I did see it and I have to agree. I thought the Bullfighter was awesome looking. I am a fan of hers as well, but I was not all that impressed with her design last night. I felt really bad for the guy (can't remember his name) that the whole thing fell apart.

I loved the Bull Fighter also, I think the judges didn't like the cake he was holding. I like to see Duff and Collette go at it, the last challenge the two were at each other.

They should have judged also on level of difficulty. Collette whips out tiered cakes on a daily basis. I love the work that she does but her designs seem to all be so similar (this one was actually VERY similar to the one she made for the wedding cake challenge that she won). The Matador cake & the Lance Armstrong cake rocked! Very different & original. I think the judges definitely had their favorite picked out from the beginning.

Just my two cents

I WAS HOPING FOR THE LANCE ARMSTRONG CAKE
BECAUSE IT SEEMED TO BE THE ONLY CAKE WITH A REAL SPORT THEME, BUT I TOTALY LAUGHED SO MUCH WHEN DUFF PUT THAT FISH WITH NO TAIL ON THE TABLE!

I watched it and I TOO thought the Matador was robbed. That cake was exquisite! All in all, the show was cool, and the bickering between Collette and Duff had me chuckling. They act like brother and sister, but you can tell they have a great respect for each other. I groaned as Duff's cake collapsed, but got a BIG grin when I saw the lone fish on the table. Poor guy!

(Please, please don't type in all caps...only type in all caps when you want to scream at someone online! icon_biggrin.gificon_wink.gif )

I thought the bullfighting cake should have won for artistry and complexity, but had to agree with those judges who felt the cake the matador was holding was out of place for the theme. Tongue-in-cheek, for sure, but not adhering to the theme.

I was terribly disappointed by Duff's attitude. I felt he gave no respect to the producers of the show, who handpicked him out of hundreds or thousands of super-talented decorators to participate in the competition. In my opinion, he should not be asked back.

Colette's cake was not what I expected out of her. It did seem quite plain...but for the challenge of doing a sports theme with just a few hours' notice, she did pull out a beautiful cake.

As did the others...

The matador was actually by Mike's Amazing Cakes. He does gorgeous work & doesn't get nearly enough recognition.

Peachez is right. I think they just give some of the challenges to Collette P. I am a fan of her work-she's greatly talented, but I've watched a couple of them that she should have placed in-not won. Hope that didn't offend anyone!

As I stated in the other threads about this, the matador was a nice um, whatever it was, but it wasn't much cake and this was a cake contest not a sugar creations contest.

The rules were there for a reason. Make your CAKE sport related.

I suppose the idea of "sport" is becoming very subjective, when you go form fishing, to bike riding to mini-golf to boxing etc. But just because something looks nice, doesn't mean it should win. I didn't feel the "Lance" cake had enough to do with sport, though it looked nice.

And as I also stated before, I'm in agreement that they need new contestants. It's gettign really stale watching the same people not only "compete", but also win. How abotu someone who HAS NOT been featured in some way on Food Network? Or someone who isn't well known for cakes?

my interpretation of the matador cake was that cake decorating was his sport so he was actually challenging with the cake. if anyone understands where im coming from. you know like you challenge a bull. thats what i saw.

I watched the show last night as well and I must say, I don't really think that Colette should''ve won either. It seems to me that all her cakes look pretty similar. (Not that I could even come CLOSE to competting with her..) I think that she was even a bit surprised by the win.

i was disappointed mike's bullfighting cake didn't win, it definitely was the most creative, clever and challenging. as far as it not being sport related, i disagree, collette's cake wasn't sport related if you really want to get technical, just a blue cake with a fish.

I was not at all impressed with the Cake Diva's cake. And this is not the first time either. I live in Hoboken (where she is from and has her business) and she is supposedly all the rage. The cakes on her site look nice, but every time she is on one of these challenges, her cakes don't look half as good as most of those on this site!

i was thinking the same thing about the cake diva, maybe she's good with doing a cake that you show her but not anything off the top of her head.

I believe the matador was by Mike's Amazing Cakes.....

I have left comments on another thread about the actual cakes but I don't understand why some of you think the themes were not sports-related?

Bullfighting....sport...gory and cruel, but, yes, it is a sport
Boxing....sport
Cycling.....sport
Fishing.....sport....hence the term "sports fishing"
Golf....sport....although mini-golf is questionable....I may be wrong....do they have mini-golf competitions?

For those of you who didn't think the cakes were sports-related...what sport would you have chosen?
Perhaps there is a fine line between the themes they chose and the way they were executed.

