LOL! I've gotten that question before. My answer is always the same: "I already cut down on the amount of sugar in the cake, so you will get a great balance of sweetness." When the give me their feedback after a few days, they agree with me. icon_biggrin.gif

We need to remember that many clients are expecting us bakers to please their every needs, so I've learned to meet them halfway without jeopardizing our product authenticity.

I got recently

"So...I know this is gonna sound dumb..but you just stick the cake in the oven and then decorate it? pause realizes this is UBBER stupid..then says well yes I know you stick it in an oven but I mean you just do that all yourself?"  I answered the question and then they follow with "So you bake it in your oven?"

I think my face was in shock..lol not to mention I had read another posters HILARIOUS comments on this same question thinking surely no one will ever ask me that.

Call yesterday "My husband and I want to order a cake for our anniversary. A very very small cake."

Ends up it was for just the two of them.

Are you kidding me? The saddest part is someone I know referred them only by seeing my work and obviously

has no pricing idea.

Then the girl I made a free wedding cake for church for who never said thanks. I introduced mysefl on sunday and let her know I was the baker. Her reply "Thanks, it was nice." Seriously you got a $150 wedding cake for free with couture design with a weeks notice and all you can say was Thanks it was nice@@@!!!!

Supposedly they didn't even want to cut it they took a million pictures but then when she meets me says basically nothing. Never again.

I just realized that we've kept this thread rolling since December, and we're closing in on the 2000th post.icon_eek.gif

And "smittyditty," purely out of morbid curiosity, where had you just "read another posters HILARIOUS comments on this same question"?

On the topic of putting things in ovens, I just got off the phone with a woman who I'm taking a cake to tomorrow. I told her it needed to be refrigerated overnight because it was cream cheese icing. So she says "when we serve it, should we warm it up first? Maybe put it in the oven for a little bit?" icon_eek.gif I pretty much yelled at her no, do not put it in the oven, what the heck?

I'm sorry I don't remember the poster..It was so funny though I was in tears and it was from this thread. Who knows what page its on???They were talking about how they told the client that basically they stick their cake in the oven and bam it grows a lipstick, mirror, ect. I can't remember it all it was too funny.

Mine was a wedding cake the person was commenting on totally unrelated in theme.

Things NOT to ask a baker? Definitely not: 'Was it baked (in the oven)?'

Young girl comes to pick up her purse and make-up cake. Looking suspiciously at the cake asks 'Was it baked?'

Me: 'What exactly? .....The cake? Of course.' .......(I usually bake all my cakes - unless you wanted your purse full of liquid s#@t but you didn't specify that in your order. But you are right, it would make the MOISTEST cake ever but at the same time also clean and modern one...icon_wink.gif)

Girl: - 'Everything.'

Sure. I put a cake drum in my magic oven and a purse, fondant lipsticks, eyeshadows and nail polishes grow overnight like mushrooms. The only hitch: I have to bake the cake drum 2 days in advance otherwise it wouldn't have time to harden enough.

Apart from that, I don't enjoy working with people who ask for 'no buttercream and no ganache' in their cake.

Found it here you go...So funny

Asking something like " should a cream cheese frosted cake be warmed up before serving " shows how many people have no cooking or baking  skills these days.

I bet more than half the nation eats out every night . But that in itself is a whole different topic .

AI had a customer come in to the store bakery today (Sunday) and say they needed a white cake with buttercream icing. I proceeded to show him what we had in the case, and he said, "You can't make me a fresh cake right now? I'm supposed to be at the party in an hour."

I was so tempted to say "Sure, you want fries with that?" I know we are a store bakery and all, but it's NOT a drive thru...sheesh!

Luna you could have said that with humor. You'd be surprised what a little chuckle will let you get away with. Plus it still gets your point across. ;)

Yesterday a lady at walmart from my church says "Oh I saw your wonderful cakes, I have some people lined up that I know will want to order from you. Now if I can get a great deal on some cakes for this fundraiser. I'd like a Batman, Castle, superman..."

