Weight Loss Help...with The Chunky Monkeys!
Lounge By TexasSugar Updated 28 Oct 2011 , 1:50pm by TexasSugar
I have a friend that was in therapy, which can get interesting since when we would be talking she'd ask me the "why do you think that is' question. But I trust her so we could talk about anything.
I think for me it helps to come here and have people that go through the same struggles and understand that it isn't easy. There is so much more going on then just weight coming off. There is how you see yourself, how other see you, how to deal with comments others make and how to deal with those in your life that don't quite understand.
With the first 25lbs I had my parents pointing out to me where I was loosing weight. "Oh you don't have as much back fat now" and such, which makes you go, gee what in the hell did you think about me before? And you get all the "wow you are looking greats" which makes you go, yeah it wasn't as unnoticable as I always thought it was.
And with the first weight loss I could stand in front of the mirror and just couldn't see it. I knew in my head I had lost weight, I knew the scale said I did, I knew my pants were starting to fall off, but standing there I just could not see it.
Not to mention being in the dating world, back at that time I was seeing this guy that kept telling me I looked good the way I was. And I know in his eyes I did, and I know he didn't mean it in a bad way. But I also knew he was into heavier women, and I knew that he would end up dragging me down, I'd relax my guard and stay at that weight if not gain more. What annoyed me most about him was that he was a heavy guy before and has lost over 100lbs and yet he was encouraging me not to lose any weight. Maybe he was afrad of me losing weight, who knows. I ended up ending it because it wasn't healthy for me and it wasn't want I wanted.
I've always had my friend to talk to, and try to make sense of things with. She isn't heavy, but I've learned from her that everyone has body image problems. She was actually a toothpick in HS and after two kids has gained a little weight, but is healthy and 5'11 so the weight is very spread out. And she knows me inside and out so I could tell her anything and not worry about how she would see me.
97% of the people out there just can not understand what all goes on during weight loss, especially big weight loss, if they have never experinced it. It is so much more than just those numbers on the scale. This is why I'm starting to not like the Biggest Loser that is all about losing big amounts of weight fast, and I just can't see how healthy that is mentally and physically. I'd really love to see the behind the scenes from the show to see what these people are really eating on it.
As far as the Losing It show, I can't see how you can do all that in a week either. UGH! I wish reality shows could be that, real, and not this fake, way out there stuff.
Alrighty everyone, so 6 months has come and gone! I can't believe it. This week when you post your weight, also tell us how much you have lost for the year total. We are going to tally it all together so we can see how we did as a group.
My lowest was -15lbs for the year, but as of last week I was sitting at -12lbs. While I would love to have been at my goal weight and really could have been, I'm happy that I was able to hang on close to where I was since April. That shows me that while this will always be an issue, as long as I am careful I can stay near my goal.
Uhhh, I gained weight this past year, lololol. A year ago, I was 140lbs. I'm now 159 (I'm down two lbs from last week though).
Please don't count me...it'll throw it all off. ![]()
Oh Jade, we love you just the same!
I just thought it would be fun to do a tally since the big collective number of pounds lost always sounds so impressive.
I was up this morning. I'm thinking I need to chance weigh in days. Tuesday evening has apparently become eat Mexican with the parents night. Weigh in after that isn't working out too well.
Good morning my fellow monkeys.
Jade - great job on the 2 lb loss. You're doing great!!
Tracy - I ate a BLT for lunch a few days ago. I put 3 slices on the sandwich and munched on 2 pieces while making the sandwich. So a total of 5 slices of bacon. The next morning I was up 1.2 lbs.
So yeah, water retention does happen. Happily the next morning I was back down. If you would like to change the weigh in day, I think everyone would be fine with that. Any day is good for me.
Ok, weight was good this morning. These are my stats.
Jan 4th 183.0, June 30th 143.0
Yearly total 40 pounds
So how is everyone else doing????

