[LOL CarolAnn, no worries, we've already determined, havent we, that the woman and that other person mentioned in a previous post were the only 2 people I would have given the Darwin Award to LOL
TheVienneaus- well the subject is cake, I'm supposed to sugar coat (hehe sorry that was lame lmao)
ok my new evaluation- is that the cake would have made one serving (can ya guess where it would fit? LOL) ok I'm totally joking seriously- it was just the day I had there that made me say those things LOL. Although I still would have said those things, just maybe a bit more nicely ![]()
I work in a sushi bar PT- I would just burst out laughing and scare everyone else behind the counter if someone came up and returned some sushi and they wouldnt know why I was laughing so hard (cause I'd be thinking about this story lol)
the size of the serving shouldn't vary. if people want larger serving sizes, they need to order larger cakes. I price by serving - and I am clear as to homw many serving a particular cake has. if they want to get larger pieces, they have to order a larger ake and pay more accordingly.
You could tell something was wrong with her when she said "no extra cake left". Who doesn't want leftover cake?!?!!!!!
no kidding eh? I've NEVER EVER seen anyone throw extra cake away lol why that would be cake abuse LOL
You could tell something was wrong with her when she said "no extra cake left". Who doesn't want leftover cake?!?!!!!!
Cheers to that! Shouldn't you always order cake so there's enough left over for like 3 DAYS?!
Some people!
I'm going to be really frank.... that takes balls! And not the good kind either! ![]()
To return a perfectly lovely cake...let alone one that you bought from someone you know, it's hideaous! If it was dreadful looking.... or dry...even then I would be reluctant to comment, let alone actually return the darn thing! Whew - I would have hit the roof
I would say she is a MAJOR cheapskate and found one cheaper. I wouldn't have given her a dime! Especially if she left with it....
you are a kind and patient woman ![]()
My goodness... Your cake is soooo pretty.
She definitely lost.
Keep up your hard and creative job!
WOW! That is soo ridiculous! That cake was soo beautiful! You did an amazing job on it. For someone to return it because it wasn't going to feed enough people is just absurd. I've never heard of such a thing! Where else is she going to get a cake that looks like that?? Sounds like she has some issues!!!
I just got a call someone wants me to make them a cake and when they asked how much it would be I said probably around $30. I've decided to start my cakes at this price because even if your making a small cake with all the time and ingredients you lose money if you charge anything less! I find that the customers that have given me the most grief over pricing are the ones who have the most money!!!!! Go figure! Some people are just crazy.
Don't think about this anymore or lose sleep over it. You are an amazing decorator and this woman is just ridiculous! Keep up the great work! ![]()
Where is she going to find a cake made specially for her including those daisies painted by hand for $30? I would have given her nothing! That's why I have been rejecting orders lately. People are better off going directly to the bakery or supermarket and buy a cheap cake made out of a mix and slappyly decorated. She should have used your cake for display and buy another one to compensate for the needed one.
First of all, I saw the cake you made, and there was NOTHING wrong with it! It was adorable!
Second, I have discovered that the majority of people do NOT know how to cut and serve cake PROPERLY! I know before I took decorating classes, neither did I! I would ALWAYS cut a slice a round cake in the traditional wedges...it wasn't until my Wilton instructor taught us how to PROPERLY cut a cake! The directions on how to slice a tiered cake is ALWAYS in the back of the Wilton Year Books. Whenever I make a tiered cake for someone, I ALWAYS include a picture of how to PROPERLY cut the cake to get the desired amount of slices out of it! The reaction is always the same..." I had NO idea that's how you are supposed to cut a cake!" When I figure out how large to make a cake for someone, I go by the charts in the back of the book that tells you how many servings for each size pan you should get. I then pass this along to the customer so they KNOW that this cake they are getting is TRULY the correct size. If they choose to make their serving sizes larger, than it's not YOUR fault!
