Well there are many excuses for the cake's appearance. icon_biggrin.gif

1. I only had 3 hours to do everything (I woke up at 8 but my mom didn't have the kitchen ready until 9:30. Furthermore, the cakes didn't defrost until 11.)

2. The cakes fell apart! YESS! The top tier and the bottom tier fell apart! I had to glue and sculpt using the icing!

3. I couldn't cut the center dowel!

4. The fondant was too short on one side of two tiers by like ONE CENTIMETER! So that through it off.

5. The strawberry filling on the top tier broke through the dam!

So everything was going downhill. The person who said that I may already be screwed jinxed me. icon_mad.gif

And then the pictures I've gotten were blurry and pretty much thumbnails. So much for "friends".

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

I'd like to thank the following people for their help in making the cake less crappy:

1. RisqueBusiness overall. My mentor in all things sugar.

2. KnoxCop1 for giving me good advice on the how to go about with the cakes in this EVER GOING process.

3. Janette for always being there.

4. Melvira for "keeping me up".

And some others but I'm sorry I forgot you- I guess you really didn't help at all but people always say this after their speeches. icon_lol.gif JK. There are more.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM IS APPRECIATED. DO NOT BE NICE, BE TRUTHFUL. I CAN'T GET BETTER WITHOUT GETTING ANGRY.

It is very different from the one you planned, but it looks like you made it work out fine.

Did they at least appreciate your efforts?

Yea JoanneB, completely different. When I made the first roses they looked horrid so I kept practicing and by that time I would, by no means, have had sufficient time to make 70 roses. icon_cool.gif

I know it didn't even meet the lowest expectations but hopefully the next one will! (AND IT HAS TO BECAUSE IT'S FOR A COMPETITION! icon_eek.gif )

Lovely job! The roses look great. One tip to make sure your fondant will cover is to "test" the size by putting the cake pan on top of the roller out fondant and see if there will be enough to cover the sides, I do this sometimes when I am not sure.

What kind of fondant did you use?

Also next time maybe the boarder could be a little smaller, a bit more delicate. It's totally worth it to buy a pearl mold if you think you will be doing more of these, it took some practice, but I love mine!

I have not had trouble frosting fozen cakes, you might not want to wait for them to defrost completely before frosting - and give yourself plenty of time, work the day before the event if you can - although I do the same thing! I keep thinking it's too soon to start, then by the time I do, I fell I should have started days before! UGH!

Super job, you should be pleased, at least a little icon_wink.gif - can't wait to see the next one!

I used Wilton's. icon_surprised.gif We peeled it off before serving although some adventurous people (myself included) tasted it and it really wasn't AS bad as I'd expected. Next time I'm buying Satin Ice, though; if people think it's good compared to Wilton's then it must be even better!

Thanks for the tip SweetResults, glad you didn't find the cake repulsive.

The good thing was that I got a compliment from everyone who'd tasted it and I've already been asked to do three other cakes.

Sorry for you people; you're going to have to put up with repulsive pictures in the near future. icon_lol.gif

Oh I've seen MUCH worse! At least yours was elegant, not flawless, but you still pulled off elegant. It really is quite nice, great design.

I have a cake somewhere from when I was about 12 or so that was frosted ROYAL BLUE, with a spray of VERY bright Pink rosebuds and Leaf Green leaves, with a VERY Yellow boarder and Yellow drop flowers. You needed sunglasses to look at it! But hey, it was the '80's those colors were in at the time. Be thankful white elegance and simplicity are in now while you are just starting out.

In 20 years you will look back on that cake and it won't be anywhere near as repulsive as you think it is now LOL!

And you will love the Satin Ice, so much easier to work with and quite yummy.

Sorry - I tend to ramble LOL!

Yea! I'm so proud! Your rosees look great and I think it's very pretty. There are always things I learn for next time after I make a cake. I still put too much filling in. It's a great compliment that more people ordered cakes from you. That's how I can tell if a particular cake was a success.

Love the roses. They look very nice. You did great even with all the troubles you had. I agree that the pearls could be a little smaller but the overall cake is not as bad as you seem to think. It must have been yummy if you received 3 more cake orders. thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif Good luck and be sure to learn from your mistakes with this cake.

