After My 20Th Cake, I Realize I Hate...
Decorating By lostincake Updated 1 May 2009 , 10:30pm by drowsyrn
I too am shocked and amazed by the admission by Sugarshack. Who would have thought?!
OK, I hate making royal icing and basically avoid it altogether. I also don't like designing cakes. I need structure. I need someone to tell me "I want this exactly" not "I want a cake..."
Oh, thanks for reminding me elise...licking the spatula is yummmmmy...the only part i like about baking LOL
Like the rest of you I also hate the cleanup-we need a Cake fairy that secretly appears and washes all the bags and tips!! But what I hate more than the cleanup is making marshmallow fondant! It is so messy, and I hate getting all of the shortening all over my hands! Yuck! But I don't mind coloring the fondant.
I hate having to re-bake cakes - because my loving children pretend not to hear "Mom's making a cake... touch & loose an arm" there always seems to be a chunk (or two) of cake somehow disappear while it cools... and the white icing is less than I made too... After finding blue teeth with 3 of the 4 kids, the colored icing never gets touched now... HMMMMM! Love mixing colors, cleanup is a snap - because when I find the cake thief (my kids narc on each other constantly) they get to clean as punishment for the crime!
Yes MMF...icing everywhere! I don't bother greasing my hands i just melt the marshmallows in a bowl then add icing sugar into the bowl and stir it until it is sort of sticky dough and then put in on the bench top and knead more icing sugar in and that way for some reason my hands never get really sticky and messy as long as i keep a thick film of icing sugar between my hands and the dough as i knead it.
Oh that also reminds me if i am not careful i end up getting colouring everyhwere like on my clothes etc cose before i put the lid on i would have accidently leant on the cap or something if i not careful ![]()
I hate cleaning up more than y'all hate cleaning up because I have to do it twice! Before I get started doing anything and after I get finished!
I live with two teenage boys and a preteen daughter who pretend they don't even know we have a dishwasher. My husband cooks, but he does not clean. Needless to say, on any given day my kitchen is a disaster.
I want my own cake kitchen. It would be so neat and clean and I could walk in and just start baking or making candy clay or anything else I wanted to do and if it got late I could just shut the door and leave it until the next day....sorry...got lost in my fantasy.
Yep. For me it's the cleaning.
AMEN...
I have two 20 year olds and an 18 year old who I, evidentally, never taught to pick up after themselves.. TG I have a DH who helps me with all the clean up before and after.
I HATE:
Cleaning up after I airbrush - how in the world do color partials travel so far?
Cleaning decorating tips and anything used in the process of making BC -I could seriously enter a greased pig contest.
I LOVE:
Decorating.
Sculpting little fondant animals.
Teaching myself techniques I never thought I could learn!
I don't ike waiting for things to dry/set before I can move on. When I'm on a roll I just wanna keep going!!
Also hate that feeling just before someone picks up thier cake wondering whether they will like it or not.
(think I need to get a bit more confidence!)
I hate with a passion:
making BC
leveling and filling
coloring fondant and BC
rolling out fondant
cutting and covering boards
I do not love but not quite hate:
baking
icing or covering in fondant
rolling out fondant in pasta roller in large quantities
I love:
decorating

Oh my gosh...there's hope for ME!!!
I would GLADLY clean up (tips, sugar cloud and airbrush particles included), bake, torte, fill, cut and cover ALL your boards, color bc for ANY of ya'll that would ice my cakes smooth
. Heck I'd even deliver your cakes for you!
I, too, LOVE to decorate...and especially make sugarpaste figures.
I've often said if I win the lottery, I'm going to 1-hire somebody to ice ALL my cakes, and 2-get a pedicure every other day ![]()
frosting the cake...never get it looking even and smooth
I want Rocketgirl's mom to come visit me.
I'll provide room and board (and a pair of wellies) in the beautiful English countryside in return for an 80% reduction in my clean up!
BTW, I hate the sugar cloud.
I LOVE baking. But then baking was my passion for twenty years before even I started learning professional decorating skills. I love everything about it. I love the texture of batter, the smell of the cake in the oven, the smell of sugar, I even love cake pans. I know; I'm nuts!
I also hate cleanup. I feel like the decorator version of Pigpen from the Peanuts comic strip. Except the cloud I walk around in is powdered sugar, not dirt.
haha! Funny you posted while I was typing, miss_sweetstory, considering your Snoopy avatar and your mention of the sugar cloud!

