Whimsy Cake For 16Th Birthday

Whimsy Cake For 16Th Birthday on Cake Central

The party theme was Alice in Wonderland. This was my first attempt at a whimsy cake. It is all buttercream with fondant and royal accents. It was challenging but a lot of fun to do. Now I know I can do it and I'll charge a heck of a lot more next time!!

Cute! I just got "Cakes To Dream On" by Collette Peters for my birthday and am scheming to make my first one of these! Was it hard to attach the fondant to the buttercream????? I'll use fondant on fondant I think.

The initial is royal icing applied over a wooden coffee stirrer; I left enough of the stick bare to stick into the cake. I thought if I didn't use the stick, the buttercream would break down the royal and it would break off. I'm sure there's a more professional way to do it but this is what my un-professional brain came up with

LOL...I'm such a lazy cake maker that I didn't use the "well" or "hollow-out" method..I just dowel stacked them. If you look closely the top of each tier is flat and that's why this method worked. For each tier I used a smaller cake on the bottomand a larger one on the top (some slight trimming was needed (cake should be chilled for easier trimming)), only the top tier was sliced at an angle but again, the bottom of that tier was flat and flush with the tier beneath it. Now was that clear as mud ...
