What do you do while you are doing your sugar work, or detailing a complicated cake?
I either have Pandora on and am listening to "Edith Piaf" radio station... or I have my ipad on and I am watching old black and white movies in the background. Right now I am working on a dozen gardenia's and have the Return of Sherlock Holmes with Jeremy Brett. :) oh and I am going to try a book on tape.
I would like to know what everyone else does. Do tell :)
AI hate having any kind of noise on in the background, i like to be in complete calm and quiteness and just get "in the zone" . I cant concentrate otherwise : )
I used to have the TV on but I discovered I work best in complete silence. I usually am up very late at night working when I have a cake to do and I stay focused more and work more quickly if it's quiet. Of course it's hard to turn off my brain which is solving personal as well as world problems...which may be why the other stuff was a distraction! ;D
During the day, I enjoy the quiet and when necessary, talking to myself to figure out a problem - haha
When working at night, I have my laptop on, but I listen more than watch.
I put spotify on, but mostly it's to stop my laptop from hibernating if I'm going back and forth to look at a recipe or a technique.
AIf I'm at work, I work in silence. If I'm at home and the little is up, I just have TV on in the background. If he's asleep, it's either silence or oldies on my iPod. I'm a huge nerd for Barry Manilow and the Bee Gees. :-)
AWhen Pandora is on, it's probably going to be on Dire Straits or Mark Knopfler channel...me loves MK. If not Netflix then I have NPR on. Especially on Saturday morning. Love NPR on Saturday mornings. Bob Edwards Weekend, Car Talk, Wait Wait, then jazz..makes the day fly by.
AI like having music on, that kind of soothes me and makes me feel normalish, rather than stressing about making everything look perfect

NPR gets me through everything. Did you hear this weekends Wait wait... and then there is a new show right after.. Lord, and Car Talk... I laughed all Saturday long. My huge favorite is all day Friday with Science Fridays, and anything Diane Rehm. I have bought more books from her show than anything. It is clock work for me, before I do anything in the morning the first motion is to put on NPR and get the morning news, a few shows and then I head into Pandora. I also believe Pandora was heaven sent for people in our line of work. I do amazon prime for streaming but I have a few friends that swear by netfix. I am not sure how much of a difference it is. ok, now you got way more information than you probably expected ;)
And for everyone that works in silence... WOW... More power to you. After 6-7 hours hunched over working in utter quiet... I would start drooling at the mouth.. ;) and yes I have three kids so I believe silence is golden. I just wouldn't be able to work without something in the background especially with the hours I put in on sugar work alone.
I am so glad with all the comments :) I like to see what everyone else does.
Depends. Sometimes it's complete silence, other times my iphone is in it's speaker system with the new Queensryche CD blasting or some Alter Bridge :).
I watch a Craftsy class. So cool concentrating on something else to take the tension off of the design I'm doing.
If it's mindless detail, like making flowers, I watch TV shows on Amazon. If it's stuff I really have to concentrate on, atm it's Gabrielle Aplin music, something easy to hum along to that won;t get me all riled up, haha.
I cannot handle silence, even if I am fighting a migraine, I will put on a white noise machine.
Either Pandora - obsessed with Alabama Shakes and Mumford and Sons lately, or watch TV shows or movies that I have already seen - if it's a new episode I get too distracted lol - honestly it's mostly Dr Who I watch/listen to :)
When I'm baking, I play intense music really loud to drown out the oven - Skrillex, deadmau5, the Mars Volta, Led Zeppelin, Jack White. Once in a while opera arias. I have to be careful with the dubstep because it can slow me down and I like to bake fast.
For decorating, I turn the tv to a movie I like ok, but have already seen. That way I'm not distracted and don't miss anything when I tune it out.
AFor baking it's mostly silence cos having the mixer on kinda gets in the way. But for decorating? Awww yeah! Gotta have my African/Caribbean gospel music on. 'Wine-ing' the waist and twerking all day long. Glory! BUahahahahahaha!!!
Just kidding... about the twerking. hehehe.:D

Hey twerking is at least good exercise! I wonder if there' a twerking work out video..
AI'm sure there is one out there. I totally agree about it being exercise cos I know when I watched a 'How to twerk' video on YouTube and tried to follow along my legs got tired from all the squatting. LOL!
Silence for me unless I am following along with a tutorial on a new method or flower. But then I cannot sit for too long at a time so continually jump up to move around.
Mind you the surroundings might be silent but my brain does not like to stay silent for more than a milisecond.
