I chose yes on the poll because I am a business and the bride (or any customer) is always right even if she wants blue roses cascading from the starship enterprise parked on a yin yang floating on a sea of fire. Say it with me people: "Sounds beautiful!"

BUT I heard the same thing in my culinary schooling, there really isn't anything blue and it is unattractive to the eye as something you are going to eat. Our piping practice icing had to be bright blue so that no one would be tempted to use it on a cake (was used and reused for 6 weeks).

Most of the kids I know think blue looks VERY attractive to eat. icon_lol.gif I have some really old yearbooks and stuff that say not to use blue much because it isn't appetizing.
If it really turned adults off they wouldn't be selling blue raspberry vodka.

And I've always liked blue roses.

I think we put lots of things on cakes which don't always look attractive to eat but we do it anyhow....makes cute cakes.

I would put blue anything on a cake or cookie before I used green. Green isn't appetizing at all to me and just reminds me of mold.

Well I think that if we had cake orders flying in we could turn away brides or customers that want blue roses. As for me I have done the whole blue roses thing and everyone loved the roses on the cake. I worked in retail and the moto in retail is : the customer is always right!!! So when they want a cake with blue roses, blue roses they will get.

I've heard this also, that people are uncomfortable eating blue food because there is no natural blue foods. (ever heard the joke about the color-diet? you can't eat any foods of a particular color for a month. In December, the color is "blue".)

But ...... I think "foods" differ from "decor". Case in point, is I had a bride years and years ago who wanted her cake tinted blue ....not the icing, the cake. I had heard this about blue food even back then and tried to talk her out of blue cake. No go. The cake was tinted blue. And she had a LOT leftover with lots of uneaten cake on the plates .... a blue cake was not appetizing to the guests. but they will down blue roses and blue decor like there's no tomorrow.

Some of these posts are cracking me up!!!!

When I was planning my wedding 2 years ago, I wanted to have blue roses so badly, but man they cost mucho $$$$$$$!!!!!!

I went with red roses instead and have always been bummed out that I did not get my pale blue wedding! My pale blue winter wedding turned to red roses in May and I regret it!

So yes, what a bride, kid, customer wants... I say let them have their blue roses!!!!! icon_lol.gif

I don't think that I would choose to do blue roses for a display, or a cake of my choice. But if that's what the client wants, that's what the client gets, who are we to judge? On a different, silly note - I thought that a "Junior Member" was someone under 20 or so, until it was my label, and I'm 47 - ha! Now I get it, I'm not a Newbie anymore . . . icon_smile.gif

Juds2323,
I think that picture has been edited to make the rose blue. It says in the article that the rose they're working on is a shade of mauve with the potential of creating a blue rose. All the roses they have now that are 'blue' are a purple or lavender.
Once they finally succeed in making a blue rose, I'll have to add a bunch in my rose garden. For all you fellow gardeners out there, untili they get a real blue rose I recommend Blue Girl, it's lavender (the buds are more of a blueish shade and it gets more purple as it blooms) and it smells great!

Maybe the 'no blue food' is a older rule of decorating. Years ago blue treats and candies were rarely, if ever, seen. Now look at all the candies and other treats we have now that are blue. It's not an uncommon color for food in todays world at all. Even M&M's are blue now.

Oh please my 2 cents....

With the greatest sarcastic voice I could muster I reply, "Never blue roses on a cake and always color in the lines. Lets get rid of creativity; all in favor of conformity - hip, hip, hooray."

(Oh for crying out loud....they are her rules not yours, so break them!!!)

Edited to add: Please read my tagline!

I once watched some special on TV about Mrs. Fields cookies. The rule on their M&M cookies is that you ALWAYS have to have 3 blue ones in the cookie. They did focus group studies and the cookies with the blue m&m's were the most appealing!

You lose credibility when you promise something you don't deliver; when you misrepresent something; when you don't keep your word. Losing credibility over blue roses? I don't think so!

I had to double check before posting this but I went to my parents house last night and I checked my dad's "don't touch it or you're in deep trouble" rose bush.... It does in fact have blue roses on it.... they are a purplish blue but more blue then purple (which is why I never dug it up and took it with me lol I love love LOVE purple lol) so I have to say even though some say real blue roses don't igsist.... My dad purchased a rose bush from Lowe's home and garden center in Easton Maryland about 3 - 5 years ago and it still blooms with purplish blue roses every year icon_smile.gif

I think cake decorating is all about being creative. I think that's hilarious that she is saying that because I don't think it will in anyway effect your credability. If someone sees all of your amazing cakes and just happens to not like your blue flowers, then they will probably order something different. Kind of funny icon_smile.gif

My hubby and kids fight over the "blues". M&M's, Skittles, Popsicles etc. They love the blues.

Credibility... hmmmm, what happened to the company that made GREEN and PURPLE ketchup?

Nothing! They're still a leader in the ketchup industry. If anything, they got a lot of attention, for awhile anyway.

Make the blue roses and attract some attention!

If you ever get the chance to speak with this instructor again, use the Five Why's method.

When someone gives you a dumb answer, ask them "why?" at least five times. No other words, no other questions, just "Why?" The very smart vice president of mfgr'ing who taught me this said, "By the time they answer the 4th why, you've cut thru most of the bullsh** and you're getting to the REAL facts of the matter."

I've watched people use this technique a number of times and it is an amazing thing to observe. And it works.

randipanda actually answered what I was going to answer: What about Wilton's Fantasy Flower that's taught in their Fondant and Gumpaste course? That's not real. Do we lose credibility if we choose to put that on a cake?

I would definitely use blue and I also saw the article resulting from a Google search where Australian and Japanese researchers have been able to finally create blue roses and there are purple ones that are very close to blue already.
