Honestly, i have greatly appreciated the comments I have been given on this site. Your family will tell you anything sometimes to shut you up! icon_razz.gif Here a positive comment from a complete stranger can mean a lot, or even corrective criticism!

I am not a professional by any means, but I do try to make cakes on the side to provide myself and my son with "mad money" to do extra things we want! I take the comments made here very seriously because I do want to know if my work is good enough to try and pursue customers or not. I also try and be very honest about the comments I make towards others on this site.

I think some of us have personalities about us that needs that little bit of kind words, criticism to make us who we are...is that a good thing or a bad thing? Who knows! Don't know if that makes sense or not, but that's my 5 cents worth!
Happy Icing! icon_smile.gif

Me again...
after I posted, I went in to see the most recent posts, and when I clicked on a cake to view it...said "Members Only...please join!"

I'm logged on (obviously, or I couldn't be sending this post)...what's wrong?

icon_smile.gif AMEN...
I agree..no comment does not really mean the cake is "bad" or horrid....
I don't feel that way when no one makes a wonderful comment about my cakes. I think it's better that way than someone giving a very
awful comment. Don't feel bad.. We all started as beginners. When I look back now, I tell myself, "Did I really do that?" , when I compare with what I can do now. just keep doing it..We all get better and better if we keep practicing and have an open mind about learning more.

Twindees, your apology is appreciated and reciprocated.

I am glad people are speaking up on both sides, nonetheless, and all of your input is helpful to shed light.

Well no that everyone has finish putting in their pennies.... Time for me to add my dollar to the soapbox meter.

I personally do not comment on a lot of cakes here because I find it so difficult to keep up with the amount of pics that are uploaded. I log on and I read the forums. If I have time them I might browse the pic gallery. However, if a pic is posted in the forum I comment on it. It's not me being too lazy to go and look at the Gallery and comment but between what's going on in my life, then trying to keep up with about 3 cake sites etc there's not always enough time to be able to browse and comment. Then just commenting on one or two cakes in the gallery makes other people feel slighted.

I think the best way to possibly get a comment on your cake is to maybe place a pic directly in the forum or at least a link to the pic in the cake gallery. If folks want to then comment it's their perogative.

Okies, I think I am gonna get off my soapbox now... The dollar I put in the soapbox meter is about to run out.

Princess - I agree with you...sometimes if I want a specific response to one of my cakes or desserts I post it in the forum or mention it in the post and ask for critiques.

There are some of my pictures that have never been commented on, I don't really post them for that reason. I post them because I think people should have different points of reference when looking at the cake. Also, if I know alot of people are going to see it, it gives me that much more incentive to make it nice. Part of the reason I like this site so much is because there are all different levels of decorators. I am guilty of looking a cake and thinking "that is so gorgeous", but I don't post anything. If I posted everytime I thought a cake was nice, I would never get anything else done. icon_lol.gif

I guess what I'm trying to say is try not to take it personal if your cake gets no comments...just post it in the forum and ask for opinions! You will receive them icon_biggrin.gif

While I don't post my pictures to get comments on them, I do appreciate them-even if it says good job it means someone took the time to be nice.
Maybe if I commented on EVERY cake posted, and no one commented on mine I would be upset.
Most comments I've seen are either praising the picture or asking how to do something. Unless the person asks for help in improving the cake, I don't see many people offering advice on how to make the cake better.
I think the more pictures posted the better-even if the cake isn't perfect I get ideas from it. I think that's what posting the pictures is about-giving each other ideas for future cakes.

Well, I don't go to the galleries unless someone posts that they have just added a picture to the galleries and are asking for comments. If someone posts a picture in the General Forum or one of the forums, I comment. Not to be mean at all, but there are so many pictures added to the galleries on any given day, I just find that I would spend all day going through them. However if I do go through, I comment on any I look at because I realize that a lot of folks feel bad when no comments are made and they can see that many people have viewed their cakes.
And to whomever felt bad that there were no comments made, well, I have posted pictures on the General Forum and sent pictures in emails and no comments were made. I don't think people ignore the pictures deliberately, I think they get caught up in other things. This isn't something that offends me at all, but I can understand someone that is looking for encouragement, feeling this way.
I think we have to be very careful in our comments. Some people are extremely fragile and cannot handle constructive or any other kind of criticism. That has been proven time and time again. Some people need to be more honest in asking for what they are looking for. If they can handle helpful hints but really cannot handle any form of critiquing, they need to say so. So I think that we need to have a feel for which type of personality we are dealing with before we open out mouths.
As far as not being able to find anything positive to say, I find that hard to believe. I have not seen one cake yet where there wasn't something positive to say about the placement, the colour, the style, the smoothness of the icing, the creativity of the design, the writing, something...
I think that this thread serves as a good reminder to all of us. If we are looking for comments, please post where and when you put a cake in the galleries so people can find the pictures to comment on.
If you are looking for help for things like getting your borders to appear more straight, how to make your icing appear more smooth, how to do a better job of your roses and such, please ask when you post your pictures so people will know what is safe to comment on without offending you. Get to know the styles of the people that comment too, how they word their comments, so you will not take offense. And don't ask for critiques if you really cannot handle them, it only upsets you and whomever comments.
There is nothing wrong with people posting pictures of their cakes with the hopes of receiving some encouragement. Sometimes they are just plain happy with the results and want to show others. I don't think that is childish or that it shows a lack of confidence or a big ego or anything like that. They are just sharing their joy at completing a project that they are reasonably happy with.
Haha, and I challenge every last one of you to post what you felt was a perfect cake you have made. Because I know there would not be one single picture posted. Cake decorators have that in common, we may well see other people's cakes a perfect, but when we look at our own, we will see some perceived small fault. Whether the border is a bit off, or the icing isn't smooth enough, or our writing could be better or our roses are not perfect, whatever. We look at our work and there is always something that could have been improved upon. I think that is what makes us better, always striving for perfection in our own work.
Anyway, that is just my two cents Canadian, which, as you know, is only worth about 1.5 cents American!

