Scarlet Macaws - Mayan Paradise

A dummy cake made for the state fair. One of my first sculptures, macaws made from gum paste with a wire armature, first time for birds of paradise, lilies and orchids. The tier are decorated with had made base relief and painting.

I can't even wrap my mind around this picture!  The quality of this work is truly astonishing.  I can only aspire to build up to your league, in a few years!  I wouldn't even know how to start a project like this...wire armature????  Are you a trained cake decorator or self taught?

Thank you for such kind words, @LynneCakes ‍!  I was a Fine Arts major in college and I've been drawing and painting all of my life.  Sugar art is my first attempt at sculpting and I like it.  Yep, self-taught, unless you count watching a million YouTube tutorials and asking a million questions of the fabulous folks in the cake community.

I watched a bunch of videos on sculpting with clay before I started making figures.  It is easy to adapt them to modeling chocolate.  This was my first model with a wire armature and it was horrible.  This is the one I would like to do over some day.

Wow well I think your idea of "horrible" vastly differs from the majority of us here!  I can only dream of having that level of talent.  Thank you for sharing your background.  Yes, videos and this community are invaluable!  Oh and I go by "Lynne" ;)  I work as a Biologist at the Living with Lakes Centre in Sudbury Ontario Canada.  We have "in house" students working towards Masters and PhDs.  They are the ones who nicknamed my cakes "Lynne Cake".  That gets yelled out and the stampede to the kitchen begins.  Sigh....

LOL, how fun!  I know that stampede makes you proud.  Those cakes must be as yummy as they are cute!  My sister's name is Lynn, without the e, so one of my favorite names :o)

The final results on the birds wasn't too bad.  It was the wire armature to which I referred.  It was all wrong and my wire was not heavy enough.  My birds, especially the one with his wings spread, kept wanting to flop over.  The whole thing would be so easy to structure, now that I know where to start, haha!  Experience is a wonderful thing.

What artwork! My mind is not comprehending that this is all made out of sugar! (I feel lucky when I can get my gum paste into a ball without a crack LOLOL) You are so incredibly talented!!

You are so kind, dear lukbeealady!  Thank you!  Don't underestimate the talent involved in rolling gum paste into a ball without a crack!  It is a whole lot easier than videos make it look!
