Rocker Girl Birthday Cake
A cool rocker-girl themed birthday cake. Cake is an 8" on a 10", which is covered in buttercream with buttercream decoration. Only the heart on the top tier and the stars around the bottom of the base tier are fondant, and even those cut-outs were covered with buttercream in order that they matched the cake colors. The silver dragees on the wings, heart, and borders were added at the request of the customer with the warning that they were listed by FDA as non-edible. The feather topper was purchased by the customer and added once the cake was finished.

Fun 60's-Theme Birthday Blast
This topsy-turvy cake is covered in fondant. The tie-dye design on the bottom tier is hand-painted on with a thinned mixture of royal icing and food coloring, and then the tier is sprinkled with crushed edible glitter. The top tier has peace-sign fondant cut-outs that were also pressed in edible glitter before application. The belts at the bottom of each tier are strips of fondant with hand-formed studs attached and painted with a mixture of vanilla extract and silver dust. The gum-paste belt buckles were also painted in the silver mixture once they dried firm, and non-edible rhinestones were attached to them at the request of the client (and with client acknowledgment that buckles cannot be eaten). Client had the topper flown in from a company in Europe, and the cake colors were made to match it.

Outer Space Solar System
Base cake is buttercream covered with fondant star/spaceship cutouts. Bottom boarder is silver florist wire wrapped around a dowel to give it that spring look. Since client did not want to have/eat rice crispie sun/planets, we opted for syrofoam balls to make a very light-weighing solar system. Sun is a large styro ball covered in spatula strokes of different colors of buttercream. Planets are supported with black dowels and covered in fondant. Saturn has a styrofoam-board ring that was cut, fondant-covered, and attached to planet, and Uranus has more silver florist wire encircling it for a light ring. Planets were then hand-painted with details and colors to give a realistic look.

Royal Purple Wedding
Three tiers are covered in fondant. The top and bottom tiers have the center pattern stenciled onto the fondant with thinned purple royal icing. Normal-consistency royal icing was then used to pipe the scroll work above and below the stencil, as well as the pearl borders of each tier. The center tier was gently covered with thinned pipping gel and Wilton's Sparkling Sugar for a crystalized look. Silk flowers topped the cake for a bit more purple color.

Garden Gazebo Wedding Cake
This is a garden-themed cake with an old-school, vintage look. The cakes are covered in green fondant and then decorated with white royal icing borders, background ivy piping, and scroll hearts. Then hundreds of brightly-colored fondant/gum paste flowers and white roses fill the "garden" tiers. The topper is a bride/groom on a garden sweetheart bench. The top tier is raised with a gazebo separator with a Wilton birdbath cake decoration inside. The whole cake is lifted with a pillar separator set. The working fountain and cherub statues are from Wilton. The small flower pots around the fountain's edge are handmade.

Golden Square Modern Art
Just a contemporary design inspired by modern art. Cakes are fondant covered and slightly angled on top of each other. Random black lines are piped on in black royal icing, and black ribbon encircles the base of each tier. Cascading squares are a mix of fondant and gum paste, which are dried until stiff. Some are adhered directly on sides of the cake, and some are attached to skewers and placed on cake edges and hanging out of cake sides for a 3-D effect.

Elegant Gold And Ivory
The tiers were round cakes with each layer baked to 2.5 inches, so each tier was 5 inches tall. With a knife, I hand-carved the top edge at an angle to give it a beveled shape. The cake is covered in buttercream with buttercream borders. The assortment of little gold flowers were a mix of fondant and gumpaste with each type of flower hand-painted with a mix of vanilla extract and gold shimmer dust in a pattern to give variety. The flowers were placed on the cake with dots of buttercream.

Little Pet Shop Birthday Cake
The mother of a little girl had a picture of a cake she found online ( http://cherylshuen.com/blog/blog4.php?s=pet+shop&sentence=AND&submit=Search ) that her daughter wanted. Using that photo as inspiration, I changed and tweaked the design to something a little different but similar. Balloons are plastic store-bought decorations. The balls at the border base are gum balls. Cake is covered in buttercream. The top lollipop, ice cream, and all butterflies are gum paste, while all the other decor is marshmallow fondant. The "Little Pet Shop" figurines/accessories are toys provided by the mother.

Beach Wedding Cake
Family member's son was getting married locally on the beach. His bride-to-be gave me the wedding colors (the tan and blue seen in the pic) and said she like seashells and square cakes, so this was the design that I created for them. Luckily, it was a hit! The shells are all white chocolate, the sand is crushed graham crackers, and the cake is fondant-covered with fondant "waves" (blue) and "sand dunes" (tan).

Mother Goose Rhymes Baby Shower
A friend had a baby shower invitation that had cute little line drawings of a few Mother Goose rhyme characters, and she wanted a cake that had those characters on it in the same color tones as the invitation. I enlarged the line drawings on a copier and used them as templates to cut out the characters from fondant, as well as the 3D skirt/legs of the woman on the bottom tier. The cow/moon was a gum paste silhouette cutout that was dried and then adhered to a dowel with a little melted chocolate. The character image was cut out of pieces of fondant and adhered to the gum paste silhouette. The book was made this way, too, and had a skewer adhered to it with chocolate, so it would hold its placeon the side of the cake. The banner was gum paste, so that it would dry in that shape.

Teapot Cake Featuring Disney's Belle And Aurora
Mother was holding a tea-party themed birthday celebration for her daughter. Among the finger foods and tiny sandwiches, she wanted a birthday cake in the shape of a teapot that featured the images of her daughter's two favorite Disney princesses: Belle and Aurora. The cake was baked in a Pampered Chef glass "batter bowl". It was then turned upside-down, so it was narrow at the top and wide at the bottom when on the cake board. The bottom was trimmed inwards to give a rounded base. Since the small cake would not be able to hold the weight of a purely fondant spout/handle, the spout and handle seen were carved out of styrofoam and covered with a thin layer of fondant. Thin wooden shiskabob skewers were measured were an inch or so was pushed into the spout/handle, and the remaining part of the skewer was positioned and pressed into the cake for each. The teapot lid and ribbon roses are fondant, and the princess pictures were buttercream transfers from line drawings.

Ahoy, It's A Boy! Baby Shower
Mom-to-be's event planner asked for help with a baby shower cake that would have a nautical theme. The phrase, "Ahoy, It's A Boy!" was in the decorations and needed to be incorporated in the cake design. The cake itself is blue buttercream with white buttercream borders and lettering. To get straight/solid shapes, the lifesavers and the backing to the sailboat topper were cut from gum paste and dried hard. Colored fondant was then cut and adhered to them for decoration. The rest of the cake decoration is also colored fondant. The banner was a mix of gum paste and fondant that was dried, so it would hold shape standing up.
