I thought that blue roses did exist. I guess I need to do some research. Anyway, I have a baptism cake for a boy in a few weeks & the mother requested blue roses. I tried to talk her into white/ivory, but she wants blue. I not talking light blue, more teal blue. Anyway, she's a paying customer, & she will get her request. Who cares even if it's not realistic, there's a lot of cakes I've seen with blue roses that are just beautiful!
Just my 2 cents.
Absolutely, I have put blue roses on several paid ckes, include a wedding cake. I would not make blue roses out of gumpaste and put them in a competition, but that is a completely different issue. Do whatever your customer wants. "The customer is always right".
JUst another vote with the majority on this. WHY would it make a decorator "not credible"? I'm not following the logic .... or the lack of? ![]()
To me this sounds like some idea he/she got in his/her head for some unknown reason. Had a friend who had one of those ideas that he picked up god knows where. He about DIED when he saw his wife putting mustard on a hamburger .... because "the rule" is ketchup on a hamburger and mustard on a hot dog. Period.
Sounds to me like the instructor is a control freak with a black or white viewpoint on lots of things and "no blue roses" is one of them. Giving credit to another CC'er for this quote, but as Bugs Bunny would say, "What a ma-roooon!"
Here's a link to that blue rose. It's absolutely GEORGEOUS. I did red white and blue roses on a cake for my aunt (birthday near the 4th of july). Go for it.

Incase the link doesn't work I'll add the picture.

They do. See previous posts with wikepedia links. ![]()
Yay! Thanks ladies.
Don't get me wrong, I love my instructor...she's awesome. But we got going last week on blue roses and I thought it was funny. When I decided to do this cake in white with red and blue roses I got to laughing so hard I nearly fell off my chair...I just can't wait to see the look on her face when I whip out these blue roses!
Thanks again!!!
I'm so glad you posted this because I took a class with Kim Morrison and she said the same thing about losing credibility for doing blue roses. She said she turns down brides all the time because all they want are blue roses and she refuses to do them. I thought it was silly then and I'm so glad I'm not the only one that thinks this is a bit ridiculous.
Also, I was looking through one of my dad's gardening magazines and they do have blue roses. I think there are even a few different varieties. The one I saw was called Blue Moon or something, but it was beautiful and I thought I would love to do this for a cake. I almost emailed Kim to tell her![]()
At Johnson and Wales I was told that you should never put blue on a cake b/c it isn't a color of any natural food...but I think its all in what the customer wants. I am not going to lose business b/c of something silly. GO BLUE!
Well, I just made a wedding cake for a customer, and she wanted Blue, Pink and Lavender roses in pastels.

Guess I lost "credibility" but got paid pretty well for it.
What's the big deal? Blue, orange, pink, red with polka dot roses, what difference does it make? Why do people have to be so literal with things? Life is hard enough - why do you have to take something fun and put a downward spin on it? Sorry - that just irks me. I had a Wilton instructor that was a bit of a downer too - nice enough, but weird, and very critical. I think I've learned more from this site than I did in her classes - but, this isn't about me, right?
I would never tell someone that I wouldn't do a color of flower because it doesn't appear in nature - who cares? Hey, and we all know what it's like to not want to spend money on just another thing for class. For one of my classes, I mixed a bunch of different colors for my roses - it was almost a terra cotta, and albeit, not the prettiest, it was really the flower I was needing work on, not my color choices. LOL
GO BLUE!

I had to laugh when I saw this because last week when we made the fondant covered square cake I used up all of my leftover icing from my friends scooby cake (it's in my gallery). It was interesting to say the least and got a few strange looks but I just couldn't justify leaving it in the fridge to go to waste and making an entirely new batch...only to cover it up!
Maybe this is why most men will not let you put roses on their cake, unless they are blue ones. Since blue roses don't exist ....they aren't really getting roses on their cake, it just looks that way. What if someone wants you to put a pink horse on a cake...is that wrong also?
ok I chose no on the poll but in reading the posts and seeing the pics I am not sure why I wouldn't... i agree the blue flowers are lovely..... I especially love the one with butterflies.... I didn't read the posters name, I will give you props in a minute! But hey it is gorgeous!
ok my props go to merissa... beautiful blue roses! Gorgeous cake!
They DO exist!! Yes, we want to hear more how it has anything to do with credibility. Would you find out?
I love blue roses. My niece wanted blue tip roses for her bridal cake and I asked if there was really such a thing, and she says, yes, she has seen it and touched it.
Hmmm - you brought this up, I think we would like to hear about the credibility part.
I'm an instructor, and I also agree w/ Doug that we can make cakes to try to represent the real thing or plunge into the whimsical world, and tell that instructor to keep to the Wilton way.
Go for it. Not to mention it's your cake not your instructors.
My neighbor actually planted black roses in her yard. There are so many different varieties of roses who knows what you can find. I would love to have blue roses in my yard. They were very pretty.
What I think is most funny is this class, from what I am inferring would be the fondant/gum paste class where they teach the fondant rose...and also the fantasy flower. Fantasy...huh.... ![]()

Blue isn't a color or any natural food? What about BLUEBERRIES!!! I agree that this is just silly. I think alot of it is coming from decorators who have been around for a while and that is what they were told and nothing will change their minds! ![]()

uhhh...last time I checked blueberries are only blue on their skins...once you pop them open aren't they pretty purple??
Oh by the way - sure I've made blue roses for cakes, especially for Memorial Day when for the custard shop I made several with wreaths of red, white and blue roses crowning the tops. Sometimes your color choices need to transcend reality! I say go for it! ![]()

Or the Easter Bunny for that matter
heck since HE is just a fantasy...better not put HIM on a cake either!!!
sorry to anyone on the board who still thought the Easter Bunny was real ![]()
