Hi everyone icon_smile.gif I am doing a hat box cake this weekend and I have a question about the lid. I want to do one where the lid is "on" the cake (like picture below), not sticking up with the tissue. I was going to cover the cake in fondant and make the lid out of fondant as well. I am worried about where the top of the lid and the sides of the lid come together - that seam.

Any tips for making the lid? Thanks for all your help!! icon_biggrin.gif

You can dampen your finger with water and work the seam out. If you do this you will need to use petal or luster dust on the lid so you won't see where you used water. That is the only way I know to make the seam completely disapear.

could you pipe a small seam of royal icing with a #1 tip? it would disguise the seam

what about mixing gumpaste and fondant together 50/50 mix for the lid.....making it dry harder and then litterally forming it over top of an object to get that form...so that the top and sides of the lid are all ONE piece (no seams) then you could simply lay it on top of the cake ( I would make the top slightly larger than the top of the cake...the same way a hat box lid would REALLY be) and then when you go to cut and serve the cake they could remove the "lid" and give it to the kids to munch on lol
