I got a call last night, from a REALLY good customer, that wanted me to make a bachelorette party cake for her. You know, the typical male anatomy cake. I've never done one...(sheesh, its been so long, I'm not sure I'd even remember what it looks like, lol)...and I know that I blushed about 15 shades of red, before I told her no.

Now, I like this lady. We've been friends for a while now. But I just couldn't bring myself to do it. I recommended another cake decorator, who has done them in the past, but my friend told me she doesn't like her cakes as well as mine. She reminded me that I've made "boob" cakes, and I reminded her they've always had a bikini top on.

As it stands, she's ordered just a white cake with white buttercream, and I suggested to her that she could pick up some decorations at the local "adult content" store. She didn't seem real happy.

Am I a wuss or what?

You should never do what you are uncomfortable with. You were right to say no.

I would have done it, only for the practice, and challenge. I wouldn't even think twice about saying no, if I were uncomfortable doing it. You did the right thing. You are the baker, and have the right to turn down a cake!

I would do it. The first male member cake I made was a 12 member salute.
for this lady for her birthday. It was ordered by the town bar who wanted to suprise her. for her 60th .I was never so embarassed then when I was asked to deliver it. It was to be taken into the bar a happy hour. I could feel the heat raidiate from my face. icon_redface.gificon_redface.gif

now I look back and laugh... it was rather funny I still hear stories of that night..

I made one for my daughter to take into her office. She said the funniest part was everyone was shocked that "chris's MOM made that cake!" icon_surprised.gif Evidently they didn't think grey haired gramma's remembered what these look like, either! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

But if you're not comfortable making this cake, then you are ok in telling her no.

I just turned down a request for the same type of cake. I referred the order to someone in town who I know who will do those types of orders.

Do not feel like a "wuss" for declining to take on a job that makes you uncomfortable. That is why you are in business for yourself! icon_smile.gif

I agree with the others, if you were uncomfortable with it you have a right to say no. I have never been asked to make anatomony cakes and I already know I would refuse if I were. Don't be brow beaten or made to feel guilty if she is a real friend she may not agree but will respect your decision and look elsewhere.

You're not a wuss... I wouldn't have done it either, eventhough I could do it with my eyes closed. If I can't put it on my website (and show my kids) I won't make it. Don't feel like a wuss. I do think they are funny and I have no problem with anyone who makes them... I just don't. icon_smile.gif

My fear being from a small town with few if any custom bakers is you get called for every bachelor/bachelorette and over 30 party cake. I wonder what my children would say lol!!! I say no thanks!

I would have said no also - I agree with everyone else, if I couldn't or wouldn't put is on my website or I would feel uncomfortable if my children/family or friends saw the cake - why do it?

Hi there!

I completely understand how you feel...
Last year I got an order for the "male anatomy" cake for a party and I felt a little...shy LOL.

Not to mention that it was my uncle's girlfriend who ordered it! But I did it anyway, and after I did it- I felt so silly for feeling uncomfortable about it! Think about it, usually when you have a bachelorette party it's all about male anatomy decor and everything.

Plus, since I've made the cake, I still get compliments about it and how people would love to have one for their friend, sister, cousin, etc.
But if you're really uncomfortable about it, then saying No was the best thing to do. After all, it's your name on the line.

I wouldn't do it, either. I won't do any cakes that I would not want my children to see.

But, you should check out Debbie Brown's (I hope that's the right name, my braines a little foggy today!) "Naughty Cakes" books. They are cute, funny, and suggestive without being crude and graphic. Those would be something I would be comfortable doing.

I wouldn't touch such a request w/a 10 million $$$$$ price tag!
You have every right to say no to anything you do not want to have your name associated with!

I agree with you (and most of the posters here). I couldn't imagine the embarassment if my children were to see it in my portfolio. If Idon't look at porn I don't want to make it either.

I think it's very admirable of you to stick to your guns.

I would totally do it. And as far as the kids seeing it, I can understand the protection if it was really a pornographic image like actual penetration or something but it sounds like we are really just talking about anatomy cakes here. I'm not the lady who goes over the top and walks around naked at home or anything, but its just a body. Your sons and daughters HAVE these parts so its not as much news to them as you might think icon_smile.gif

We have a major body shame issue in this country and the thinking that it is sooo mortifying just to see a penis or some breasts without a bikini just perpetuates it.

Good for you for not doing something that would make you feel uncomfortable. Part of having your own business is getting to decide what is important to you, and having the freedom to follow through.

Oh please! At our house, it's pretty common to hear me yell, "NAKED MOM COMING THRU!" as I go from bathroom to bedroom or something.

They HAVE been warned! icon_twisted.gif

(And when hubby and I make those little comments to each other, our 16 year old will turn red and say, "Oh come on! Kid in the room! Kid! In! The! ROOOOOM!" And it's really fun to watch her when hubby does a touchy-feely in the kitchen and I yell out, "Dad's touching my butt!!!!!!!!!!!" icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif )

You are not a wuss! I can't bring myself to even think about making one!

I agree with the others: don't do it if you aren't comfortable and I wouldn't make it if my kids can't see it! Cuz my kids are all over me when I am doing cakes.

My SIL asked me to do a corset cake for a bachelorette party, I told her that great! Just don't ask me to do a "hoo hoo" cake! She was rolling on the floor.

Ok - this gave me quite the chuckle! And I NOT gonna ask HOW you could do that with your eyes closed!! icon_wink.gif Thanx for the laugh - I needed it today!

Indydebi - you are one funny chick! I bet its been a real "riot" being your kids! icon_wink.gif I raised mine the exact same way and man did we have some fun! They are grown now and the stories are better than the actual events!

Ummmm - would I do it? Probably not .. Do I think your a wuss? Absolutly .... NOT!

Before I got into this cake-decorating-hobby-gone-wild, I went to my niece's "bridal" shower (mom, aunts, grandmas in attendance) and was completely mortified to see a penis cake sitting on the table with the matching party ware to go with it. I may be a prude but I thought it totally inappropiate and best reserved for a bachlorette party with her peers. Even then I don't think I could make one, let alone have a piece of cake! EWW!

I've done both penis and breast cakes. They're on my website, along with everything else. I have rent, electricity, payroll, insurance, etc. Heck, I feel like such a total hypocrite making cakes for christenings and brit milahs (I am against both infant baptism and infant genital mutation)..... but I do them anyway. There is rent to pay.

But if it makes you really uncomfortable then it is, of course, your right to decline.

I, for one, would never ever even consider doing a cake with a swastika or the KKK, but my guess is that there are plenty of folks right here on CC who would.
