I have slowly been getting my feet wet with the cookie decorating thing. But I have stumbled on to some questions and I am sure with all the expertise out there I can get some answers...thanks in advance!

How do you get the deep red and black black in the frosting? Is there a certain brand or technique? I usually get a dark pink and gray when I try to make them. I noticed on the heart tuxedo cookies people are able to get them black. HELP.

Also, I know that when you want to transfer a design to a cake you can use piping gel, but how do you transfer a design to a cookie?

I look forward to the answers to my burning questions! icon_confused.gif

Some people swear by Americolor. I use Wilton's paste, and I usually only need a small batch at Any given time so I just add a lot of the paste to get the color I need. I find it easier to color small batches then add a bit more icing and adjust the colour as needed rather than trying to color a large batch in one go.

You transfer the pattern using piping gel in the same manner as you would for a cake. You will need to scale the design to fit your cookie.

I use Americolor. I can get a very nice black or red without adding half a bottle. And I like being able to add drops of color. If you run out of icing, it is easier to make more and match than when using paste.

I use wilton colors.
When I make black I add cocoa to the icing first and then add black coloring. You don't use as much black that way.

I use Americolor as well. I always make my icing the day before I decorate. This allows the color to "deepen."

I am one of those that "swear by Americolor"! I also make mine a day ahead, as the color will deepen over time.