Personally, I do not sell cake to people I know. They think it should be cheaper because I'm a friend, I should get a bigger because I'm a friend, you charge extra for fondant? for a friend? And if they don't pick it up, well, you like to bake, and you had fun making it, right? And I have to pay you ahead of time? You know I'm good for it....... Nope, no cake for you, I'm booked from people who see me as a professional.
OMG OMG OMG, I feel your pain hun, I have to deal with peeps like that all the time.
For instance, we did this one cake (the lady had absolutely no imagination whatsoever), It was a full sheet (18x24) and all they wanted on it was, Happy Anniversary and a border. No sprinkles, no flowers no nuttin just that. Now, unfortunately, as we all know, sometimes we get ahead of ourselves when we are writing on a cake, well to make a long story short, the girl who wrote on the cake forgot the last "r" in anniversary. The cake was picked up and paid for and we thought all was hunky dory. Now, get this, two days (yes, I said 2 days) later. The lady calls up havin a purple cow (sheesh) She is all bent out of shape because of the missing "r". (Gawd, it was an ugly cake anyway), and demands action. Well, as the bakery dept manager, I took the call... Needless to say she ended up with a "free" cake. I at first told her we could take off 5 bucks, but she wouldn't hear that she demanded full refund (gawd, some people) and beings I work where I work we can't ever bar her from ordering a cake from us again (I wish I could bar freeloaders, and that's exactly what they are; freeloaders).
So, I feel your pain, and even though that cake wasn't even close to as beautiful one as yours, it still was money out of mine and my bakeries pocket, all because of one stupid "r". Oh, yeah, they did eat the darn thing and then brought the receipt back for a full refund.
Gawd, I hate giving away cake.
p.s. we didn't know about the "typo" til the lady called.

I wish you could have just wrote an "r" in icing and send it to her "Here's your missing "r". But, that was a mistake on the part of your business that shouldn't have happened. Maybe a discount off her next cake would have been acceptable.
I had to write "DYNOMITE" on a cake. (yes, that's the way they wanted it spelled, it's part of a cheer.) In order to center it, I had the bright idea of writing the word starting with the middle letter and going from right to left to right until I had all the letters in ... I got mixed up and ended up spelling ""DYNONITE. I didn't notice it until I got my pictures back from developing! I called the customer and apologized. I offered her $10 off her next cake for the mistake. She, luckily, was very nice. She said that she was able to break the middle line of the N in half and turn it into an M herself. She even sent me a picture of the cake with the corrected word. She never did order another cake, though, and get her $10 off!
I did offer her a discount. She didn't want just a a discount she wanted the darn thing for free.
The nerve some people have!!!
That cake was only $30? Wow. It is a pretty cake and not too girly. Kinda reminds me of a pond with the lilly pads and flowers. I know they are daisies ![]()
So next time someone orders a cake and say's "oh do whatever you want " I would say....I am sorry but unless I have specifics I cannot accept your order. Tell them you could never assume to know what they like because they are a complete individual with different tastes. Show them some pics, flavor offerings, types of icings available , size etc. It might even behoove us to have wooden or styrofoam cutouts that show the size of slices we are talking about. That gives someone a visual and if they want bigger slices then you tell them they need a bigger cake size.
I am amazed at the audacity of some people. They want something for nothing. I know Wally world and the likes of them are inexpensive but people have given up quality for quantity and price. We need to go back to the days when quality meant something and you stood behind your product. There are no free lunches ....or CAKES.
As for the lady that ordered the religious cake...but didn't like the yellow icing color....well tough s**t... She should have specified colors, flavors etc. I hope I don't offend anyone but "bible thumpers " like her give religion a bad name.
Never compromise on your price!
Hmmm I'm the type to tell people to "surprise me" and I genuinely mean it. Don't you have a contract or something that sets forth some guidelines (IE., if you don't provide enough information about what you want, I will endeavor to create a cake especially for you, and if it's not quite what you wanted there will be no refunds, as you chose to leave the decision up to me) ![]()
The only way I can see money being returned on a cake, would be if there were specifics and they weren't followed.
