Welcome, welcome, welcome, love your gallery, I recognise some of your cakes, I have the same books, good job, I love your basket of flowers, and I want to try out the bunch of flowers with the roses and iris's just waiting for an occassion to give it a go!

Wow, we really have a bigger following on here that I initially realised, bring on the Aussie's! icon_biggrin.gif

i think i'm going to have to nicole. My parents are in tamworth, so its just a 4 hour drive over the great divide. We are planning to rent a house for a week and set up base camp there. Its just an awful lot for me to cart from melbourne!
But i still have months to plan yet!

If there's time to plan and a week while you are there, can you send some of the stuff you need to your parents, rather than cart it on the plane with you, ie icing and stuff, obviously you'll need your tools with you, but some of the heavier stuff. Just an idea, keep asking though with all the Aussies on here I'm sure we can find someone near Coffs!! icon_biggrin.gif

Kylie,
If you are in no rush to make the flowers, try and see if your library has a copy of 'Making Australian Wildflowers for Cake Decorating' by Sue Oteri.

gingerkitten79. Be game. I am making a 3 tier cake with 6 little ones this weekend and taking it to Coffs Harbour on Wednesday then on to the Gold Coast and back to Coffs Harbour. It is not the first time and it won't be the last. I regularly take cakes to the Gold Coast or Coffs Harbour, Armidale. I have taken the top tier of a wedding cake to America. Just make sure if you have any delicate decorations on the cake that you carry them seperate and put them on when you get there and carry with you some icing and tools just incaes.

Thanks for the boost of enthusiasm Boring! Wow thats pretty impressive! You do alot of shows i take it?? My sister plans to set up a "basecamp" in coffs a week before the wedding. So i think i can bake at mums and then decorate there. But i have lots of time to plan for it!
I may have to call on you for transport tips!
Where did the name "boring" come from anyway??

Transport tips from Coffs to Armidale. One cake I did had extension work on it I thought that would not be good to travel so I changed it to a frill. The frill went from the top of the cake to the bottom. No trick it fell backwards on the box it was carried in. No problems had a trusty tool with me and pulled all the squashed pieces out. It looked better than the first time. Just make sure you choose your decorations to suit. I don't do any shows, these are cakes for family. Boring is a nick name, friend ugly me boring. Go for it, you'll be fine.

I forgot one thing a good cake decorator knows how to cover their mistakes. Where the frill broke I piped criss cross. It really did look like it was supposed to be there. Be a devil, you can do it.

Gingerkitten79, I always use non slip mat in the bottom of my boxes and then place the box on non slip matting. Another thing I have found handy is to place the boxes inside one of those plastic tubs with non slip matting on the base. (Have never had one move I me, touch wood lol) If you cant get the non slip matting pm me and I will be happy to get it and post to you.

thanks for that info cherylweddingplanner. I've been so busy have not had time to check the aussie thread. I've been baking like mad.

I have my first non family cake to make for next weekend and I'm very nervous. Family will always love what you make (or else they lie) but when it's for someone else.... my palms are already sweaty!!!

Hi there,
Another Aussie here! I haven't been on CC for a while, and have just come across this thread, it's great there are so many of us on CC!

For those you wanted to do Planet Cake classes but found them too $$$ I've heard that Faye Cahill holds classes too and are much more reasonably priced. Her studio is in Dulwich Hill (Sydney) or around that area. She used to be the owner of Planet Cake and does really gorgeous work. She holds classes in the less busy season (ie from around April) so not on at the moment. I haven't been myself, so can't comment on them directly.

you can buy the non slip matting at Spotlight, the have it by the roll. Lilis, not sure where in Melbourne you are but it might be worth trying to going the Association or Gulid but before you do make sure they do demonstrations on there meeting days. Here in Sydney the special days usually run out at $25 a day and you get 4 - 6 demonstrations of usually things to be shown what to do. A normal meeting is about $15 and you get at least 4 demonstrations. Some are every month and others are by monthly. It might be worth looking into for yourself. Now Red Red is the one that does show cakes.

Thanks Tish! I love your cakes too, especially the Elmo cake, I have a friend who would love one like that.

LiliS, here is the reply I got from Faye:

"I run classes from April to August each year, so I only have one more class which is already full. I can put you on the distribution list for next year. Please let me know if you have any particular classes you would like to attend, so I can schedule in subjects that there is a strong demand for, attaching a flyer from this year to give you an idea of the kinds of classes I have run in the past.

Kind regards,
Faye

Hi Boring! Yep, love the shows, but would love love love to see more decorators participating. Hopefully with the increase in popularity of classes, it means more people are getting into this cake addiction.

Hi Redred,
I love your cakes ! and congrats on the Easter show win this year. you deserved it. !
I love entering what shows I can as well, but no where near game enough to do a wedding cake or even flowers, though for the next Stitches and craft show at Rosehill I have been "thinking" of doing something different, can only but try eh.
I am all for people joining their local cake guild or association, i'm our local branch's president and even though we have a very small group, its wonderful and we all learn from each other at our meetings and of course the state rostered days are the best.
Roz.

I want to enter cake comps! I need to get decorating! I just feel i dont have enough hours in the day! i work a 9 to 5 job but it generally takes me an hour to get to and from work everyday. If only my lazy bum of a DB would get himself a job! Hes an artist which means alot of freelance work. I think its my turn to stay home and follow my dreams!
Where in the country are you rozben?

What a cool thread, quite amazing how many Aussies are here and there is a few more lurking about.
Redred I didn't know you'd entered Challenge you and I both entered in the same section, how weird is that??? The new schedule should be out by the end of the year so get your thinking caps on girls. It would be great to see more entries next year.
