I wouldn't refund anything! She didn't specify size or design...she should be learning her lesson...not you!
I think the cake looks great and if someone called me and wanted a cake to feed 20 I would have made the same size you did!
Then she should have been more specific.
Like size , color and all that. The cake is very pretty.
I would not take another order from that person ever again.
You can put her
in your ignore list .
Denise2434: It was hard to read your post because Matthew (your avatar) kept looking at me and I couldn't concentrate.

I hope that he made you feel some better! ![]()
suttle...I think your cake is beautiful!!! I'm sorry for you going through that too. Makes you wonder about people!!!!
I think you guys are awesome decorators!!! Keep em' coming!!!!
BTW Denise, You have a beautiful name too!!!!
Hugs, ~Denise
so she then wants to haggle with me on the price. How about 15 because I really don't like the color. Being the wimp that I was at the time... we agreed on 20 dollars. Which is bad... but oh it gets better.
She calls me two days later to say that while the cake was very good, she didn't care for the filling and would like 5 dollars returned.
I am in jaw-dropping shock here! There are actually two people in the world who are that ignorant?
I'm sorry this happened to you! I think the cake is gorgeous! Others have stated - you ALWAYS have something in mind, even if you say do whatever. Why is it so hard for people to BE SPECIFIC! That way there's no room for interpretation, error, etc.
Who returns a perfectly good cake? I could understand if you were allergic, or it was moldy, but it's very pretty, and would have been fine for 20 people. If she was so adamant about not having left overs, why is she questioning the size? I don't get that!
To keep her from giving you any bad press, I'd refund her money, less your costs - although, it would irk me to no end! I don't think people deserve a refund on something, unless it was bad. "It's too girlie for me" -well, then you should have stated you didn't want flowers, of what have you! Ugh - people are rude! Now I'm fired up - who's this lady??? LOL
Keep your chin up, and know that your work is beautiful. Others, with taste and class, know this, and appreciate your hard work!
I wouldn't refund anything. If you got a pizza delivered do you think you could phone the pizza place and say "I don't want it now give me my money back". Sorry about her luck but she did accept the cake by taking it home. I should have been refused up front. I would not refund her any money as the cake was done to her specifics by leaving it totally up to you. She probably did like the cake but being a coworker of your husband she thought she would get a beautiful cake at a minimal cost. The cake you made is beautiful and would definitely feed 20 people.
Did she actually return the cake to you? I couldn't tell from your post whether or not she did. It actually sounds to me like she didn't. If that's the case, then I definitely would not have given her a penny back. I wouldn't have even refunded her a penny if she HAD given me the cake back, because like others said, who returns a cake that has nothing wrong with it?!?! Customers like that just burn me up. ![]()
Your cake was absolutely beautiful. I'm sorry that you had to go through this. ![]()
who returns a cake that has nothing wrong with it?!?!
People who thought they were getting a different size cake than they got? (Did the customer see the cake when she picked it up?)
It's a lovely cake but I don't see it as enough for 20 people and I can understand why the customer didn't either.
I am in jaw-dropping shock here! There are actually two people in the world who are that ignorant?
There are more than 2 believe me. I have a restaurant and i have come to the conclusion that you open your doors the the public and there is bound to be a few nutjobs/losers wander in. Last night I had this lady order a cream based pasta and a pizza, when I go to clear the table I notice there is about 1/3-1/2 to Pasta left and asked was everything ok. She says oh it was too creamy (duh its a cream pasta sauce) and she thinks maybe she might be lactose intolerant although she just about licked the plate on the garlic prawns in CREAM sauce she had for entree or it could be she's 1/2 Italian and just sick of italian food as she ate so much of it growing up (Then why come to an italian restaurant
) apparently she didn't like the pizza either but her husband ate every last crumb of it. Normally I would offer a discount etc if people aren't happy but I thought nope you got exactly what you ordered so I charged them full price - they paid it but I saw her looking at the bill very carefully so I just smiled and said have a good evening.[/quote]
your dh should have given her the 10 dollars back and not 20. People who dont' bake don't know what goes into the baking and decorating cakes. She should have stated what she wanted from the get go. Maybe she thought you would not charge her for it.

