How do you create the teddy bear's fur? Is that fondant using an extruder?? Piping?? TIA

Teddy Bear in a gift box cake by Paul Bradford. Just love this. It's so perfectly presented and the colours go so well together. I could just pick that bear up and cuddle it!:

Per the cake artist, Leslea Matsis, the fur is gumpaste cut with scissors.

I really don't want to argue especially with the cake artist but I don't see how that can be done in fondant using scissors.  A somewhat stiff b'cream can produce that look nicely.

Thank you all for your responses. My piped fur does not look like the pic, so I thought it was some other method.

I confess that I don't have the patience to cut gum paste with a scissors. I'm thinking won't it be hard to cut the cake because of the gum paste?

I saw a video tutorial of a bear similar to this, but white. She did it in fondant, with scissors as well. Gumpaste would harden, fondant will stay softer. I'll send you the link.

Definitely strips of fondant. Took way longer than I thought, but in my opinion looked better than buttercream

I'm not sure if I have the time for it, I'm making the entire Bear ( Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See) for GD 2nd B day and I'm finishing up the " Moving UP" cakes for the oldest GD. When did we start doing graduations for Pre-K & Kindergarten? oye....

Maybe I could shrink him.......mini bear......lol

Ok, @cara1982 ‍ , I'm semi-obsessed with this cake now. What were the dimensions of your box, about 6 inches? And was the propped up lid gumpaste? And the bear...cake or RKT?  I may try to recreate this for a shower for my soon-to-arrive niece.  One thing is for shore, my bear will have ghetto piped fur, not deluxe hand-cut fur!

And @carolinecakes ‍, you might need to say "no more grandkids" or you'll never sit down from caking!

Now that I think about it, though, @carolinecakes ‍ , isn't Brown Bear, Brown Bear an Eric Carle book? As in flat and streaky, not cuddly and furry?

It's short strips of fondant cut with scissors, rolled up and attached. I had to make this cake for a client. And that's how I made it. It takes a VERY LONG TIME though >_< @carolinecakes ‍

Cara & Fatima you guys amaze me, you have definitely raised the bar. Thank you for your input. If I don,t use this method for the 3D bear, I will use it on a cake topper. Now I just have to convince someone that they need one for their cake. lol

TwoThumbs2 The book was a gift set that came with a bear, he looks just like the picture in the book. I am making a 3D Bear, because its her favorite, she sleeps with the  bear.

Yes the grand kids keep me busy, truthfully, I wouldn't have it any other way.
