This is a very funny story 
and I agree the customer should have told you. I come from and have a racially mixed-up family and I am often asked if my children are mine! When I had my first a friend threw me a baby shower and had her daughter's baby dolls sitting around - there were white ones and black ones! It was very sweet and we all got a laught out of it. Also, when my son was born my first reaction to his skin color was that he was awfully white! The nurse burst out laughing and said that black babies are usually born very light and then get darker! My husband was in stitches over that one!
The bottom line is we all have to lighten up 
. I'm sure they will look back and laugh about it, if not then they are missing out.
Well, I just wanted to let you all know that this customer came to my house yesterday, I summoned up the nerve to ask for a picture! She said sure, and never mentioned anything else about it. She ordered two father's day cakes. She gave me pictures for these.
Good thing I didn't have to ask the race of her father or husband!!
ok, this was way too funny! I know it wasnt for you at the time but u are definately not wrong (as others have said) now me and my Dh are black but my son is WAy light with blue/green eyes and sandy hair.. when he was smaller he was WAY lighter and people used to ask my DH if he married somebody that wasnt black.. but then if someone looked at my Dh's dad, sister, grandmother and great grandmother OR my grandmother or great grandmother they would understand.. My sone even looked like his hairline hadnt grown in for a LONG time.. it was BLONDE!

#2... I'm white, my husband is mixed, his mother is black and his father is white... (we think LMFAO we've never met him but they say he's white lol) Anyway... My entire family thought my husband was mexican, I had to tell them he was black lol. My brother actually spoke spanish to him one day lmfao.... Our daughter is his 4th child. His oldest son is about the same skin tone as he is, his second child is a LOT lighter, his 3rd child is about the same as the 1st one lol.. now our daughter.... she was born with blondish brown hair and bright blue eyes and the fairest skin any mixed person could ask for lol.... she is so white I get comments all the time about "who is her father" thinking James isn't because he's darker then she is lol.... Now she has darker blue eyes and dark brown hair like mine and she got what people around here call "white people hair" lol I just smile and laugh. I explain to them I'm glad she got "white people hair" because I wouldn't know where to start if she got her grandmomma's hair type lol. Not to be insulting of any race at all with this I just find it funny that the customer didn't think to specify "this is for my white friend such and such" or plainly "the mother to be and father to be are both white so please make the baby with fair skin tone" or what have you.... You didn't think to ask because she was black you are black and you just assumed the friend would be black... not your fault I would think the same thing if a white friend didn't mention that the receiver of the cake would be a different race.... no biggie. She'll get over it if it upset her lol it's actually really cute 
Anyway I would love to see a pic of the cake! and I just wanted to let ya know that just because someone is classified as black doesn't mean they are deep in color and just cause someone is called a "white kid" she ain't white lol
Well, I beat myself up at first, but after I posted and everyone had me laughing, I realized that it was just an honest ASSumption. The customer did state that they got a laugh.
I asked for a picture when she came and ordered some cakes for next weekend. I hope she brings it then, and I'll post it. I'm assuming she's not mad, because she wouldn't be still ordering from me.
The whole skin tone thing is funny. My cousin and his wife are both dark skinned, and they just had a light-skinned little boy with green eyes. Well, the first thing everyone wanted to holler was that the baby wasn't his. It caused alot of drama, and then she produced a picture of her daddy. Her dad is dead, but he had light skin, red hair, and green eyes, and he's a black man.
Sometimes these traits skip generations and come back in children. You don't ever know what a child can end up looking like. People have probably got divorced because of stuff like this.
One things for certain though, WE'RE ALL BEAUTIFU., LOL!!!
yes we are all beautiful, and yes that type of stuff skips generations.. my sister, my cousins and i used to try and figure out which of our kids was going to have light eyes. my great grandmother had green eyes, non of her kids did, some of their kids (my moms cousins) did but nof of us (my cousins did) then MY kid did.. definately skipped gens

This was such a cute topic. I am one of those people that made a white baby for a black mother. Did not even think otherwise. White person ordered the cake.
To look at all of this on a different level - it really is great that we are not thinking about the color of skin! I think that is awesome. But I agree, as decorators, we need to be aware.
Yaaayyyy! Someone did it other than me! LOL!
Instead of asking race for the cakes, I say let's make all green and claim that welllllll, sometimes you never know. lol
Honestly I think that it is pretty funny and I'm glad that your customers were good humored.