The bottom line is that the customer did not specify a cake size when she ordered. She said that she wanted a cake for 20 people, and Cyndi1207 used her best judgment to make a cake for that number. She said that the cake was 4 layers, which I believe is plenty for 20 people. I do not think that is a good enough reason to request a refund.

Well, the Wilton site says that a single layer 8"x3" cake would yield 20 party servings. Earlene Moore's site says that it would feed 15. I see this cake as being no less than 8"x4" up to 8"x8", so it should feed 20 people party sized servings--with NO leftover cake, as required by the buyer.

As for what happened to the cake.......the girl lives about 30 minutes away from us and so my Dh told her (after he okayed it with me of course) to drop it off at the restaurant so they could enjoy it there. I have a bunch of friends that work there that actually called me during their shift to let me know how pretty and delicious it was. I just told them to let the girl who didn't want it know. As for how many slices.....well......they're savages. They didn't even slice it.....they just went at it with forks. However......I know it was plenty enough to feed 20 people.
Suttle.......even though it really sucks for these things to happen.......it's nice to know that I'm not the only one who has gone through this.
Thanks....to those of you who were supportive of me......I really appreciate it.
Well, I'm glad to hear that some appreciative people got to enjoy your beautiful cake!! I think we've all had customers who SUCK!! There are mean people out there, and unfortunately even with something as sweet as cake, the ugliness comes out. Just keep making your wonderful cakes. Those rotten eggs are few and far between.
OH FOR F***SAKES, people like that should really not inhabit the earth ![]()
That is just plain ignorant- I've run across so many people like that over the years who just try and weasle their way into a good deal or a freebie- the restaurant cream sauce story included.
Does she have the maturity of a flea or what? You dont hold onto some food item that has already been prepared/made for 2 days and then finally decide you dont want it. NOBODY is that friggin ignorant. Well ok apparently so!
) (can ya tell I had a lovely day at work lmao)
A) Chalk it up to experience- so next time you know most importantly if the lady ever asks again you can tell her she'll have to shop somewhere else.
B) Chalk it up to experience, that when you do business like that, and someone says 'free for all do what you want' you have to push it as was mentioned a few times. I don't have experience with this in the cake department but this comes up all the time in my line of work. Even if it means sitting down with the person (INSISTING UPON IT) and offering a couple of choices- ok chocolate or fruit filling. Etc. THEN.....you cover your bases and stick to your guns when you deliver AFTER they sign on the dotted line for the order. And if they try and pull a STUPID IGNORANT LAME TOTALLY IGNORANT did I say IGNORANT LOL stunt like that, then you say sorry, we agreed upon this this and this and this is what I'm giving you. Had you mentioned a preference when I asked you I would have gladly given you what you wanted. I can't do anything with this cake now- had you mentioned upon delivery that it wasnt satisfactory, I would have sat down with you to work something out. But you took this home for a day and it's not like I can go sell it to someone else (food safety reasons if an asswipe like her needs a reason LOL (in the instance of some DIPSHIT thinking it's possibly to RETURN a cake HAHAHAHA OMG I'm still laughing after reading 3 pages of posts- shaking head as well lol). I know because I worked in restaurants where people tried to get discounts because they said such and such didnt taste right, but uh yeah if you had taken 2 bites and then pushed it away, sure, but you finished most of the bloody meal. Sorry.
C) I forgot what C was, I'm still so flabberghasted. Oh and too late now obviously, but I agree that you since you did take it back, you should have given it to DH to bring to work and have all the other coworkers SMEAR her face in it (figuratively) how great it was.
Seriously people like that should be shot (figuratively LOL) <>still shaking head>
By the way? I love the cake. It's absolutely gorgeous. And as to size, I cant comment as I am ignorant still as to sizing pieces LOL
Seriously that has 'weasle' all over it. Nobody with any sense or propriety or sincerely finding something wrong with the cake (ie finding a bug in it or a hair or it being not what they asked for - like I asked for chocolate and this is strawberry) would have kept it that long. If they DID find something legitimately wrong with it then they would have specified as such, that say they bit into it or blablabla. This is just another stinker trying to get a freebie or a deal. SLIME SLIME SLIME. Condolences to your DH for having to work with her. LOL
oceanspitfire, you are cracking me up. I am LMAO reading your posts!!!!! ![]()

