Hi friends... I have decided to make an awareness ribbon cake. It will be for a funeral on Monday. My dear friend lost her battle last Thursday evening. Anyway, the ribbon color is purple for LeioMyoSarcoma. I need dark green roses for the center of the ribbon. My rose making ability is about ZERO!! I bought some RI roses and some forest green petal dust to color them. This is not working. I also have some regular green spray color. If I spray them first, let dry, and then dust ... will that work? I have not used petal dust before.. icon_redface.gif Can you tell?! I don't know how... Thank you for all your help...

I am not sure how that would work as I have never tried it, but I just wanted to send you my sincere condolences for your loss.

I know you said that your rose making ability is NIL, but....have you tried making them using a hershey kiss as the base?? It is SOOOOOOO much easier! I take my flower nail and "glue" w/ frosting a circle of wax paper. Then make a base of frosting to set my hershey kiss on. Then make your rose as were taught. Then I let mine air dry on the wax paper and then when I'm ready to use them just peal them off the paper and use frosting to "glue" them to the cake. I just thought it might help.

Michelle
Try calling Cake Carousel in Richardson and see if they can make the dark green roses for you. Talk to either Jeri or Tammy one of them can probably help you.

Ok then, if the RI roses are just white, you will have trouble getting them to be the dark green that you are looking for.

My suggestion: Spray them black and then use the luster dust once they have dried. Many luster dusts will show off their color much better on a darker surface. If you trust the green spray you can also go in that route, but I would either spray them black or dark brown myself to get the true green of the luster dust.

Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

If you want to try your hand at ribbon roses, they are very easy to do and have a whimsical look.

Are you trying to dust the roses with dry luster dust? If so, try mixing some of the dust with lemon extract to a paint-like consistency first, then paint the roses. You may have better luck that way.

Sorry for your loss. Best wishes to you and the cake.

Well... I just got back from there. Love those ladies.. but I talked to Judy about them making some and she just shook her head. I would have loved to tell them my whole story... but Tammy was really busy.
Maybe I should try to talk to Jeri... she seems a bit friendlier. ( No offense to Judy) That is where I took my classes.
I had even taken a contaner so they could put them in for me to pick up Monday morning on the way to the funeral. oh well... thanks for the great idea.

AND on top of dealing with all of this grief... I managed to sustain a snake bite injury [on Friday] decorating hand!! Piping stars will sure be fun now!

Well.. here is an update. (and I hope I can attach the pictures!) I sprayed the roses with the green color mist. The color of the petal dust was just too dark. I used a cake mix extender recipe... and made whipped buttercream, as well. Boy! That stuff get get soft FAST!! I had never used it before... Lots of firsts with this cake ..... all those stars, piping those outlines, Gracious! When we get to the funeral on Monday, I will place the roses and pipe in a few leaves. I will get pictures of the finished cake for viewing later. Thanks to all for the help and the suggestion..

Try experimenting with one of your roses.

Make a solution of alcohol and gel paste. Dip the rose in the solution and pull it right back out. Let it dry. If it's holding up well to being dipped in the solution, repeat the process until you have the color you need.

Well, the cake was a huge hit with the husband. I am sure the rest of the family are enjoying it this evening after a long, emotional day. I had a lot of problems with the cake .... but, all in all, I am pleased with how it turned out. Thanks again for all of the help. For a full description, look in my pics.
