I spent 3 days working on this cake. I have discovered that New Orleans humidy does not support fondant stuff sticking up out of a cake!!! I had to redo everything twice - the second time with wires thru everything. The cake had so much stuff on top that it collapsed slightly in the front.
I'm speechless!!! This is best fish cake I've seen. Super great job would never know that you had problems. Saving to fav - but I'm afraid to show it to my DD or I'll be asking you for instruction. :P
Wow. Thanks everyone for your compliements. I didn't expect such a reaction. The fish were not really that hard - just time consuming. I started with a picture printed from the computer about the size I wanted the fish to be. I then carved their bodies out of green floral foam so that they wouldn't be so heavy. I then cut out each side from fondant (no gumpaste or anything). I used the pic to cut fins and used a straw to make the scales. Painted with Wilton colors and a brush.
The cake didn't collapse in front or have you ever seen the ocean without a bit of movement? To me it looks as if it was meant to be like that, a bit wavy, certainly gives some more life to this awesome cake. if that is at all possible
This is by far one of my favorite cakes I have ever seen. I too live in the south and the humidity takes it's toll, but not on this one. You did a great job. Awesome detail. :)
The fish are absolutely stunning, as is the incredibly lifelike seaweed and coral and shells and and and....Love the bubble edge on top, the terrific sign, and yes I would have never guessed the cake collapsed a bit; I would have asked you how you got it to look like waves in the front :)
WOW! I wish I had a broader vocabulary so I could express myself!! This is so amazing! How did you support the fish? I love your design. Thank you for sharing!!!
