I've never tried to decorate an ice cream cake before... And this posed HUGE problems, especially considering my house was particularly warm that day. Just frosting the cake alone and getting it smooth was a problem. I wound up covering the frosting with colored sugar and the figures are printed on rice paper and attached to hardened fondant.
