Red And Black Plaid  how do I achieve this red and black plaid?  Can I do it in buttercream?

Appears to be airbrushed.  Yes you can airbrush buttercream....but it does better on a crusting buttercream than it does on a meringue/non-crusting type.

I agree - it is red b'cream overall then black airbrushed over.

Any suggestions of another way I could achieve this?  I don't have the equipment for air brushing

You could hand paint it.  Mix vodka and black food color powder and paint the stripes.  Bonus if it's a bit transparent as the plaid would really stand out where the stripes meet.

Could I use paste food colour thinned with liquid flavouring?  I love this site  it is so helpful

I used Wilton gel food colouring diluted with white vanilla flavouring and painted the black plaid onto red fondant.  I was quite happy with the outcome.