I really need to have a monitor for myself. I just busted out laughing as the list started. I couldn't help myself. Really I'm so bad. Then I wasn't to tactful with my answer. "Nope Not Even, I can't afford to waste that kind of money as a start up business at this time. I told her the cake she saw took me at least 3 days of being away from my family. I need profit before I can do charity." " I then told her I could possibly do 1 cake depending on price she wanted to pay"  She then says no i need a ...and begins the list..Nope not gonna happen

Looks at fully decorated cake.   Looks at me.  Looks at cake.

``So, what kind of cake mix do you use?``

Reminds me of a story I read about a well known photographer arriving at a dinner party.  the hostess welcomed him, complimented him, and said, `You must have a really good camera!``  He said nothing but at the end of the meal sat back, and complimented her stove.   The cake mix thing just boggles me, I had that recently at a party, I attended which one of my cakes was served.  The woman said she worked at a new local bakery and her mind was absolutely blown that after being asked repeatedly which cake mix I use, that I told her I work from scratch.

My brother once said to my dark chocolate cake with nutella buttercream.  ``Its just so GOOD!  Its like the best Deep and Delicious (frozen cake from the grocer).``   Hmmm,  he didn`t make my No Cake For You list but he was awfully close for a second.

AWho knew Betty Crocker makes a mix you just add eggs and oil to and get a 4 tiered ganache filled fondant covered cake complete with gumpaste peonies and a fondant ribbon! Of course you have to pay extra for the decorated board, better off picking that one up in your box of Duncan Hines.

Here is an inquiry from my website.  I underlined the part I found funny.  Wedding cake flavor?  I get that one a lot.  My usual response goes something like "Wedding cake is not A flavor, it is any cake, in any flavor, found at a wedding."

Name =

Phone =
Email =
Event Date = 07/30/13
Event Type = Birthday For Leona
Event Count = 6" round should be sufficient
Event Theme = Lot of pastel flowers
Additional Information = Leona loves wedding cake, can you make a white cake that tastes like wedding cake? My email didn't seem to work when you tried to respond to me so I left my phone number.  Thank you! Angie

A couple weeks ago I got a girl who is planning her sister's baby shower. She sent a photo, three tiered cake, very cute. I gave her the price and my usual info. She wrote back that her budget was $50 less than I had quoted, and then asked, "If we change the colors from brown, pink, and green, to yellow, pink, and green, will the cake be less?"

Because...yellow food coloring  costs $50 less than brown?

Lurker here for years but had to add

So I'm laughing out loud reading all these and my teen age daughter asked what was so funny and if I'd read a few to her and her friend.  I read the above one and my daughter's friend looks at me all puzzled and asks " Aren't all brown cakes chocolate?  I didn't know there was brown coloring."  She was so serious and I couldn't help myself ; I laughed so hard the tears rolled.

On that same note I was asked once how brown icing got that color.  A lot of things went through my mind but with a barely straight face I told her that  either it's chocolate icing or tinted with brown food coloring.

Answer: Because I don't have a hotel room on-site, for those who insist on while-you-wait service.

And as to brown, well, there's also molasses, dark corn syrup, caramel, grade B maple, various spices, and so forth.

Yes I'm aware of all this now, but at the time I was really young and very new to cake decorating so I refering to my own dumb comment back to a dumb question.  As in I made the dumb comment.   sorry that wasnt clear.

edited to add:   Just after the movie The Help came out,  I made a chocolate cake with chocolate filling for my daughter's dance studio.  A gentleman there asked me if it was made with all food grade ingredients as he had seen this movie and didnt trust anything chocolate anymore.

Actually, a number of places are selling a cake flavor called "wedding cake." Duff Goldman has a "wedding cake" flavored ice cream, Walmart sells a "cake flavored" vodka, and Sprinkles Cupcakes makes a "wedding cake" flavored cupcake, one of their best sellers.
