And now I am hyperventalating. I went to pick up a spray of calla lillies I need for a cake tomorrow, and stupidly, I didn't get a price quote before hand because how expensive could 9 calla lillies be? $96.00!!!!!!!!!! HOLY **%###!!!** !!!
WHat an expensive lesson learned. As soon as I can gain control of myself I need to go finish the cake.
Just needed to vent to someone who would be sympathtic.
Thanks.
Wow! What size were they and what part of the country are you in? The wholesale mini callas I bought for my daughter's wedding recently was $2.95 each in the midwest. Have to wonder what their mark up is, don't you? I guess I'd nearly throw up on the florist too!
I love cala lilies and wanted them for my wedding flower....until I learned they were $10 a stalk retail.....changed my mind real quick!
As Doug stated I have it in my contract that if fresh flowers are requested for a cake, it's the bride's responsibility to finalize the order and pay the florist bill. I will speak w/ the florist about the cake and sizes, etc., but then I call the bride and tell her what we discussed, give her a couple of options and SHE calls to confirm the order!
I FEEL FOR YOU A LADY DESIDE TO CANCEL A WEDDING CAKE BECASE I TOLD HER THAT I WOULD NOT BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FLOWERS.
SORRY FOR THAT TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE BUT HEY IS WHAT YOU LEARN FROM THIS TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE THAT WILL HELP YOU NEXT TIME ![]()

10 extra large gumpaste calla lilies from www.discountsugarflowers.com is only $12.59 - I thought sugar flowers are generally more expensive than fresh flowers.
Has anyone used this company and are the prices okay? TIA

I have. I needed gumpaste flowers that I took on a 20-hour plane ride. Not knowing how to pack mine properly, I thought if I ordered from them (in CA) and they can get to me intact (in FL), they will be ok to take on the long plane ride. I was right. They were packed really well - boxes with dividers for each flower, each slot with a paper backing supporting the flower, foam and bubble wrap padding on top and bottom. I took 4 boxes with 100 flowers and none broke. ![]()
Thanks for the info on the flowers website! I've bookmarked it for later use
They are really inexpencive!!!! I was so shocked! ![]()
That's pretty cheap compared to around here.
My boss is getting married next weekend and wanted 3 of them for her bouquet, nothing fancy, and the florist was charging her $80...for just 3!! She is also paying $2,000 for her floral package also. I think that's ridiculous, but I'm not a "flower' kinda person to spend that much on something that's gonna die in a few days
My grandmother is a florist... and just to let you know, thats actually not a bad price. Here in Louisiana she pays 12 a piece wholesale. They're very beautiful, but also very expensive. I make gumpaste calla's all the time though. They are VERY easy to make!

I have used them as well and was very pleased just like miriel. The flowers on my sunflower and daisies cake came from them. They arrived in perfect condition and looked great!
Like Muriel, I have ordered from Discount Sugar Flowers and been very pleased. The flowers have arrived promptly and and intact. People who are expert at making flowers can make more refined examples of gumpaste work but for anyone like me they are fantastic and inexpensive.
I couldn't manage to see any of the flowers on that site. I clicked and nothing.
Did you try scrolling over? When I clicked, I expected a large image of a flower to pop up somewhere. Finally, I realized the flowers were displayed on a cake and I had to scroll right to see them. HTH
The callies were mini's and I thought the ugliest ones I have ever seen, but maybe I am used to the bigger ones. The cake was a freebe for a lady who runs a big event cordinating business and saw my work at a show and asked if I would like to do her wedding cake for a free booth at the fall bridal show ($395 value), now a $295 value!
). Which is why I didn't bother to get a price quote. I had no idea flowers were so expensive, but I am no longer going to feel bad for what I charge for a cake when people will pay that for flowers!!
StepOnmi- Thanks!
Miriel- Thanks for the site address. I always thought sugar were more expensive too.
Here's a picture of the cake, it's kinda hard to see the flowers.

yet another good reason to put in contract that if bride wants fresh flowers on the cake....
SHE, not the decorator, has to make the arrangements and pay the bill.
Me, too. I don't even pick them up. If they florist can't leave them at the reception site, then he has to deliver them to my place (like the guy did today for my wedding today).
That's why I had artificial flowers at my wedding! ![]()

Who wants to pay that much for something that you just look at and then it dies in two days. At least cake keeps on giving - there's the taste, it's something to go with coffee or milk, it gives you a sugar boost, etc.
Anyway, your cake is lovely. I would have called the lady and offered her the sugar/gp calla lilies. But that's just me - I could never spend that much on a few flowers.
