Hi Every1,

I went to Sam's club today, and they were completely sold out of Powdered Sugar. The lady said it would be in short supply because it comes from Louisiana!! I live in North Texas by the way. My Hubby went by Costco on the way home and they too were sold out. I hit the local grocery stores and there was none!!!! Has any1 else ran into this????

Not a problem on west coast as far as I know. But I'm always picking the stuff up if I see it so I have plenty.

I had no clue that it was manufactured or whatever in Louisiana, so I was surprised when there was none!! I hope they get more in soon or I'll have to switch to only IMBC!!

..just went bulk shopping today at BJ's Wholesale Club and they seemed to have about half of what they usually stock in 10X. They were in short supply of dairy items.....found the same to be true at Walmart and the grocery store today. Don't know if there is any connection or not!

Hey guys,

I found this clip online:

SUGAR LAND, Texas (AP) -- Imperial Sugar Co. on Friday said it has resumed operations at its Gramercy, La. cane sugar refinery after closing shop on Saturday to brace for Hurricane Katrina.
Imperial said it is moving out limited shipments from the refinery, located about 20 miles northwest of New Orleans, and will resume normal shipping depending on the availability of transportation equipment and fuel.

Here in Alabama it's like that all over the whole grocery store(s)....there are entire sections of food shelves that are empty. They'll get a shipment in of whatever it is and in barely 24 hrs they're empty again. We didn't have any sugar of any type at my grocery store until Tuesday of this week. I had to go to convenience stores that were open around here and see what I could find. Ended up making my own pwd sugar the other day...an experience!! lol But at least I know how to now! icon_smile.gif

OMG!! I wonder how ling it will last. Tomorrow I am going to stock up on regular sugar just in case! How did you make your own? My mom says she used to just blend and blend her granulated sugar when she was younger and powdered sugar was not readily available.

I'm sorry, I didn't say anything cause I thought ya'll knew. During all the Katrina coverage the financial analysts said a few times that we might see price increases in sugar and coffee as both ship from LA. I don't know if Domino is based in LA or that's it's main distribution point, but Domino was mentioned several times.

Being in the MW, I wasn't worried about shortages. I stocked up b/c Walmart has been selling Domino pwd sugar so cheap. I didn't want to pay over $1.20 for it. icon_razz.gif

Daniella, shouldn't have an effect here in Canada, unless it is cane sugar and even then. Our sugars - both cane and beet- are processed at plants here in Canada, our milk is from Canadian dairy farms, like our eggs, butter etc. Some of the things you might get from Walmart may be in short supply as they come in from the U.S.
However our gas and oil, even though it comes from Alberta, is going up in price just like the U.S. Nothing to do with the hurricane, just "Supply and Demand".
In Canada, any shortage on the shelves are likely due to the fact the kids have returned to school and university students in residents usually cause these shortages every year for a couple of weeks around Labour Day, when they go out to stock their supplies for their first time on their own.

To make my own pwd sugar....I just pour a bunch of it into my food processor and let it go and go until it looks very, very fine. Then I add cornstarch to it until it looks like what comes in the bags at the store....there's not a real fine science to it, I don't think...but I'm sure there's a "recipe" out there somewhere!! I can't remember for sure, it might have been on "Good Eats" with Alton Brown, but that's how they said it was made pretty much and proceded to make it themselves. Just glad I remembered that I saw that show! It's amazing that it popped into my head with everything else I have going on! I'm so bad about recipes....I'll have one staring me in the face, but I always end up adding a little more of this and a little less of that!! lol It must have been right, because the bc I made with it turned out exactly the same as usual! icon_rolleyes.gif

Daniela, haha, dang those university students, no K.D. left on the shelves either, haha!
But one thing that will likely affect all of us, is coffee, there is expected to be a shortage of that.

I think that this is something affecting just us here in the southern states. I'm sure that one facility in LA doesn't manufacture ALL the PS for all the states! Plus there are so many different brands as well, that's why other people aren't finding it to be a problem.
Hopefully we'll get our supplies back here in the south!

Maybe there is a shortage because all the cake bakers heard a rumor about the price going up and trouble with supplies so they are all stocking up! LOL. Just kidding.

I am laughing but I will be at the store first thing in the morning to be sure I can get what I need for this weekend!

If you want good sugar the only good place to get it is in Louisiana. Man, we grow the best sugar cane!! Nothing finer!!!

This hurricane isn't just effecting us folks in La., Ms, Alabama, TX it's effecting the whole US. I went grocery shopping last Sunday & there was bearly enough food on the shelves. I'm worried to be going grocery shopping on Sat. We have a lot of evacuees here in our town so organizations are donating food left & right BUT they did not think about the other citizians. We have to eat too. I'm worried about this food shortage. A lot of things come in through New Olreans & a lot of things are grown in La. I suggest everyone keeps stocked up on things. Especially if you live in the south.

Cindy, I liked your funny about the bakers buying all the supplies!! Too funny! icon_smile.gif

Squirrelly, we should beat them to it and grab as such of thier KD as possible as soon as it comes off the trucks!!!! That'll teach them to stay away from our powdered sugar!! icon_lol.gif

Haha, good idea! I am wondering though where our sugar cane comes from. I know that all of our sugar cane is produced elsewhere, just the beet sugar is both grown here and processed. But the sugar cane is purchased raw and refined and processed here for our Canadian market. So it comes from several places which makes you wonder how much they have ahead of time or if indeed, eventually the hurricane issues will be a factor. There are a number of warm climates where sugar cane is grown , it would depend on where they are getting it from. Something to think about.

Hey everyone,
Went on the Domino sugar website and e-mailed them asking about wether or not we could expect a shortage of sugar as a result of the hurricane and here is there response. icon_razz.gif

There may be a problem with the brownulated and the brown sugars. We have three main refineries. Chalmette in new Orleans was affected by katrina. Brownulated in particular was made only in Chalmette. We are going to move production to the other refineries. It may take some time until Chalmette is back in operation. As it was making 8M pds of sugar a day , it will probably affect the deliveries, mostly for the distributors in the South.

It may take at least three months for the refinery to be back on its
feet.