Anyway you can increase your water intake with those meals, to counteract the sodium intake? You might wake up in the middle of the night several times to pee, but at least you won't have water weight in the morning. ![]()
Btw, I think I'm going to start a list of "Jade's tip to feeling thin" series on my Facebook, when they come to me.
I'll share them here too!
This is what I posted today:
Jade's Tip #1 for feeling thin: Wear clothes, especially pants, that fit you. Even if you hate that the tag is a higher number than you want, you'll feel better about yourself when you don't have a muffin-top situation. It is also my belief that pants that are too tight can result in digestive issues. ![]()

Great job!!!! You pretty much lost the equivalent to this: http://www.stripersnewmexico.com/images/083108/40 LB STRIPER 002.jpg ![]()

I actually had quite a bit of water/tea yesterday. I had a glass and a half of tea with dinner followed by two bottles of water. I was up several times during the night.
We will see what the scale says tomorrow.
Love the tip Jade!
Congrats Margie! Awesome job.
OH AWESOME!!!
I think we should all find pictures of our total weight loss goal, and then for each milestone.
For example, I want to lose this: http://www.pollsb.com/photos/o/118448-world_s_largest_potato.jpg And if you can't tell what that is, it's a 25lb potato!
So far, I've only lost: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/21/34645721_2e2fc003ec.jpg

If that's the case, moving your weigh-in day might be for the best. ![]()
And thanks! I think my next tip might have to do with getting "gussied" up.
I always feel thinner/prettier after I get my hair done. Maybe even shopping therapy...lol
Thanks guys.
Jade - great tip. Looking forward to reading more. Thanks for sharing.
Soooo, went in for my physical a few days ago. Last year the results from my cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar were not great. This is one reason that I've worked so hard at trying to lower my weight, in hopes that my levels would be better this time round. The results have come in.
Well, my blood pressure was much better. It's now staying around 110/70 and even lower than that much of the time. The tryglycerides number was great as well as the HDL (good cholesterol). The blood sugar (glucose) level was wonderful and the lowest it's ever been. (I had been pre-diabetic) So really happy with the changes I've been able to made through losing weight.
The only concern I still have is the LDL (bad cholesterol). That is still a bit high. Now this is definitely something that is in my family history. However, I'm going to do what I can to reach my goal weight and try my best to introduce more foods to help lower the level. I need to do more research to see what I need to incorporate and what I need to avoid. I did read that it was a great idea to incorporate 2 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil into your diet each day. Well I know that olive oil is great but geeez, that's about 240 calories and when you're on a 1200 calorie a day plan in order to lose weight, it's kinda difficult to incorporate. Anyway, I'll figure it all out, just need to spend some time researching.
These test results have shown me that we DO have the ability to make changes in our health if we work hard and dedicate ourselves to taking care of our bodies.
Thanks guys.

Anyway you can force yourself not to count those calories, if they can help with your cholesterol? What I mean is, you'll really be closer to 1,500 calories a day, but you're not counting in the oil, so your numbers will still be at the 1200 mark? I know it's kind of cheating, but it's a better cheat than not counting cookies or cake. ![]()
My holistic doctor swears by red yeast rice for cholesterol. I would do some more research on it. It's not FDA-approved, but that's because it's currently considered a natural remedy, which cannot be patented, and because it can't be patented, manufacturer's won't go through the cost to try and have it FDA-approved.
Talk it over with your doctor. ![]()
You may have a point, Jade. I would be increasing my calories but they would be good for me calories. It would probably mean that my weight loss would slow but the whole purpose in losing weight is to get healthy and if consuming a couple tablespoons of olive oil a day helps with getting healthy then a slower weight loss isn't really a big deal, right? (Geez, was that a run on sentence or what)?
Yeah, I think that's a good point. Thanks...
I've never heard of the red yeast rice. I'll have to ask my Dr about that. Thanks for the suggestion!
