I have looked in the galleries at the lovely gift box cakes. I am dying to try one. I love the ones that look like the top is open on the box with the tissue paper in it. Could someone please give me some instructions on how to do this? What size cake works best? Is the lid also cake? What do you do to make the lid look like it is open? Sorry for all of the questions. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I haven't done one yet, but I think alot of them may be gumpaste. Alternatively, you could use a single layer of cake on it's own board the same size and prop up with dowels. The fondant tissue paper will hide the dowel. I would probably do gumpaste, I'd be too afraid of slippage during transport.

I just made one last night for my mother in laws b-day sunday (look in my photos) Mine is all edible except for the ribbon. It is filled with cakeballs but you can put anything in it. I made a square cake tappered the top. Frosted it, then melted chocolate on wax paper (i also used a transfer sheet to get it to say happr birthday) Trim the chocolate before it hardens completely, because it might crack. Or I used a homemade template out of cardboard wrapped with wax paper. Stick the chocolate sides on with the frosting for glue. after all sides are on pipe over the seams. Roll out a piece of fondant for tissue paper. Place inside make sure your frosting crusts alittle or it will smudge. put in your candy or whatever. Place the chocolate top on with frosting. Make a gift card out of fondant and let it dry to stiffen up.(you might want to do this first) You can write on it with royal icing but I used edible markers.
I hope this helps you.
