job!! What about a ruffle type of ribbon/lace glued to the top of the board! Good luck!

How about piping some grass all over the board and on the edges as well.

Hi. Lovely cake. Try rolling a long piece of fondant into a sausage to go around the board and fill in the hollows. Then put a ribbon around it. I hope this helps

I think you already have some great ideas to work with. I just wanted to add that your cake is really gorgeous. Very neat and the colours all match so well.

I'd try cutting off the pokey ends then filling the holes with gumpaste or fondant and smoothing into as much of a circle shape as possible then try the ribbon or cutting a strip of fondant to cover edge.

Or try cutting a cardboard circle about inch larger than the round you have the cake sitting on. Cover it set the cake on it then extend the grass over the edge of the round and add some flowers all around then it will look like you meant to do it. I hope I worded that right. Lovely cake, like the way you placed the flowers.

Piping all around makes it impossible to handle I did this once on my football cake and it was disastrous to carry. You must learn from your mistakes but it is a very nice cake. I would probably leave it !!!! Whatever you do needs to be simple to keep the eyes away from that area...

Love the cake!

Try using a textured trim that is thicker than ribbon. I don't know the name for it however it is sewn together. It comes in all kinds of forms from lace to cotton...I guess sort of what might be used on the edge of pillow? Take a look at the tiered baby shower cakes in my pics and you will see I used a multicoloured trim. I think this would definitely hide your rough edges and also add some colour and/or texture to your board.

I've seen this ribbon stuff in the fabric store before...it looks like it's braided. I don't know what it's called but it would be perfect because it wouldn't be all lacy or anything and it wouldn't have to look perfect because the lumps would probably blend in with a braid...I wonder if you have any kind of string or something that you could braid and put around like that? I don't know what amount of time you need to get this done...

Well with a cake like that I think most will be looking at it and not the board. You did a great job! If you really feel the need to fix it what about putting roping around it?

If you have pink tissue (to match pink flowers or even better pink and violet), cut strips little bit higher than board, pinch and make ruffles, attach with glue gun and then finish with thin green ribbon. I think the ruffles will camouflage the uneveness of the board. HTH.

Your cake is wonderful! I like the idea of a ruffled ribbon on the bottom. Any fondant/gumpaste or buttercream will make it very hard to handle as someone noted. Maybe something checkered or even simple will do the trick.

Good luck!

I too think if you do anything too much you may make it look worse. You could get away with it as it is. An idea though could you paint the board with food colouring in a brown and put maybe put brown sugar or something ontop and round the edge. To get thhe idea of gravel.

Hope this helps.

What about rope around the edge to carry the theme? Hot glue it. Or use the rope used in macrame, or twist rafia grass into a rope and glue--it comes in alot of different colors--white, green, tan......???

I like the idea of some kind of cording or rope of some type like MCook said. It would help carry out your theme. icon_smile.gif

Just a tip for cutting foam core boards in the future -- Use a heated craft knife. It cuts through the foam a lot easier and leaves a clean edge. You can buy electric ones that heat themselves and keep an even temperature. They are usually found with the woodburning tools. Often with multiple tips one being a cutting blade.

I have also read to cut the board, fill the edge with royal icing to make a smooth edge. Haven't tried it, though!

Everyone will be so busy looking at the gorgeous cake they will not even notice the board!

I would leave it. If you MUST do something, I would try gluing some rope braiding like suggested above. Stay away from any icing on the edges or you will mess it up while transporting/carrying it.

I would say if you do rope get a white or pink colored one to match the feminine flowers of the cake, not a jute or twine brown one. It would be too rough I think.

My thought would be to take it to the location, set it where it is going to be, then pipe the grass out. OR put a slightly bigger covered board under it, hot glued to the one w/ the lumpy edges, and then pipe the grass all over. That way you wouldn't have to do it on-site.

Good luck whatever you decide, it's a beautiful cake!

I like the rope idea the best! Definitely agree it should be either white or pink (to match flowers)!!

Love the cake!!!!

I like the rope idea too, but would definitely go with like a white NYLON, because natural ropes are messy...you don't want fuzzy threads on that beautiful cake!
