House Divided Groom's Cake
This was the groom's cake for my first ever wedding order. The bride is a Florida Gators fan (boo!) and the groom is a Clemson fan, so they wanted a house divided cake. This is a four layer, chocolate WASC cake (CASC???) with a whipped chocolate filling and white chocolate SMBC frosting. The decorations on top are fondant. I used this technique ( http://bit.ly/1SbtY1T ) to get the frosting white for the Clemson side of the cake, and it took way more blue food coloring than I anticipated to get the right color for the Florida side, but after sending my sister out to the store to get more blue for me, I was pleased with the end results. And after spending as much time as I did on that Florida logo, I have a renewed hatred for them! (Go Dawgs!)

First Wedding Cake
This was my first ever wedding cake, for a friend of a friend. 4 tier, WASC cake with raspberry filling and SMBC. This was my first time doing a cake this tall, so I actually completed an entire, full scale practice cake first to make sure I could anticipate anything that might go wrong. My coworkers and friends certainly appreciated this as they got to benefit from all the practice recipes and cakes! Everyone loved it including the bride and I couldn’t be prouder with how it turned out!

You Are My Sunshine Cake
This weekend yet another friend had a 1st birthday party for her little girl. This was a You Are My Sunshine themed pool party and we all had lots of fun! I used Jessica Harris' method for an offset chevron pattern from one of her Craftsy classes for the bottom tier. Still getting the hang of some of these methods. And the cake melted a bit on the way to the party- southern summers just weren't designed with ganache and modeling chocolate in mind! But everyone loved it and it still tasted great! My signature banana cake recipe with salted caramel frosted on bottom, and chocolate on chocolate for the top tier.

New York City Skyline Cake
Trying out another new technique from one of Jessica Harris' Craftsy classes. I made this for the birthday of a friend in my small group who is from NYC. It's a 6" vanilla buttercream cake with chocolate buttercream. Still working on my fondant technique, but I was very pleased with how the pin dot effect came out!

Hand Painted Palm Tree Cake
I made this for my sister’s birthday cake. She LOVES palm trees! I saw an image on Pinterest months and months ago that inspired me, and after watching Maggie Austin’s Craftsy class on hand-painted cakes I knew I wanted to try my hand at it for this cake. It’s a 4-layer chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream, covered in fondant and hand painted using Crystal Colors. It’s my 2nd attempt at covering a cake in fondant, and I ran into some issues that I definitely didn’t have the first time around (beginner’s luck??) but after about the 3rd try I was happy enough and the paint covered up the major trouble areas for the most part. I used Maggie’s paper towel finger painting method for the clouds and sky, and used various paint brushes for the trees.

Nurses Week Cake
I made this cake for my mom’s unit for National Nurses Week. I had quite a difficult time with the white chocolate transfer method that I found over on The Cake Blog. The white chocolate that I poured for the bottom layer I guess was still a little too warm and melted the EKG line that I had painted on first, so I ended up doing it over in plain white and then painting on the red EKG by hand once it was on the cake. Then I let the chocolate set up too long before wrapping the top tier (which is why there’s so much cracking and you can see the big blobs of white chocolate I had to use to glue the pieces together). I would have redone it completely if I had had more time, but thankfully mom and her coworkers are willing to be my guinea pigs without demanding perfection! I also got to try out a little bit of modeling for the first time and pretty pleased with the results. Definitely learned some lessons with this one but had a lot of fun trying out some new techniques!

Green Cake
I made this cake for a “green party” we were having at work for having met all our metrics for the past 2 months. I used it as an excuse to practice a few methods I have tried before (like the scallops on the 2nd tier and the sugar flowers) as well as try out a few new ideas (like jeff_arnett's upside down frosting method). It was my first time attempting a cake this large, and I’m very pleased with the results.

Mother's Day Cake
This was my very first attempt at a sugar flower. This is a banana cake with cream cheese frosting (my mom's favorite!) and a gumpaste peony on top, made for Mother's Day this past weekend. Thank you to Maggie Austin's "Decorating in Three Dimensions" class on Craftsy! It wasn't until after I finished that I went back to the class and realized I had the outer petals turned the wrong way, but I'm still VERY pleased with how it turned out! I'm working on basically a duplicate cake now with another peony, so I'll try turning the petals around and see how I like them!