Margie, that was one of the reasons my dad started losing weight. His DR put him on meds for diebeties cause his blood sugar was up. My grandma has it so it is something that runs in the family. It scared him enough to make him want to lose weight. Alot of his numbers have improved with the loss.
I totally understand the calories we eat and watching every little thing. Have you talked to your DR about LDL lowering meds, that could be an option to try if diet doesn't help?
Another thing to remember, the more you exercise the more you can eat. So if you can add a little more time or another activity to your exercise you can make up for some of the increase intake.
Thanks Tracy. That is also a good point. Increase exercise some and that way I can increase the olive oil and have a win/win situation. Great idea.
Medication is an option if I can't bring down the LDL through weight loss and exercise. In all honesty I haven't been very consistent with the exercising. First there was the issue with the knee, then time constraints, etc etc. But I'm working really hard now to get in at least 30 minutes each day and will increase after a week or so if my knee allows. I just need to be consistent with not only the food but the exercise as well. If my efforts still don't bring it down, I will accept that it is in my genes and nothing more I can do but accept being on a cholesterol lowering medication. I just need to know that I've done all I can do first. The Dr was very impressed with the test results in all other areas and said to come back in 6 months and we will see where the LDL is at and go from there.
I'm sucking at the exercise too. Me and Hank haven't had a visit together in forever! I think I need to move him back into the living room, where atleast I see him every day and can feel guilty when I don't do it. In the other room, it seems it is out of sight, out of mind. ![]()
Good morning all. I've been out of town and when I got back one of the first things I did was check out the thread. I thought I would have a couple of pages to catch up on but it looks like it's been a bit quiet. I hope everyone is doing well. Things have been a bit crazy in my neck of the woods but everything is going good. Even with being gone, it was a pretty good week as far as eating goes. Didn't get in as much exercise as I had hoped but getting ready to get on the treadmill in just a few minutes. So how is everyone else doing?????
Hey Margie!
I'm up right now, darn all that holiday food and desserts left over! For some reason my eating hasn't been grand this week. Not completely horrible, but lets just say it is at the lower end of the middle road. maybe it is because I was feeling stressed about some things this week.
One positive thing I can report is I have done some cleaning since the last time I posted, which I totally needed it. No where near done as I'm still trying to re-organize my house, but it is a start, and I can now walk back into the cake room with out having to step over alot of stuff. And I moved stuff from the kitchen back into the room, so that helps. ![]()
I'm up.....excercise is significantly down....overwhelming amount of work at work (with big deadlines)...lots of big family events....and very little unstructured "play" time. Sleep time has been shortened or interrupted too...and that never helps things.
Know I need to refocus my efforts.....if I don't take good care of me, I am in no shape to take care of my family or to do great work with my clients.
I totally understand the need to refocus. Totally!!
Yep, been there done that too. Once you get off track, sometimes it's difficult to get focused again. Done that more times than I care to admit.
I know that you guys can and will get that motivation going again. I have total faith in each of you.
Looks like another challenge coming up for me next week. Looks like we will be going out of town again and will be eating out the entire time. Last time I did well with it and I'm really gonna work at making sure I do well this time as well. I'm getting closer to my weight goal and sure don't want to blow it now. I'm getting ready to go through my closet and pack up some of my larger clothes and replace them with a smaller size. I went shopping yesterday and really had a great time picking out the smaller clothes. I know I went overboard in buying new clothes and need to weed through them and make some returns. I think I got carried away
Everything was on sale and it was hard not to buy everything I saw. But being that I still have weight to lose and I want to be one size smaller than I am right now at goal weight, it's stupid to buy a lot of clothes right now.
I did pick up a cook book today that I'm anxious to look through. It's put out by the American Heart Association. I'm hoping I can find some good low fat, low cholesterol recipes in there. There's so much to learn. Good fats, bad fats, hydrogenated, partially hydrogenated, FULLY HYDROGENATED which by the way means that it does NOT contain trans fats. Now, is that not ridiculous?
