This was my cake for OSSAS 2005. All the pink draping on the cake is Fondant. The Fabric starts under all four tiers. So at the base of my cake. I was very happy that the fabric matched in the day but at night you could see a variation! The flower took me ten hours to comeplete.
The flower is extruded through a clay gun--The ten hours. Each strand of fondant is layed one on top of a another to get the look of embroidery. The leaves are extruded fondant too!
I love this cake, and it was so funny. The day after I saw your cake on this site, the Food Network aired the same competition on the tv. So the whole time I kept yelling out to my husband "See, that one right there!!" Oh, and I think you did a great job matching your fondant to the fabric. Looks good, until I read your whole caption, I assumed it was all fondant!!
I am honestly amazed by this! Your cake is incredible. I would love for you to explain to me the clay gun technique if you ever have the chance. I'm sure it might take a lot of explanation in my case :) But your colors of fabric match so well with your fondant. I love it!
I am actually doing a photo tutorial for Amercan Cakde decorating Magazine. It is hard to explain and this technique is very time consuming. PM me and I will forward what I wrote for others.
I have only joined this site in the last ten minutes and this is cake has made me do a double take! I have had to look VERY closely to see where the fabric ends and the fondant begins. WOW!
The cake is just beautiful. I remember seeing this one in the competition I watched on Food Network. I watch them every chance I get. I was amazed when I saw this the first time, and I'm still amazed when I found it here just now.