Yes, "Cakes by Sam" is a woman --> Samantha Parsley. She's the Arkansas State ICES rep & has never competed on FoodTV.

The matador was done by Mike McCary of www.mikesamazingcakes.com

I think I would have picked baseball.

I just happened to see this the other day. I hate to critisize because I know how hard it can be, but I think the Cake Diva has a tendancy to do very sloppy work. However, she's just been lucky to have been noticed. There is a woman here in Florida who does amazing work and could certainly compete on that level. Some people just are not interested. I guess it's who you know. Colette's cakes are always beautiful but I think that Mike's cake was the best. He's in a league of his own and while I understood what they were trying to say as to his cake not matching their idea of the theme, I disagree. It certainly did. They have to think outside the box. His cake was amazing. thumbs_up.gif

i was thinkins something with ice or snow also mahal!!!! I do think the theme was to open to be interpruted in such a narrow margin. anything you compete in i feel is a sport. im in a prof. scrabble league and all the people who play refer to it all the time as a sport.lol

I just finished watching it and had to put my thoughts out ...

Although I love Collete's work, I knew before she made her cake what it would look like. I almost seemed predictable, and it was similar to the Wedding Cake Competition that she won. She makes great whimsical cakes that I love!

The Lance Armstrong cake was interesting. But, like Keegan (last name?) said, I didn't understand the castle part and, up til today, I didn't even know Armstrong had a biography out there. If anyone knows what the Castle is supposed to represent, please let me know! I am curious now icon_smile.gif

I loved the Matador. As the host pointed out, it was a cake competition, so having a matador hold a tiered cake made sense to me, and having a bull probably wouldn't sit well will some people.

The thing that bugs me the most is that the judges claim it came down to one point! But Mike's cake had so many challenging components to it that it makes no sense that he didn't win. Mike had constructed a 3D human figure, complete with chocolate molded face and torso, his cake stand construction was not typical of a regular tiered cake and the hand-painted detail work was amazing! The whole cake simply defied gravity! And if we're talking about theme intrepretation, take out the color and the fish from Collete's Cake, and there really isn't anything sports-related there! Mike's ability to think outside the box (or "tiered cakes") is amazing, and that should count for something too.

Sorry for the long post, but I too think Mike was robbed.

Coney Island...every year....the funny thing is that the winner for the past few years has been this tiny guy....it's amazing to see!

mvucic...the castle part of the cake was supposed to be a French chalet....that's what they said. It looked like a fairytale cake to me with the book and all. What annoyed me a little was why was he so darn secretive about what he was doing?

Mike had said during the program that since there is so much controversy surrounding bull fighting he decided to leave out the bull & interpert the fight as being with the cake. I thought that was a great idea. I agree that he was robbed mvucic! He was so preparred...did anyone see that he had made a small figure of what the cake would look like out of clay?

I agree with the comments about the cake diva. Ugh, is all I'll say because if you can't say something nice.... oh heck, her work is second rate. I've seen MUCH better cakes from the talented people on this site! They were saying that she had such a difficult time figuring out what to do & came up with her idea an hour before they started. They kept showing all the contestants at work. When the showed her it was in a blonde wig barking orders at & insulting people who I'm assuming work for her. Was that supposed to be funny? I'd say tacky was more like it.

Ok, Cake Diva, I don't get her! Yes on her site the cakes look ok, if you look close some of them are sloppy, but both Challenges she has done with her carousel and this one, were so sloppy and amateurish, I don't get it! Her technique is sloppy, and messy. Her little clips are funny, but when she is actually competing, she has no sense of humor and is pretty nasty if you ask me. I'd be surprised if they asked her back.

After the show, I was looking through People, and there was an ad for the Food Network, and front and center was Duff (who cracks me up, a punk cake decorator!) IF you look at his site, www.charmcitycakes.com, his cakes are beautiful. I never heard of him before he was on Sugar Rush, but evidently he was in the scary cake contest also.

When I took Colettes class last June, she told us about this mystery challenge, and that she had mentioned it to Food TV as an idea so everyone starts out on the same playing field. I thought it was a cool idea, and as Duff said, "We're all cake decorators, what do we know about sports!?"

The castle was supposed to represent the French countryside (i.e.- Tour De France). Fine, but there wasn't much representing actual sport there. As one of the Judges or otherwise officials said, for a great birthday cake, yes, but not for a sport cake.

Again I don't disagree that the matador was a fine work of ART at it's best, when it comes to sugar. But being made of 75% cake (as the rules stated), and holding a cake, are 2 different things.
