Exactly. And I didn't have two years to spare, to learn how to pipe good roses, or even two weeks to learn how to pipe bad roses, so I went with alternatives that were supposed to be flat.

Which is to say that right now, if I were to attempt to pipe a rose, my best effort would probably not be good enough to meet most cake decorators' definition of a bad rose.

That's why I don't like that swirl job everybody's calling roses.  It reminds me of the days when you took Wilton Beginners Class and you couldn't pipe a rose to save your life, so the instructor wanting to get thru to the next technique shows you how to swirl the thing and says.. Oh that looks great, Ha!  One of us is a dummy and my momma didn't raise no dummy.  rofl

Here are my two. The first one looked bad and it cracked so I was not to happy with it. *

The Santa I made for Christmas. I realized I needed to make a cake for Christmas and I had to hurry so the details are really bad .... i ended up doing it like the night before. I was scared to cover the dome in fondant so I mixed raspberry jam with store bought icing.... I made the arms and legs WAYYYYYY to big. and the icing melted. My dad actually started laughing when the head rolled off (to heavy and so not enough support). He said "that's what happens when you drink and sled" lol it was actually funny and I don't mind laughing at my self lol*

AI wish I would've taken a picture of my parents 40th anniversary cake. It was awful! A one layer 14" round, split & filled with straight raspberry jam - no buttercream. Then there were pillars to hold up the 8" round two layer. I ordered a flower topper for it, and it was not iced very well. Maybe I didn't take a picture because somehow I just knew I wouldn't want to remember it!

I just about spit y coffee out reading this and then seeing the picture. We all learn right, everyone has to start somewhere. And the best way to learn is by making mistakes! Bet you know how to support a head now:P

The cake with yellow roses is AFTER I learned from a Wilton class :)  I got a certificate even though  failed roses.

AOh I wish I'd had a camera back in my Navy days! I once decorated a cake with chocolate chips. Even used them to spell "Happy Birthday!"

Hmmm now that I think about it, I'm glad no one had a camera!

JWinslow, I'm sorry, I'm not criticizing your work. I hate swirl roses, I don't think they look pretty.  I don't even do them on cupcakes.  But that's just me.  I see everybody loves them.  And if a customer came and asked for them, I'm from the ole school where the customer can get what they want.  Well, as long as they pay for it, rofl..

Karina, it took me all of 5 minutes to stop laughing.  And I actually feel better.  I've been having such a hard time today with my cake.  I'm about ready to post it and give it  my Ugly Cake of the Year award.

No apologies - I think you misunderstood me.  I was agreeing with you by trying to make the point that even after a class the best I could do was squished roses.  The very trending swirling roses reminds me of my class ones - lol

My first attempts at cake decorating were so traumatizing that I didn't try to decorate a cake again for

2 years.

I didn't know about Cake Central back in 2010 and so all I did was google a marshmallow fondant recipe, bought a some gumpaste mix and just decided to wing it. It couldn't be that hard right, I mean it looks so easy on Cake Challenge and Ace of Cakes. XD

So my first attempt was in 2010 for my daughter's tea party themed birthday:

I didn't let the gumpaste spout and handle dry well enough before stabbing them into the cake with toothpicks and it became misshapen and kept falling off. The fondant kept tearing and bulging oddly. I didn't wait for the fondant to dry before I tried painting it with these horrible flowers (pink and purple seems like it would blend pleasantly together, right? Well, no.) I should have practiced painting with food coloring before hand because I started painting cake for the first time ever 10 minutes before the party and it looked terrible.

In 2011 for my son's birthday I tried to make a castle cake and I got as far as trying to cover it with fondant and and gave up, threw it out, and went to walmart for the cake.

Cake Central is the best thing ever. My first couple of days here I was able to identify every mistake I made and I'm not as terrified of failure as I was before, haha. icon_biggrin.gif
My first cake since this disaster actually came out pretty good and I'm attempting petit fours for the Fourth of July. <3

Really? Every time I look at it I cringe.
It was such a nightmare when I was making it too, I think I was in a panic the entire time--nothing went smoothly!

Oh my gosh! I can't stop laughing! They have no necks! And their torsos are so thick. They kind of look like cave women! I'm so sorry, jonahsmom. My figures aren't great either! I hope I'm laughing with you and not at you!! Keep trying! (as will I)

I made this cake for the 2009 Daytona 500.  My first fondant cake.  My first gumpaste figures.  The gasman is superglued and held together with a rubberband.  This is suppose to be Dale Earnharts car.  Everything fought me right til the end.  Everybody thought it was a centerpiece so it did not even get eaten.

When I finally stopped laughing I remembered another cake I was not so proud of.  Lets just say carved cakes have not been easy for me to learn.