Geeez, why does everything have to be so complicated? Oh well, guess I'll figure it all out in time. While we are traveling next week, I will have some free time to check out the book and hopefully by the time we get back home, I'll have a better understanding of it.
Alrighty, hope everyone enjoys the rest of their week-end. It sure is going by quickly..... Take care.......
Wow it's been ages since I looked in here, and now there are74 pages! Way to go, keeping at it!
Hi again.
Writing every piece of food I ate helped me lost weight. I also joined weight watchers. It took me 3 years to go from 240 pounds to 1120 pounds. After having my kids, I gained weight from working fulltime, going to school working on a baking and pastry diploma. I ate when I was stressed.
I had high blood pressure, diabetes 2, thryoid problems, joint problems on my hips, knees from carrying the excess weight.
I really believe the bottom line is less food and move more. Stay away from junk food- sugar and flour.
It took me a long time to loose the weight but I don't want to ever weigh over 100 pounds again,
There is no magic for losing weight. Calories in equals calorie burned.
Again, try writing down everything you eat. My food diary gave me a visual record of the food and junk food I ate.
Wow... Bakecakes you gained 880 pounds in 3 years????
hee hee, only kidding. I know it must have been a typo. WOW!!! You really lost a lot of weight. It may have taken a while to do that but it was well worth it, I'm sure. You must have really been dedicated to your goal weight. I absolutely agree about writing everything down that you eat. That has helped me tremendously. I used to look at the amounts that I would eat and think, "this can't be but so bad" but then when I started charting calories down, I soon realized I was way off. I'm so glad that you were so successful. I know you must feel so much better. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.
Sugarfrosted - thanks and I'm glad you popped in. Hope to hear from ya again.
A fellow CC'er suggested I join this thread since I joined weight watchers about a month ago (over 10 lbs lost already!). I haven't read all 74 pages
but wanted to share something I discovered last week.
I've been going online to get nutritional info so I'd know how to Weight-Watcher-Point it and plan my eating for the day. What an eye opening experience!!
I've never even SEEN foods that had triple-digit fat content before!!!
But O'Charlies has a few of them. In fact, even their salads are not real "healthy" choices.
http://www.ocharleys.com/nutrition/
Check out Baked Penne Italiano ... 99 grams of fat? Seriously? SERIOUSLY???
"Outrageous Chicken and Spinach Lasagna. Sounds healthy, right? 73 grams of fat and over 1200 calories. Whoa!! ![]()
Top Shelf Combo Appetizer .... 130 grams of fat and 1880 calories. I didn't know you could put that much fat in a dish!
My education is a fascinating journey!
Still no treadmill (I might have a way of taking care of that, muahahahahaha), but DH and I are going to a park with friends today and going walking/hiking. It'll be hot, but at least we'll be moving. ![]()
Had a lot of fun with friends last night. Decided to NOT drink anything but unsweetened iced tea, otherwise I'd have had 2-3 drinks. Saved money on the bill, and carbs.
But right now, I need to finish getting ready, then I'm going to break in our new power tool.
DH is so jealous I have a reason to use it before he does. lololol (And for those curious, we picked up the Dremel Trio last night at Home Depot.)
Hey there indydebi. It's great to see ya on here. WOW!! You've lost 10 pounds already. That is GREAT!!! Doesn't it make ya feel great to see those numbers going down? I know what ya mean about the amount of fat in so many dishes served in restaurants. It is absolutely amazing. No wonder so many restaurants don't want to list the nutritional values. I would go out and order whatever sounded like it was healthy. Yeah, right. The names of the dishes can be deceiving, for sure. I'm always checking sites for the nutritional values of foods at restaurants now BEFORE going there. This way, I can control my calories and fat better. Of course we never really know if all of the values are absoultey correct but it's better than going in blindsided I guess. Do you have an Applebee's in your area? I absolutely love their under 500 calorie meals. Especially the Asiago Peppercorn steak. Anyway, so glad you joined our little group indydebi and I am looking forward to chatting with you.
