Torki, what are the sugar cubes used for? They are to pretty to pop in a tea or coffee?!

you got it....the sugar cubes just go straight into your tea or coffee and dissolve....When I first saw them I didn't think they would dissolve but I made DH test run them and they dissolve fine.!

They can be served/place on the dessert spoons on the tables or in this case boxed (reception ppl wouldn't put on spoons!)and guests help themselves.... from the feed back I got, a lot of guests took them home rather than use them icon_confused.gif

They are simple and inexpensive to make just make a mould/s from something small like a button (I used a large bead) and use fondant. let dry and attach with a small dot of royal.

TORKI: Your cakes are amazing.... I can't believe you made so many... so i will stop whinging about the 70 I have to do this week. I have also been meaning to tell you for ages... that your work is amazing!! You are a sculptress.... my kids love your wiggles firgures.... But my favourite of yours are the old boots.... so amazing.. so real looking!!!.... my sister who is a horse fanatic..... well you can guess what she loves about your work!?!?!!

NICOLE: I was actually ironing as you were putting your message in..... made a promise that I wouldn't sit at computer until ironing finished... sort of broke it because here I am now, but just having a little break. Almost finished. Determined to finish because once I start on these cakes... all work around house gets ignored.... my kids are lucky even to be fed!!! Fish fingers, pasta... is all they can hope for from Thursday to Saturday!!!!! By the way... we are 8 hours behind.. until day light savings starts for you and ends for us... then the difference is 10 hours!!!

KITCHENAID / KENWOOD :
My husband would never have probably bought me one.... maybe for Christmas after I had begged big time. I bought mine with money from my jewellery sold.... I just decided to quickly go and order, pay for it whilst money was in my hand... I also used hand mixers up until then..... which died while I was mixing a cake........ I walk away from my KA just to watch it in action...... just because now I can. I had never attampted a pavlova before having my KA, after my Aunty nancy swears you have to beat the egg whites for 14 minutes..... Well NANCE::: NOT WITH THE KA!!!

ok... break over... back to ironing. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

Yes, I did when had my tea with sugar icon_wink.gif and my Grandpa did it all the time. He actually had a little "sugar pliers" that cut the sugarcubes into tiny pieces. I used to love watching him doing it icon_smile.gif

My Oh, My - I just had a look at your work Trudi....

Absolutley amazing. icon_eek.gif The horse that you made - did you get to keep it ir was the display for someone else. Shame if you had to give it away. icon_sad.gif

The sugar cubes were really cute. Although I must say that cubes are no longer cubes. I wonder when CSR "uncubed" them and the reaon behind it. Why call them cubes??? icon_rolleyes.gif

I have felt like a voyeur reading all your comments about mixers. I didn't realise there was such a "hoo-ha" about Kitchen Appliances. You guys have spent a few pages just drooling over each others mixers and what colours they are! icon_lol.gif

LISTEN TO YOURSELVES!

(note to self... check out website as posted by jadeleaves and curvy) shhh.gif

And the tea drinking with sugar cubes - isn't that a Russian and Turkish thing to do??

Toni : I think once you have to 10 cakes at once it may as well be 1000.... just like a production line.... As for time to do anything other than the cake/s on hand, my son asked a friend of mine not to order a cake from me because it meant no one would get feed for a week icon_eek.gificon_redface.gif ...not far from the truth....there is good nourishment from cake scraps!!! icon_lol.gif Mind you he is old enough to be self sufficient......18!! punishment .....well I packed him off to the Navy 3 weeks ago icon_lol.gificon_twisted.gificon_lol.gif

Yana: Hero .....no....... Stupid......when I need to be....Insane.....totally!!! I swore I would never make another batch of MMF again....that lasted all of a week!!!

Maria --- thank you icon_redface.gificon_smile.gif I did get to keep the horse...he is currently living in a cardboard box somewhere on a shelf!!!
As for the sugar "rectangles" I didn't realize the shape change before I bought the boxes to display them in....bit of a tight squeeze!!
I have to hide any spares because my two DS's like to just eat them ....yuck!!

