I've been testing and tasting different fondant products, hoping to find something that I can purchase if I don't feel like making MMF... I have tasted a few from The Cocoa Guy (don't know what the brand is... their special own brand?) and they were pretty good. I really loved the dark chocolate fondant. (Tastes like a tootsie roll... nothing wrong with that!) I also have tried choco-pan white chocolate fondant, and it was pretty good. It's especially good if you are really into the white chocolate flavor. I also tried Satin Ice because of how many people here say how much they like it... but I thought it was terrible. When I opened the package the first thing that hit me was that it smelled exactly like play-doh. I mean a really strong smell! When I tasted it, the only thing I could say was, "It's not as bad as Wilton!" Now, did I get an 'off' batch, or is that pretty much what it smells/tastes like overall? I hate to jump to conclusions, but I also don't want to invest in another tub just to find out that it really does taste like that! TIA for your personal opinion!!
(Note: This is just my personal opinion based on my taste preferences. Please, no one be offended if you like this product!)
I think you probably tried the better tasting products first and because of the hype on it here your expectations were high to begin with.
I don't think it's bad but I haven't tried anything else. Would love to try ChocoPan. Even though I haven't used anything else I don't think it's the best fondant out there.
I haven't tried Fondx yet (but I plan to soon), but I also think satinice smells like play doh, but tastes more like marshmallow. I love the workability of the satinice though, but from what I read here fondx is pretty good in taste and workability. I've also read that Chocopan is a little difficult to work with (gets too soft?). and a n y t h i n g .. (including playdoh) tastes better than wilton fondant.
Melvira give Fondx a try, my understanding is they will send you free samples. I am not really a fondant eater, mainly because of the chewy texture, but Fondx smells wonderful when you first open it and I thnk it actually tastes quite nice. It is wonderful to work with, no tearing, or elephant skin. It rolls easily and goes on beautifully.
I have used Satin Ice in Black and in Blue, the black smells wonderful, not really a licorice scent, but something good. The blue was kind of neutral, just kind of sweet.
For dark chocolate I have found I like Pettinice, it too has a tootsie roll flavor and it rolls beautifully.
I only use Satin Ice. It tastes really good to me and have only had Good reactions from using it. I do not think it smells anything like play-doh. ( I have a 3 and 5 yr old and am very familiar with that smell LOL) I really like the taste of the Dark Chocolate satin ice.
I really like the Satin Ice. Absolutely love doing cookies and covering w/satin ice and royal icing to decorate.
I've used SatinIce, Pettinice, white rolled chocolate fondant from Caljava (Sweet Inspirations brand). I've purchased FondX and Chocopan but have not tried them yet. I've also purchased the Massa Grischuna fondant from Albert Uster Imports but haven't tried it yet either.
I used the white rolled chocolate fondant (Sweet Inspirations) yesterday and once in Feb-Mar and it's beginning to be my least favorite: became too pliable and soft. However, it was raining and humid but the A/C is on? The taste is great though.
My personal favorite thus far is the Pettinice. Even on humid days it comes through for me. It's easy to work with and stays where you put it. It's not quite as sweet-tasting as the SatinIce in my opinion. I'm looking forward to comparing Pettinice with the FondX and Chocopan.
Good Luck Melvira! I'm with you on trying new things and trying to find a fondant that is appealing to others as well as myself.
Well, it sounds like I may have gotten an off batch, so perhaps I will try it again. This batch is really unpleasant!
Barbend, I loved the comment about having 2 kids and being familiar with that smell!! hahaha! ![]()
I will definitely look into Fondx and see what I think of that. I absolutely love the taste of my homemade MMF, but I have had some serious problems with it in trying to cover cakes. It may just be the humidity but I've had lots of rips and elephant skin! ERGH!!!
I have a very important cake coming up and want it to be perfect!!
Thank you all for your input, I am always hesitant to say a product sucks until I've tried it a few times and get some feedback from others to see if they have the same problem!
Hey Melvira,
I'm a Satin Ice girl too. I love it! If I don't have time to make a batch of MMF (or I'm too lazy to make it) I get Satin Ice (I've been very lazy for the past 6 months... that's all I've used LOL). The smell is more like pure powdered sugar to me. Nice & sweet. I like the way it rolls out & it isn't as heavy as MMF or Wilton fondant. I love the way you can work it with your fingers. Very nice & smooth. I've used red, black, blue, yellow, white, green, orange, pink. It's sooo much better then coloring myself. ![]()
You always make me laugh Melvira!! ![]()

I'd love to be baking a cake along side you!! ![]()

