About BritAbroad
My Mum used to make us cakes when we were kids so I guess I inherited my love for it from her. My first attempt at a cake was my oldest daughter's 2nd birthday cake - it was the "Tweenie Clock" from the [then] popular UK kids TV series. I now have 4 kids (3 girls and a boy) and have gone through practically every Disney Princess and have now (with teens) moved onto make-up, jewelry and all sorts of other subjects. We moved to the USA in 2004 and I gave up work. With extra time on my hands with [then] 2 kids in school I started making cakes for friends. Many people tell me I should make a business out of it but Maryland is not friendly to home-based 'cottage' food enterprises so I satisfy myself making cakes for the kids, their friends for 'big' or milestone birthdays and my friends as gifts or for their families. I have come a long way since that first Tweenie cake and love to see what I can achieve. I pride myself on most, if not all, of the cake being edible - I don't go in for huge amounts of internal structure and, of course, it has to taste good. My youngest daughter once said to me after a visit to Carlo's Bakery in Hoboken, NJ (home of TLCs "Cake Boss") "Mummy, living with you is like living with Cake Boss ... only your cakes taste WAY better!"
