...but it was outside, not in the shop. I had JUST left. I live 3 minutes away and had been home less than 5 minutes when the restaurant next door called and said I needed to get back asap. The electrical box outside my back door was sparking "....like the 4th of July!" he said.
By the time I got back, the fire had pretty much burned itself out. Fire dept was already there. We had to wait for the electric company to come and shut off the power to see what was what.
Landlord will need to hire an electrician to repair the whole thing. Fire appears to have been contained outside the wall, but until the electrician looks at my breaker box, we've no idea how far inside the damage may have traveled.
The electrical wiring outside the building are HUGE wires!!! I doubt I could wrap my hand around them and touch fingers, and they were burnt to a crisp. Said it was a short in the wiring. The restaurant next door has partial power and I have none. The space on the other side of me is empty.
The good news ... I DID get the cookie order baked today! (whew!). I don't have a wedding this weekend. And the small catering that was tentative for tomorrow was postponed by the client. (yay!)
The only concern I have right now is the 30 lbs of meatballs in my freezer, and the multiple batches of cookie dough my girls made for me yesterday that's in my 'frig. I can move the meatballs to my home freezer, if I have to. I'm just not gonna open the refrigerator or freezer for awhile.
You have to consider yourself extremely lucky! It could have been so much worse. 30 lbs of meatballs compared to a serious injury, wow.
Oh debi, that sucks! Luckily it was on the outside of your shop and didn't destroy any of your equipment!
I hope you get up and running in time and don't lose any of your meatballs or cookie dough! Now that would really suck.
Do you know yet, what caused the sparks? Good thing your neighbour noticed it quickly.
Good luck getting everything back up and running.
You are so right. It seems silly to even list 30 lbs of meatballs as a "concern"!
My parents had two housefires by the time I was 14, so (pardon the pun) but it's a big hot button with me.
Oh....forgot to add ...... if any of you remember at the end of May, I had a graduation cake that was canceled because the family's home was hit by a tornado. So I took the cake to the fire dept. It turns out it that the fire dept that responded was from that fire station! They remembered the cake, too!
So while we're all standing around waiting for the power company to do their thing, I went inside and grabbed a tray of cookies that were leftover and was walking around the parking lot offering cookies to all the firemen!!
That's so sweet of you, I'm sure they gobbled them all up!!
Luckily it was outside of the shop and no one was hurt.
debi, I am sorry to hear about your day. I am glad no one was hurt and it was contained outside. Keep us posted I hope there is no futher damage . Le'Ann
Sorry to hear about your fire..That's terrible. At least no one was hurt. I live in the Toronto area and just had a HUGE propane fire..It has affected so many people. Its sad...
Good luck with your meatballs...
So sorry about the fire. Seems like karma was working for you. No wedding or big catering this week-end. Fire Department that had received the cake called and hopefully most the damage outside the building.
Seriously, I am sorry and glad it was not any worst. Hang in there and keep the good karma working.
A close shave, since you just left the shop, even though the fire wasnt inside-it could have been, thank the good Lord!
Debi, sorry to hear about the fire and glad you are okay. How interesting about the fire department. Hope you don't have too much damage on the inside or with your equipment. God Bless, terri.
Phew... I was hoping this thread was going to turn out better than the "worst case". Glad it wasn't as bad as it could have been!
Oh Indy!! I am so sorry this has happened to you! I'm so glad that everyone is OK. I know what a hassle and headache this is.
Good luck with putting the pieces back together - just know your whole CC family is thinking about you and your balls! haha
Indydebi,
you really are SOOOO lucky. I am sure you have imagined over and over how much worse it could have been. I am so glad YOU are ok.
- just know your whole CC family is thinking about you and your balls! haha
Just so I'm clear on this ..... we ARE talking cookie dough balls, right??
Hubby tells me, "I can't believe you ... you have a fire at your shop and you're walking around playing Southern Gramma to a bunch of fireman, giving them cookies, and somewhere along the line, you manage to slip your biz card to one of 'em and let 'em know you give firemen a 20% discount."
I said, "Hmmm..... young, good looking, well built, studly firemen and Debi's is schmoozin' 'em with cookies. I'm sorry ... what was the question again? I seemed to have lost my train of thought, there!"

HAHAHAHA- Meatballs!
oh how fortunate that it was caught in time-hopefully most of the damage is outside and didn't effect any internal wiring. bet those firemen were thinking that this was their lucky day
Debi, only you could have fun and get business from a fire and no electricity!! Glad nobody was hurt. Hope your balls make it
Gotta luv those fireman.... HMM I am married to one HAHA! LOL I am really thankful you are okay.... remember everything is insured and replaceable, take care and everything will be okay, Glad to hear you are doing well. I hope you can get back and running smoothly.
Clarissa
WOW Debi-thank goodness everyone is okay and it was contained. Hopefully it isn't something you have to spend a bunch of time or money to fix. I think you are on to something offering the firemen some cookies-they gotta eat too you know...and a good word of mouth from a young hot fireman is better than any other marketing strategy!!
debi, glad everything was outside and hopefully you'll be back soon. btw good job with those firemen
Debi-- I am so sorry about the fire! I am glad to hear you and everyone is ok! I hope things can be repaired quickly!-- Maybe one of those cute firemen do a bit of handyman work on the side?!? JK!
Keep your chin up! It could have been a horrible situation! Even though it was bad-- you were still blessed!
Debi! Was the Lord ever looking out for you!
Catering job cancelled; no wedding order and everything else....wow!
Looks like you will be taking a short vacation - a day or so anyway NOw you have time to play around here
I am sorry that this happened, but thankful that no one was hurt and it didnt seem to damage or get in the way of any orders. i pray for a speedy turn around and that you can get back in as soon as possible.
Hey, Debi, sorry to hear about the fire. I am very glad you are alright. Ya know...good thing you needed a few days off to catch up on CC huh? I'm sure all will be well on the inside!
((HUGS))
The fireman next to me is an electrician as well. Maybe one of yours is too? Unfortunately mine is not eye candy in the least bit though.
Good luck with everything!
Jen...
I'm glad that you are alright and your business and thank God nobody is hurt it seems that everything worked in your favor. That is a blessing.
somebody's got an angel! glad to hear no one was hurt and nothing was destroyed. many good thoughts that you can be up and running again soon.
good luck!
Our church kitchen had a similar fire, but it burned about 1/4 of the building. No one was there, but a couple was going u there to fish cleaning for their family reunion and found it. Water was poring out and then they opened the door and smoke poured out. They didn't get hurt, thank the good Lord. They had no idea it was all smoke because it is normally very dark and tinted windows.
I am glad no one was hurt, either time!!
Debi-
I'm so glad that wasn't worse! I hope it all gets fixed soon and you're back in business.
And I would have been schmoozin' the young hot firemen too! Make the most of a bad situation, I say.....