I'm with you all the way, I think I'd call it my sanity sanctuary ![]()
I hate making MMF and I hate it when it dries out on me. I wish I could afford to buy a premade fondant but I am not a business yet so no dice there! LOL
I don't hate cleaning up as much as I used to because everything goes in the dishwasher now that I have one. That makes it much easier. I also use the smooth side of a quilter's cutting board to roll out my fondant and make figures and such. That makes it easier because all I have to do is dump it into the garbage and then take it back to the tub to hose it down and sanitize it. (I have one of those hand-held showers for the kids.) Those are also really nice because the smooth side is so smooth that the fondant usually won't stick to it.
I have recently found a deep love for painting on fondant with food coloring and brushes. There is so much you can do in that area and I am finding an excuse to use it on every cake I have made lately.
I LOVE to decorate, I HATE THE MESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If someone baked them and iced them and handed them to me to decorate I'd be fine. Can't afford that. Anyway, I really hate making the frosting the sugar puff all over my dark cupboards. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!!! and the tips to clean actually those don't bother me as bad as the bags. Even when I use the disposables I HATE having to cut off the end to get my coupler off. I HATE THE MESS, oops I said that already. ![]()
I hate:
The cleaning up
Getting my timing off track
When my design doesn't go as plan
Covering cake boards
Needing something and then finding out, you don't have it
Coloring my BC
Fighting to get my tips out of the piping bags
Mixing, baking and waiting for the cakes to cool
I LOVE!, when my kitchen is all clean up!
When the cake is all done and there is time to spare
When my design turns out better then planned
When I have everything I need, without having to go to the store to get it...even when something pops up at the last min.
When my daughter covers the cake board and mixes the colors for me ![]()

What I would LOVE even more: Someone who would do all the clean up, my mixing/baking, cleaning the tips ![]()
God Bless,
Sharon
i hate powdered sugar and the clean up...i love doin everything else...when i make the mmf the powdered sugar seems to get everywhere...my husband helps clean up when he is home but thats not very often with his job...
I don't mind making the cake, just wish it would come out perfect every time. I then wish someone would stack the cakes and frost them for me. If I could really do just the actually decorating part that would be awesome! I enjoy the final product but I always end up procrastinating doing them, but them again I am a big procrastinator, hehe. Thinking about getting the supplies, making the cake, making the frosting, making the fondant, baking, stacking, frosting, decorating, waiting for fondant things to dry....its such a process...but a process that in the end is apparently all worth it for me. ![]()
On cleaning up - here are a couple of tips (no pun intended
):
Drape a dishtowel over your mixer as you slowly add the powdered sugar. Eliminates the "puff" mess!
Place your icing bags with, tips still on, into glass/bowl of hot water. Makes removing coupler much easier.
HTH - Happy Caking!! ![]()
I cannot stand coloring BC. My husband and I cannot stand the cleanup. Thankfully he helps about 80% of the time with the cleanup.
Also, icing the cake -- aghhh
I am becoming a little more daring with experimenting with the different cake flavors so the baking does not bother me too much. I just get impatient at times as I cannot wait to see how it will turn out.
I love the decorating part. Just give me an iced cake and let me decorate!!! I guess that would be the easy way out but that works for me. lol
I hate making BC!!!!
Using wet dish towels helps to contain the mess, but my KA is a sticky, powdered sugar disaster! It takes me just as long if not longer, to clean my KA after making BC, than the actual act of making the BC! That's just not right, people.
Even single time I make BC, I swear that powdered sugar lung has got to be an actual medical condition! ![]()
The single best thing about caking is when your cake turns out even more amazing than you expected or ever imagined. Nothing is better than impressing yourself. ![]()
Yup, I hate this part too. Here is a suggestion, makes clean up ALOT easier. I buy the commercial size sarap wrap at Sam's, 2000 ft I think. I lay it to cover the ENTIRE surface before I start. When I'm done making the buttercream, I roll everything into the garbage, powdered sugar bags and all. This saves a ton of time. ALthough some of the tiny particles fly around and some on the floor too, much easier than trying to wipe up all the powdered sugar.
Sweet day!
People ask me ALL the time if I will make dainties for them too...I tell them - I'm not a baker, I'm a decorator!!
I hate the clean up BEFORE the cake...I have children and I bake and decorate in the kitchen in my home...huge PITA! I get freakishly neat when it comes time for a cake, so I clean up and no one is allowed in my kitchen until the cake is done!
If I ever did open up a bakery...the first thing I would do is hire a baker...preferably someone who could also cover the cakes too (although that isn't the part I hate the most, but don't love).
Like so many of you, one of my biggest peeves is clean-up. I'm convinced that if dishwashers didn't exist, I could NOT be a caker!
But, I have to say that I don't mind making fondant, making BC, icing/torting/filling; I don't mind baking (that is my first love!), don't mind mixing colors. I LOVE hand-making figures, LOVE gumpaste, LOVE making RI flowers. And since I've been using the bench-scraper/Viva method, my cakes are smoother than ever!
I think for me personally though, what I hate the most is my own insecurity. When my fondant doesn't smooth out perfectly, it looks like a flashing beacon on the cake to me. When my borders aren't perfectly even, ditto. I hate looking at the cake I've just inveseted irreplaceable hours of my life into, and thinking, "I could have done *this* better, I could have done better on *that*." My husband says that being a perfectionist is a good thing, that it means you'll always be trying to better your skills, not settling for mediocre. But to me it means that I'm never satisfied, and always wondering how I could have done better. Sorry to go all "Deep Thoughts with Jack Handy" on y'all, but there it is!
And, sugarshack, most of us would clean your kitchen for FREE if it meant we could learn your mad skills! Maybe we should start a sign-up thread?? LOL!
I'm with ya Sassy 74, I have Sharon's DVD and Jennifers also , the part I'm wondering is why while they are baking and decorating their work surface and kitchen DOES NOT look like mine? I swear if I went to get a job at a bakery they would fire me for the mess I make. No Joke. ![]()
