Mary Kay Icing

This icing recipe is also known as Poor Man’s Frosting and I LOVE this with “Sarah’s Red Velvet Cake TWEAKED,” which can be found here in the recipe section of Cake Central. This is a mildly sweet, non-crusting icing, much like a 7-minute frosting.

Mary Kay Icing

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 3/4 cup white vegetable shortening, such as Crisco
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/3 cup butter, softened
  • 2 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan, add the flour and 1/4 cup of milk and whisk until smooth. Add the remaining milk and whisk until well combined. Cook over medium heat until mixture is thickened. Cool completely.
  2. In a mixing bowl, cream the butter, shortening, and sugar on medium speed for several minutes. Add the vanilla and mix until combined. Add the cooled flour/milk mixture and beat on high for 5 minutes or until smooth and creamy. Spread on cooled cake.

If you are wanting a frosting that is not sweet at all, this may be for you. It tasted like cream to me.

This is a very old icing. The only difffernce is, my Grandmother never used crisco she only used butter, all butter. And she used it on Red Velvet Cake.

I have a similar question as gems7882. I've made my own fondant (because the stuff in the store is not only out of this world expensive, it tastes like wall filler and it just ends up getting thrown out). However, my fondant is VERY sweet, so I need a white covering for under my fondant that isn't sweet at all and I also need a filling for this kind of cake and sweetness.