Melvira, sometimes I get that smell from it also but not a bad taste. I dont like anything too sweet anyway so Im not a fan of buttercream or fondant. But most people that do eat the stuff says its the better tasting and I definetly love the way it rolls out and never have a problem with it. Chocopan white and dark both taste ok, the dark one does taste like a tootsie rolls, but the only problem Ive had is with humidity with it. Last Sept. I made a Coach handbag cake for my friend and the stuff was just dripping off of it by the time I got it to her. And that was the third attempt of covering it. It does not hold up well in heat. Also, you can see a two Food Network Challenges with the professionals having problems with it. One was with Norm Davis, and the other was most recently with Collette Peters. (that was the one where she couldnt move the cake onto the judging table and Bronwen got everyone together to help her move it). So I figure if THEY have problems with it, then whats to say a person with my little experience going to have?!
i haven't really done much fondant work... but i have never bought it before until recently.. it was a store brind from a cake supply store... it wasn't good.. had no stretch. i have always made my own fondant... i add a little marshmellow flavoring, and a little butter flavoring and it tastes awsome. i don't like fondant's texture but i would eat this... the recipe i use has really great stretch and workability.. i make a big batch and can save it for a month or 2.
I love the taste of Satin Ice... usually.
I am just speculating here because I don't know that this is absolutely the reason but it seems that when it is stored at temps above 85*, it can turn pretty foul. Our shop gets really hot and it costs too much to keep the air on every day (especially if we aren't working that day) so we had been turning it off for a couple of days at a time and them temps in our shop have reached 90*+.
We opened a bucket of Satin Ice we had used previously and found that it tasted almost as bad as Wilton, it smelled awful too. We opened a brand new 20lb bucket... same thing. Another 20lb bucket... yep, bad too.
It is possible that somewhere before getting to you that the Satin Ice you are using was exposed to heat, or that it was a bit past it's prime.
We actually encounted the same issue with Satin Ice last summer, but for the other 8 months out of the year it was great. At the time we thought it was just a bad batch but since the same thing happened this year I think it is likely a heat issue and we will be storing unused buckets in a cooler place from now on.

YES!! Oh, I hope that is it!!! One Godforsaken delivery man in our area throws the packages from the truck onto our porch and burns out of here like his fanny is on FIRE!! He doesn't knock to let you know he has delivered, so it's possible that it had been sitting on my deck in 90 degree weather for up to 4 hours (probably only 2)!! GRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!! Why is he like that?!!? I am a paying customer, I deserve the courtesy of a little knock, don't I? I am not kidding about this... I was washing dishes one day and saw the truck pull up, I literally RAN to the back door... like 10 feet from where I was. By the time I got there, the package was on my deck and the truck was so far gone that I could not see him either way down the street! That is ridiculous! But that's only one of the guys. I hate to sound so critical... the other guys are friendly and courteous!
Love Satin Ice - it's never smelled or tasted like playdough to me (not that I would know what playdough tasted like!) and i've never had a complaint from a customer. It's also the easiest i've tried to work with.
Debbie
It does have a distinct smell, I don't think playdoh though because it smells sweeter than that. And Playdoh isn't sweet. Trust me. ![]()
But I'm fine with the taste. I abhor Wilton's, got tired of making MMF (lazy like TC lol) and SatinIce is the 3rd I've tried. I did get the FondX samples and I was pleased but haven't ordered anything yet. SatinIce does roll out nicely so it's fine for now. But I want to try others at some point. I just don't use it much at this point.
Melvira:
Any problems with the ChocoPan? I'm having a terrible time right now trying to cover a cake with it!
Real, real soft, tearing and ripping before I can cover the cake with it. Have I kneaded it too much? (I did add color to it) The directions said to use powdered sugar on the work surface - which I did instead of Crisco like used with the other types of fondant.
Not to take over your thread but I was just wondering what to do about it? Thought you might could help!
I'm about ready to break out some Pettinice or some SatinIce and start over. Need to have the cake covered by this evening......
Thanks!
interesting -- and my first reaction was -- marshmallow.
once again -- just goes to prove that everyone's taste and smell buds are different.
ditto...
I swear by it...taste and texture...so smooth and easy to work with.
Funny thing, however, when I opened a new bucket today...for the first time I smelled a strong plastic-like odor. It tasted and looked fine...perhaps it has something to do with the summer heat and the plastic liner?
Well...my 2 cents on Satin Ice...
I was EXTREMELY happy to have found a cake supply store not too far from me that carried another fondant besides Wilton's!
When I got home...my brother said it smelled like play-doh. I kind of thought so too! I tasted it...it didn't really taste bad...but I thought it would taste better.
And for being so expensive (compared to making my own regular fondant)... ![]()
Well, I ran out of it (I just bought the smallest tub), and so for the cake I was making (it was my daughter's) I had 2 tiers covered in Satin Ice, and the top tier in my homemade fondant - people said that the top tier's fondant tasted better than the other two! ![]()
But I did like how easy it was to work with compared with my homemade fondant.
Maybe you should try some other brands out there.....Good luck!![]()
After reading this thread, I walked over to my pantry and checked on my tub of Satin Ice. I can understand the comments about "playdoh" because for me it had a slight scent of playdoh but also a strong sweetness. I tasted it and it tastes great- nothing like playdoh!
My first time using fondant, I used Wilton and mixed in clear vanilla and melted white chocolate. Some people actually liked it!
Then I used MMF, and a lot of people liked it, but some found it to be too sweet.
I recently received free samples (small packets) from the Chocolate Outlet: Fondx- really good, 2nd to Satin Ice. They also sent White Chocolate, Rasberry and Chcolate- they were sooo good!
I've also tried Bakels Pettinence- pretty good as well. But it softened quite a bit with the warmth of my hands.