I can't believe I'm feeling all mushy icon_redface.gif

The cake is Beautiful. I hadn't really thought about what I was expecting to see - but you did an amazing job. You have a gift. icon_wink.gif

I see where the Brat bumped it. Was that your Brat (brother/sister) or someone else's? icon_evil.gif

I think I told the story of going to a Graduation party where I made the cake and some Brats where running around and kicked the legs (card table). Table went down and the cake flew across the floor. icon_mad.gif

I just got the pearl maker. Pricey, but I like it.

Keep up the cakes, just don't fall behind in your schoolwork, that's more important.

Thanks for the help. What is that pearl mold that SR is talking about? I'd like to know.

The pearls were made by my sous chefs (mom and brother) and let's just say they aren't as near to perfection as I am. . . icon_lol.gif

Thanks Janette, I was awaiting your critique! thumbs_up.gif

It looks a lot different then what I'd planned- many have seen that difference.

No, it was the brat of the lady who said, "Just tell me how much for a carrot cake that serves 30 and I'll give it to you." Too bad I can't charge (can only accept donations, but soon I'm getting my own kitchen to work from and not that one that the creepy "uncle" owns icon_rolleyes.gif ).

Hmm, is there more to this story? You finally graduated from HS! thumbs_up.gif I'm proud of you Janette- I knew with a little more effort you could finally do it after 60 years of going at it! icon_twisted.gif

I think the cake looks so elegant! I don't know what your previous design was with the 70 roses but your roses look awesome and are so well displayed.

How cool that you have sous chefs. I'd kill for one or two of those. I can't drag my hubby into the kitchen when I'm doing cakes. And unfortunately, those in my house who are all too willing to be underfoot when there's cake (my 3 1/2 and 2 year old boys) they don't count as sous chefs since they can't yet reach the sink to wash my dishes. Maybe some day (sigh).

So I didn't catch it in your post . . . what was the reaction of the recipient??? I know you said everyone complimented you on the taste and you got other cake orders but what was that initial gut response from the person whose cake it was?

I, for one, can't wait to see the next one you do. You're far more productive than I ever was at 15.

You can find them on most of the cake decorating supply sites. They run around $20, when you see it you will ask why? But, it does the job. I think I got mine at sugarcraft.com I have ordered so much on line the last week it's hard to remember what I ordered and where.

I will try to discribe it. It's rubber, you bend it to open and place a rolled piece of fondant, gumpaste and close. Cut off excess and when you open it again wala, you have a string of pearls.

If there is anyone out there that can explain it better, pipe in.

One of the sites gave a play by play instructions.

By the way Congrats on the addtional orders.

Ok, Dude:

When I got logged on this morning in the cruiser, (yes--I do log on at work by using Sprint link wireless--with my own isp address) it's like 24 degrees out there. Seeing this warmed me up! icon_rolleyes.gif

By your opening description, I was thinking I'd see some horrid thing---NOT! You pulled off a very nice cake! Seriously--by your description I was thinking it'd be like something from a 5 year old's play-doh session or whatever. Your cake looks great!

Proud of you! (And thanks for the honorable mention. Makes me all warm and fuzzy!) icon_smile.gif

Critique: Yeah--I'd go with a pearl mold for the border, and is the fondant a little thin on this one side? May be that's where the brat-child (a term I've used for both of mine since toddlerhood--"Brat child") bumped it?

Still looks great to me. Congrats!

Nglez09 - you give me hope for my boys! You did a great job on the cake! There are always "brats" around, some of them are actually adults who intentionally poke cakes.

The only thing I could see wrong with it was the fondant was a little thin on one part, but that's better than my first fondant attempt!!!!! You are doing well - just keep it up! You may be the next Duff or Mike McCrary!! thumbs_up.gif

I got my bead maker from Sugarcraft as well, I want to get a few different sizes now. It took a little bit to master it, I still don't have it down pat, but it is a lot easier!

Another trick is to roll out the fondant snake and use an egg slicer to cut even slices all at once, then roll those.

Thanks for the critique; I will try to find a seller of the bead maker.

Ckkerber: the recipients were very happy with the cake and said all that "it's beautiful" and "it's so pretty" stuff but I can see right through them. I guess they were expecting it to be flawless for my first cake.

And then this guy (my sister-in-law's cousin) was like, "Did you remember to put dowels in? I'm not too fond of fondant. Did you smooth the fondant?" And gave me all this crap about how ugly it was. icon_lol.gif

Oh well. For the people it was for the taste was more important than the look- and, if I do say so myself, it was goooooood- and I DON'T even like cake!

The next one I'll be doing for "others" is probably a stacked present box cake for a "Victorian baby shower"- w/e that is!