So sorry for your experience......the cake truly was lovely. I would not have refunded any money. You spent your time and cost of materials and delivered the product she ordered. Let anyone try to purchase a cake, take it home, then decide to take it back to the store/bakery.....do you think they would have gotten a refund? But, as we have all done....sometimes we just have to chalk it up to experience.....and I would NEVER sell her another cake.
ugh, people can be soo annoying. just fyi for servings, i just made an 8" 3" deep cake for my mom, and we counted up pieces, and it would have served 14 very ample cake slices (we like cake) so i really think that should have fed 20, especially if she's saying NO leftovers, i'm picturing a bunch of prissy girls sitting around saying "give me a small piece without a lot of icing"
so in their case, it probably would have fed 30 of 'em.
i'm picturing a bunch of prissy girls sitting around saying "give me a small piece without a lot of icing"
ROFLMAO - I can totally picture it!! My only suggestion would be to include a cutting guide in the future. Personally I don't like cutting an 8 inch per cutting guide instructions. I prefer to cut wedges in which case I get 16, and a 4 inch cake would give you a hardy serving at that, but most people will look at a cake that size (even if it were higher) and only think to cut in wedges.
The cake by the way was beautiful and I agree with everyone here, you shouldn't have refunded anything because she got exactly what she asked for. I've gotten orders from dh before where they weren't specific and I always send him back with questions to ask even if it's a choice between two things. I don't like free reign unless I know the person is easy going!
Oceanspitfire, I definitely want to stay on your good side....LOL!! I agree with everything you said though. I have a picture of this gal in my head too and I'm seeing a pretty spoiled bunch picking apart a perfectly delicious cake. Anyway my vote is with the no refund and NEVER do business with her again.
Yah too bad dh didn't just get it back and take it to work. I'd have liked hearing about that later on. Oh well chalk it up to people being people and keep on baking.
OH FOR F***SAKES, people like that should really not inhabit the earth

OK, now let's not sugar-coat it! Say what you really feel! LOL
Amazing the attitude of some people. If she doesn't like a cake from WallyWorld, do you think they'd let her return it? NO they would not. Just because we are private bakers doesnt mean we should have to accept back a cake that she took home. What did she think you were going to do with it once you got it back. I, personally, would be a bit afraid to eat it at that point. who knows what happened to it between the time she took it and the time she brought it back.
The cake is beautiful. My daughter would have loved it and she "Ain't a girly Girl" as she tells me all the time.
hummmmmmmmmmmm, she ordered a cake to feed 20 people and didn't want extra cake....then decided that the cake you made for her wouldn't be big enough and she didnt' want to use it because it was even too girlie..
I think .....she ate the whole dammed thing herself!
pffft on that...
NEVER, EVER return any money!!! She can't return the cake, give people a "certificate" for "so much off" on the next order. after all you put the work into the cake.
Now, If she had brought back the cake..( and you then THROW it away...).then and only THEN would I even give people a % off on the next order....( then always be over booked and unable to make the cake.... hahaahah!)
What! She actually took it home, and then called and said she didn't want the cake after all.....no,no,no...She can't just take a cake home then change her mind. Thats plum ridiculous! I would have to refuse the refund if it were me. She should have given you specifics. I looked at the cake and it is gorgeous and looks like it would feed 20 people to me!
