that seems like the going rate for classes.

i take classes with Klara Johnson from Canada and they used to be pricey.

Unfortunately she hasnt been to Ja in a while. not sure what they would cost now.

Absolutely. In a heartbeat. Without a second thought.

If I had the $, I would be taking classes from many an expensive teacher.

Thanks guys, Im trying to convince myself that its not that much money in the grand scheme of things.

The class is at Caljava http://caljavaonline.com/classes1.htm for anyone else interested. They have an out of state package that includes room & board or something like that. Luckily I live maybe an hour away from the location.... now to convince my boss I need 3 days vacation icon_biggrin.gif

When I saw that last year I paid for in full ($895) to get in her class. I love her cakes and have been told she is very nice and fun. You live close by so that is good but even for the price I am paying I am getting four night at hotel, they pick me and the guests up and give you meals. So I am fine with that.

Do it, you will not reget it.

OMG - Did you see her wedding cake last night on the Wedding Cake-off Challenge?! Well, she won the championship, and its no wonder. She is AMAZING!!!! If I could afford the class price and the plane fare, I would do it in a heartbeat or less. Go for it. Its an opportunity you can't afford to miss, and you may kick yourself in the future if you don't do it while you can. Lucky You!

Well, you could easily pay $645.00 for a Bronwen Weber cake - cake for a day icon_smile.gif

You could pay $645.00 for the class - Bronwen Weber style cakes for the rest of your life icon_biggrin.gif

I know I always have a hard time justifying money I spend on "myself". Why is this?

You know if a friend asked if she/he should take this class - you would tell them, "Hell yeah".

....am in total agreement with what has been said, and also just what ShirleyW said thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

Since you are a professional pastry chef, you should be able to deduct the training from your taxes. Check with your accountant and see how much it would actually cost you after deductions. That might make the price tag a bit more palatable.

That doesn't sound bad to me. I'm signed up for a Colette Peters 1 day class in a town near me and it's $350.00. Actually, it's $250 and we're all chipping in an extra $100 apiece to cover her travels. It's a small class of 14-15 people only. Bronwen'c class would be awesome from what I saw of her work and personality on the wedding cake event she won on the Food Channel this week. Go for it! I am looking forward to Colette though!!

Let me get this straight....she's making upwards of $3500 for a few hours and you're paying for her travel expenses? Is this normally how it is? icon_confused.gif

All I can say is WOW.

The way you really make money with any cake is by teaching and writing books. Not by selling cake. icon_biggrin.gif Same as many professions, get them on the public speaking circuit and you got it made and can command the big bucks anywhere from $25,000 and up depending on the product. It is not on heard of to get $150,000 for a keynote speech and a smaller class at a convention. Just think what the cake experts are bringing in at OSSAS.....makes ya say Hmmmmmmm.

I wish I could go to one but no instructor ever comes out here. I could see if they ever go to Toronto since I am originally from there and would have a place to stay for free but would have to pay air fare. Try convincing my husband that I would like to go to a conference for $650 and then pay my air fare and what not. Maybe we should start a thread on ways to convince our husbands why we need to go and pay the money!!!!

Right...so she can't afford to pay for her airline ticket? I can guess what they're pulling in....I just found it shocking that the students are "chipping in" for her to get there. I would prefer being told the tuition was $350 and just not knowing that I was paying for her expenses. I'm sorry...I've always adored Colette...this just rubbed me the wrong way.

The Colette Peters class is over $800 at the place where I will be taking Bronwen Webers class. Im already hard pressed at $645, $800+ I would have to do some serious convincing on myself to pay that much.

Nicholas Lodge is coming to Cambridge On (not far from Toronto) in May...I have signed up for his gumpaste class and there are still a few spots left..he is also teaching African Hat box or something like that too... at Klara Johnson school in Cambridge.

I, too, have a similar debate. I put my name on a waiting list for one of Nick Lodge's fondant classes and got a call today that there was a cancellation. I have until tomorrow to snag it. The cost is $350, but with airfare, hotel, airport transportation, etc., it will end up costing approximately $1,000. At this rate, it may be cheaper to just enroll at the local 'hot' cooking school and become a pastry chef. I figure that 20 classes at $1,000 each would equal the $20,000 tuition!! (ok, so I'm dreaming here, but think about).

I am a long time baker but new to the 'decorating scene' so I am not really sure if this is a wise investment or not. Yesterday I got the last seat for an upcoming Colette class at a local cake show. It's a 3 hour class for $50 and it's only 20 minutes away. There will only be 15 students in that class - topic yet to be announced. For the price and convenience, I figured, who cares what the topic is? It's Colette!

I have to decide on the Nick Lodge class by tomorrow morning. What to do????

Bronwen, Toba and Collett are my absolute favorite decorators. Tobe charges over $800 for one of her classes. If you ask me it's a steal and if I had the money I'd SOOOO go for it. Lucky ducky! thumbs_up.gif
