JodieF,

So tell us, have you made it to Chicago yet? How was the cake? This is one of my favorites to make and it is absolutely gorgeous. Very big and tall. I'm making one for a groom's cake in July.

That is too funny!! I've had days like that! The last one involved IMBC that actually made it to THE CEILING from the mixer...

LOL

I've had this problem also - too much gravity. I think it builds up in kitchens and around toddlers. I don't know what to do for it, though, but I have found that drinking wine DOES help. You did exactly what I would have done.

Thanks for the laugh!

I am laughling hysterically in my office. The folks around me think I'm nuts. I can see this so clearly! You painted a perfect picture. Thanks for the story and for the recipe! You handled this very well! My husband has done the same thing! Then when things calm down he "might" poke his head in the door and say "all clear yet". Thanks for sharing!!!

Okay.....back from my Conference. icon_biggrin.gif The cake made the 300 mile drive in perfect condition and had the bellman drooling when he helped me haul everything to our room (I sent him down a piece). The cake was wonderful and rich and totally over the top. I did think that the cake part was a little dry and TOO dense. Maybe it needed more buttermilk to make up for what splashed all over me!?!?!?! icon_lol.gif Who knows? I was so frazzled from making it I'm lucky it turned out at all! I think I would set the timer for less time and watch it next time, in case I just overbaked it a bit. The first time I make any recipe I bake it for the minimum time suggested in the recipe and adjust from there. If anyone has made it maybe you could let me know what you thought of the cake texture? I would really appreciate it.

Overall, everyone loved it. They were licking the plates. icon_rolleyes.gif

BTW....the dogs fur is SOOOOOOOO soft! Buttermilk bath anyone??????

Oh....a quick update for those of you that downloaded the recipe......I do think I overbaked my fudge cakes. I baked them the minimum time listed on the recipe, but I would do it for a shorter time next time. I will set the timer for 10 minutes less and then start checking. When I put in the toothpick, it was clean. I wrote another member who'd made the cake and she reminded me that there should be moist crumbs on the toothpick for a chocolate cake.
This cake is spectacular! I want to make it again, but without all the drama!!!! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

My kids are 23, 19 and 15. I learned many years ago to SHUT THEIR DOORS! What I don't know won't scare me or tick me off! icon_razz.gif

Of course, that was also the time I taught them to do their own laundry because I refused to go in their room to gather it all up anymore! icon_rolleyes.gif I have great kids, but they're pigs! icon_twisted.gif

Chocolate filled bath with champagne and strawberries on the side???? icon_rolleyes.gif There's ANOTHER thought!

My friends all sent me notes thanking me for the cake today. The DH took the leftovers to work yesterday (way fewer people where he works as opposed to where I work). Anyway, the DH forwarded me an e-mail from one of his co-workers.....*lol* the subject line was "when Jodie gets tired of you, please tell her she has another husband in the wings".

I guess he liked the cake! *rofl* icon_cool.gif

Well, I'm not sure I want someone who just wants me for my baking ability, but now I have 3 backup husbands...*lol*
One loves my cheescake, one loves my fudge and this one loves the Chocolate Fudge Cheesecake Cake.
The hubby gives me all the credit (and blame!) for his round tummy. His first wife wouldn't bake or cook, so he kindof hit the motherload with me! icon_lol.gif Shoot, I even met him in the cookbook section of Borders!

That story made me laugh! I even read it to my husband - he asked me whether I had written the story. Although, mine would have ended with the perfect cake doing a back flip onto the floor (that was how my cake turned out last weekend at 4 am after I had to bake the cake twice). I'm so glad yours turned out better!

I was hysterical! It was a horrible week - i was going to class on Saturday morning instead of Tuesday night because my grandmother had been sick. I baked the first cake and it somehow ended up landing on the floor when the cooling rack fell off the table. I yelled at my DH because his junk was all over the table (so naturally it was his fault).

I was also trying to bake a birthday cake for a friend of mine for a party the next night. So, at midnight, I started over on the second set of cakes for my class, then baked the third set for the friend. My mixing experience was quite like yours - sugar spilling, things blowing out of the mixer, in my face, down my shirt, running out of milk/eggs/sugar, trying to swap out and substitute things - total baking disaster. When the last cake came out of the oven, the 2nd set of cakes for class was cool enough to ice. At this point it was 4 am. I iced the cake, and got it absolutely perfect. I was so tired I could hardly see straight. But, I had baked 3 cakes, colored my icing, and I was all ready for class. I put everything away, and was just about to head off to bed at 5:30 am (I had to leave for class at 8:30) and I'm still not sure what happened, but suddenly the cake was airborne. It did a perfect spiral through the air and landed face down on the floor.

I stood there stunned for a moment - frozen in time. My dog had to jump out of the way . . . then realized she hit the jackpot and lunged for the cake. I then jumped into action and I had to wrestle her away and lock her in the other room (I'm still not sure I didn't trip over her in the first place as she hovered below the cake causing me to knock the cake off the table). I took a deep breath, prayed that when I flipped the cake back over, it would be good enough to take to class (I didn't care how much dog hair or dust it had, or anything else, I was going to use it for class). No such luck - splintered in hundreds of pieces. I picked it up, threw it on the table in utter disgust over the 2nd ruined cake of the evening, briefly contemplated baking another cake, realized I was out of icing, and out of powdered sugar, and out of eggs. I vacuumed up the crumbs, let the dog out of the other room, let her lick the leftover icing off floor then went upstairs and woke my husband up and spent the next hour crying.

I then got out of bed, showered, and left for class. I showed up with an empty cake board. When the teacher gave me a hard time, and asked me where my cake was, I might have growled before I said "all over the dining room floor." She was actually very kind and gave me her cake to decorate, but it was truly a tragic day - 2 cakes on the floor! And it was so beautifully iced! I was trying out the mud cake recipe. The cake scraps I managed to salvage tasted wonderful, but there wasn't enough that didn't hit the floor to make into a usable cake. Only about 1/4 of one of the cakes remained on the table from the first fall. SIGH - it was so sad.
