I am not positive but I don't think Costco sells the Bettercreme! But you can buy the whipped kind at Sams! Its a big bucket but keeps a long time in the freezer!

At Sams Club...I will buy the unwhipped bettercream, but if I buy the premade bucket o' buttercream frosting can I still "doctor" it up and add flavoring(coffee creamers, extracts, compounds etc......)??

Yes you can. You just fold it in instead of whipping it together. I don't believe you can get the liquid kind at Sam's, unless you are lucky and your area has it!! icon_cry.gif

OOPS!! icon_redface.gif I didn't clarify with Sams which one they were referring to when I got pricing over the phone.....In my mind I was thinking unwhipped so I didn't bother to ask, I guess I'd better check it out...

Oh phooey! To the best of my knowledge they only sell the big buckets of prewhipped stuff. Man it would be nice if they had the liquid though. In gallon jugs like milk or something. Oh baby... that sounds so awesome.

I have a crazy question about bettercreme. It seems like everyone is raving about this, so I want to try it out. However, I am wondering if bettercreme tastes like cool whip type icing in any way. I do not like the "whipped icing" that tastes similar to cool whip at all. So, I want to be sure before I make myself crazy looking for this stuff!

Cakegirl, it IS a whipped icing and has the light texture of Cool Whip, but not the same taste. If you absolutely HATE Cool Whip you may not be crazy about straight Bettercreme, but I am guessing that once you dress it up with one of the suggestions on the first page, you will probably like it. Especially the middle variation with pudding mix... it's like a delicious mousse. I'm not going to encourage you to go too crazy trying to find it if you don't like whipped icing though. I don't want to be the source of your disappointment! Haha!

Cakegirl:

I've only tried the chocolate bettercreme so far and it kinda has that fake taste. Same goes for Pastry Pride, the Frostin Pride however is a little better. I am trying them out with added flavoring when I get my samples from Amoretti. I'm hoping it will cut the fake taste out.

icon_cry.gif I checked with Sams and they do NOT have the liquid icon_cry.gif

Can I fold in the flavoring like you advised me for the buttercreme?

What is the length of time I can store each in the freezer?

Thanks

Yes, the prewhipped bettercreme can be used for the 'recipes' I've outlined, you just have to do it a little differently. Fold in flavorings or syrups to get your desired flavor, or make pudding using half as much milk as normal, then fold in the prewhipped bettercreme until it is as light as you want it for a mousse filling/icing.

Have used richs non dairy topping for looong. Used the BETTERCREME recently-loved the lightness of it compared to BC and I think its a keeper!!! I think I will make the switch-but you cant deny that aluminum after taste...wish they got rid of it. Mel-any tips on doctoring it without changing the flavors?

If you don't want to change the flavor, then just some 'good' vanilla. That will make it taste a little more like home made. thumbs_up.gif

I did-but the aftertaste was still there! The vanilla pudding maybe?

Well the pudding is definitely going to change the bettercreme though. It won't be the same texture or consistency. It's definitely good though!

I can not find the liquid version here in Abilene, TX. I did call Sam's and ask for the pre-made. I went to pick it up last minute.....my bad there.....and it was absolutely disgusting. It was not light at all. It tasted like a VERY sweet and heavy buttercream that had a hint of bitterness. I love the whipped icing and have used Pastry Pride before. But I could not believe the taste of this. Any ideas.....?

It sounds like you got But-R-Cream not Bettercreme. Double check the package and if that's what happened, I'd take it back. Tell them you ordered Bettercreme and this is what you got and you don't want it. Sorry to hear about this. icon_sad.gif

I havent used bettercream before but would like to color the icing to make my daughters birthday cake and she wants some pastel colors. I would love your input.
I have enjoyed reading this topic and have learned a lot!!
Thanks!!!

great!! well then my next question would be what works better....gel or the liquid food coloring? and then the next question is at what point during the whipping process would you add it? I have read that one minute the bettercream is underwhipped and then bam its too stiff so just wondering when you would add it.
thanks for helpin me out. I'm new to bettercream!!

Either is fine really, whichever one you have will work. I add the color right at the beginning. Pour the liquid into the bowl, pour in any flavor and/or color, then turn the mixer on.

Just got home with my buttercream from Sams, actually pretty good(I think). I can see the posibilities of "doctorin" it up now that my Amoretti samples arrived too!!

I have a questions though...

Does it crust?

How long can I keep it in the freezer?

What happens if add the flavoring while re-mixing(in a KA) buttercream, instead of folding it in like I read above?

OMG, I LOVE this thread! I have learned so much already! Unfortunately, I haven't found the liquid Bettercreme YET.....but I'll keep looking. I found the prewhipped but at quite a price and quite a drive.....but I'll keep looking.

In the meantime, I was wondering if VelveTop is a similar substitution? Sorry if it was already mentioned......even though I DID read this entire thread! There's just so much to digest here. Anyhow, it kind of looks the same and I came across it by accident while scouring the internet after having "cakecentral forum obsession jitters." No cure for it, really.... icon_biggrin.gif I found it at dawnfoods dot com, clicked on products, bakery products, icings. Then, of course, if this IS a similar product, the quest begins anew trying to find the darn stuff! icon_biggrin.gif

Thanks for such a great thread!

Mel

Well, my assumption is that if you put it in a KA and start whipping, it's going to turn into a sweet butter like substance, the same way whipping cream does. You can add more liquid to bring it back. That's why I say fold it in for the prewhipped. I little light mixing shouldn't hurt, just take it slow!

I believe VelveTop is about the same thing, so if you can find that GO FOR IT!! thumbs_up.gif

I am making the Whoppers cupcakes that Melia mentioned on the first page of this thread. I am a little excied. It took me three weeks to find Bettercreme and then it was way overpriced. So, does anyone know if it can be bought from Sysco? Someone entioned that like fifteen pages back but no one had ever mentioned it. If I can't get the liquid that route, I will just try my Sam's for the prewhipped variety.