Lilis : I buy 15kg bags of Bakels mixes from a cake supply store in Sydney. The Alpine white mix is $78 I use it for White mud, caramel mud WASC etc etc. Here is Bakels ph no : 1300368394 (its on the bag) Maybe they can tell you where to get it in Melb HTH

i have never used a commercial box mix but i love greens cake mixes. I find cake mixes to be easy and fairly foolproof and when i am making something for someone... it wins out every time. I add to it sometimes, rosewater to buttercakes, caramel to chocolate etc etc, just to get something different.

Thanks Fran. I scratch bake and also use cake mixes. I mainly use Greens and Betty Crocket, have tried some white wings.... I'm like you Ginger, I add stuff to the box mixes. I usually go to safeway and coles on Monday mornings and stock up on what's on special. Not sure if it's cheaper to buy it in bulk.

What's everyones opinion on this??? Boxed Vs Scratch cakes????

I would really love an airbrush ! but my first priority is a decent mixer...or 2..if I can't decide which one ! Like someone said previously (sorry can't remember who ),you can never have too many mixers !! icon_lol.gif

It depends on what cake I'm making as to whether I do scratch or not....so many people rave over my choc.fudge cake ( box cake )... icon_wink.gif old family recipe nudge, nudge, wink, wink !!

I just bought a whole stack of choco cake mix from ALDI and mixed in some melted choco buttons into the batter. Turned out really Yum. Apparently the ALDI mix is Greens - but keep this to yourselves - eh??

I once asked a friend of mine that used to buy pancake mix 'why do you buy that ? All it is is flour . you still have to add eggs, and milk so you may as well make it yourself.. Oh she says I didn't realise.

I told her how to make the batter and she now makes it all the time.

So that said, I am a box user of cake mixes.

I love the bakells alpine white mud and choc cake its the best ever, they sell a caramal flavoring you can add to the white choc cake it and it makes a really nice caramal.
It has a great shelf life as well. My boss kept her birthday cake for 10 days b4 she cut it and it was still beautiful.

I have an airbrush, I was so excited to get it but then it sat in the box for almost a year because I couldn't figure out how to use it properly - it had no instructions. I am now at the stage where I can do a plain colour background that looks ok still got a long way to go before I can do anything fancy (I really should practise). It is good for doing bright/dark colours like red and black (the red cake in my photos was done with it).

Bakels... is that a commercial name??? where can I buy their stuff????
The g'boro shop sells bakels RTR which is great but their cake mixes are kinda pricey and you usually need 2 mixes for one cake.

Jules, I use BC choc fudge mix when doing cakes for a special event. It's fail proof and everyone LOVES it. I add raspberries in mine and they cook into the cake. Very yummy and takes the edge off the cake from being too sweet. I always get compliments and I also toe the secret recipe line icon_wink.gificon_wink.gif

On another cake mix note.... does anyone use extenders??? they write about them all the time on here but I'm not too sure about it.

Im so glad this topic came up because I would love to know what extras people add into the box cake mixes. All the other posts about this topic only have the USA products but would be great to know what Aussie products are out there to make cake mixes go further and taste better.

Torki - How far does the 15kg Bakels cake mix go. I make cupcakes and mini cakes. How many do you think you could make from that mix? I wonder if it works out cheaper than buying all the ingredents??

Oh honey_cakes that's a good question I've wondered that if you buy a 15kg mix, does it come with instructions, like, use 4 cups for an 8 inch round pan or whatever, how do you know how much to use? Do they come with other recipes as well?

I've just read that paragraph back I'm serious in my questioning I just thought I'd put a disclaimer in, in case it sounded sarcy which it isn't! icon_biggrin.gif

the 15kg bags come with 1 kg instructions on them.

if you add a can of "caramel Top and fill" 1kg to the mix it makes an awesome caramel mud

that should be add 1 can of caramel top and fill to the 1kg mix.

you use it to replace the water for it eg:
if it asks for 400ml water, measure out the can of caramel and make it up to 400ml with water,,,hope that makes sense!!!

as for air brushes I'm hoping to pick one up in the next couple of weeks... can't wait!!!
