How Do You Make The "lid" For A Closed Box Cake?

i'd like to know too although i think they are usually made of gumpaste
I made a gift box cake recently. I frosted it in buttercream and then used fondant for the lid. This was my first try - I covered the top first and then cut strips for the side of the lid and brushed the edges lightly with a damp brush and then attached each side. This is how it looked:

Here's how I do it: Cut a square piece of fondant or gumpaste 1" bigger all they way around so let's say your box cake is 6" square - you would cut your fondant top 8" square so that you would have a 1" overhang on each side so that it looks like a lid. After cutting the lid, you will need to cut 1" sqaures from each corner so that when you lay it on top of the box the the sides of the lid meet. Just use a bit of crisco to smooth the corners together and you have a lid!! Here is a pic of a small box I did this month.

Judi,
I made one (in my photos) and I used, like you said, just a second piece of fondant for the lid.
Mine was a 6" square fondant-covered cake. I cut the "lid" piece about an inch wider all the way around (8"). Then cut out a square at each corner, and place it on top of the cake and pinch the corners together and dabbed with water to secure (and tried to hide seams). I used my angled spatula to straighten out any crooked parts of the lid after it was on the cake.
Good Luck and remember to post picture!!!!!