Just wanted to throw in my .02 cents. I always try to post comments because I know how much I appreciate comments myself and I love to be able to give someone encourgement especially if they are just starting out.

I do use the last upload feature but only click on that once a day and don't usually have enough time to comment on more than 10 photos.

I wish there was a way to pull up photos with no comments because I would go and comment on those first. Is there a way to search for photos with no comments? Or at least to put the number of comments each photo has so I can find them when I do the recent upload search?

I'm going to add an extra item here along with my penny's worth-
I try to post comments as often as possible, a nice comment is always worth reading. And I appreciate any comments on my cakes and try to respond with a thank you....

There are times though when asked for some type of feedback with other suggestions, either design or other aspect of the cake, and I offer a mine, it's like I've been branded the "bad person" for responding as I did. I don't feel I've been negative at all. I am by no means a professional at this, I just give my honest opinions or suggestions. It does make one feel that maybe saying something wasn't the right thing to do so therefore not to say anything at all.

Good point of sending a pm to the decorator instead putting it in the forum for all to read.

I have truly enjoyed this web site, learned a great deal from all of you, received wonderful support and met some outstanding people and some have become friends to me.

Jscakes, I have followed your posts for a long time. I have yet to see you ever make any comment that could be deemed offensive. So I do not understand why anyone would want to make you feel like, "the bad person".

I try to leave as many Good jobs as I can. There have been several times I have posted a cake and no one has commented. It's not a great feeling. Even if it is just Good job.... that means something. I know you can not possibly comment on every photo, but I disagree with those that think "being nice" is a bad thing. I think those that give helpful pointers are great too. I think most of us post our pictures for SOME kind of feedback. It helps us feel more confident in what we are doing. I love this site... and there are some really "NICE" people on here. There is nothing wrong with saying " Hey... Good job!"
OK my 2 cents!!!!

I have many cake pictures that have not been commented on. I think it is becuase they get posted at a busy time and just get bumped. Speaking from how I use the board, I will rarely just go to the gallery. I will be more likely to comment on something I see on the main page. I would not take offense if no one comments, it does not mean that they do not like your work, it probably means they just didnt see it...

The reason I rarely comment on photos is because although I'm here many times throughout the day, I don't usually have much time until I'm found out and returned to the play room. I will comment on something that catches my eye on the homepage, but rarely anything else.

So I just finished scrolling through the first page of recent uploads but still did the same thing - looked at the ones that caught my eye and commented, but still can't comment on all of them. Just not enough hours in the day!

I've also had photos with no comments or very few. I don't take it as a personal slight, just bad timing. I'm usually posting my photos when everybody else does so they don't stay on top very long.

Haha, yes, you do on another site, where they all call me Ma or Mama at some point in time. So I make the connection when the Mama is there.

Not sure if you were in this thread when this happened or elsewhere as there doesn't appear to be any posts by Sugar Creations here. But when this happens, send an email to Jackie or one of the moderators. You can just hit Administrator or any of the moderator names and tell them what happened.

For the first week after signing up for CC, I didn't realize that the home page has a little section that has the new photos...The photos DO get lost in the shuffle because the home page only has room for 3-4 at a time. It would take us every hour or so to ensure photos are looked at in a timely manner depending on the posting of photos.
I've learned to just check every now and then when I get a chance. However, there are so many photos and I comment on those that grasp my attention instantaneously. I do try to make a little comment on those who make their first attempt cakes/creations. But again, that's if I catch it on time. I usually end up seeing a photo by chance.
Sorry to hear about your friend but please tell her that everyone's cakes are appreciated.

Hey, hey, hey, now, everyone.... I haven't sent my buddy Tony from the Youngstown Mafia after anyone for not posting comments on the photos (yet icon_wink.gif ).

Many of us are citizens of a free government and have a right to speak or not to speak about our opinions.

I can't comment on all of the photos, and no one expects anyone to do so. You would seriously not have a life if that were the case.

Veejaytx, you are excellent about recognizing other people's cakes and your input is always appreciated. In fact, I always see posts from you in the forums and galleries....You are 100% right; you don't need a reminder.

My biggest point is: IF one has time, IF one can find something nice to say about a cakeor offer an encouraging word, IF it doesn't question your integrity or honesty to do so, please drop a line. It is so much appreciated.

I have really enjoyed the site and am very glad to be a member.
