Double Barrel Birthday Cake
Two of my friends in pottery class have birthdays in November so I surprised them in class with a birthday cake. It was a double barrel 5" chocolate cake with a Bailey’s cheesecake center and chocolate ganache. The design was inspired by a cake that I saw online, simplistic yet classy I thought. The flowers were my first wafer paper ranunculus and I was quite pleased with how they turned out. I added a bit of silver leaf for a little something extra.

Red Hat Society Cake
This was a last minute request I had in November for a red hat society themed gluten free cake. I was able to make it happen in a short time frame because as luck would have it I had some purple gumpaste roses on hand. I made a few small white flowers to accompany the roses and it all came together nicely.

Jeremy
This cake really tugged at my heart strings. In November I learned that a previous student of mine had terminal bone cancer. The university held a special graduation ceremony for him as he was not able to complete the school year. A few of his close friends contacted me & asked if I could make him a cake and of course I could not say “no”. They requested his favorite flavor, carrot cake, and for it to say “Love you, Jerm” on it. Jeremy was not expected to make it to Christmas but he was determined to spend the holiday with his family and that he did. He passed away peacefully at home on December 29th. I learned at his funeral just what an extraordinary young man he was and I have never seen do many people in attendance for a funeral. I hope to see the day when cancer no longer takes so many from us. RIP Jeremy xx

Floyd The Cannibal Pumpkin
Meet Floyd. He’s my cake creation for the chemistry club’s Halloween party this year. I’ve seen many jack ‘o lanterns decorated this way and some cake versions so it’s not an original idea but I tried to put my own twist on him. Floyd is midnight pumpkin layer cake and his victim is RKT covered in fondant. His teeth are peanuts, a trick I learned from watching Halloween Wars. His arms and their stems are modeling chocolate and the leaves are gumpaste. Crushed Oreo cookies were used for the dirt. I’m not sure why I named him Floyd but after all the hours I put in to him he needed a name. Lol

Harley Davidson Birthday Cake
I made this cake back in October for Marie’s 50th birthday party. I met Marie through another friend and as I haven’t spent much time with her, I had no idea she was in to Harleys. The party was huge and the cake was very well received :-) The topper is a toy Harley, the bead borders are sixlets and all other details are fondant.

Fairy House Birthday Cake
I had a request for a fairy themed cake and was sent a couple of pictures each with a different component that they liked. I managed to include all the details they wanted and maybe got a little OCD with it! Lol The roses and leaves are wafer paper, the mushrooms are modeling chocolate and all the remaining details are fondant. This cake was really fun to make!

Birthday Cake
I made this little 6" cake for my friend Ashley’s birthday. I wanted to make her something that incorporated dragon flies as she really likes them. I found an inspiration cake online that was done with a floral bas relief and gold bugs that caught my eye. As the image did not have a watermark I am not able to give credit to that cake decorator for their design. To achieve the bas relief look I used the Sugar Flowers Mold by Karen Davies. Love that mold! I added a little spray of gumpaste hydrangeas for a pop of color. Ashley loves sweet potatoes so I tried out a new recipe called Southern Sweet Potato Cake that I iced with honey SMBC. It was soo good! She loved the cake :-)

Retirement Cake
This cake was made for a retirement party. The request was for a buttercream cake with fondant details and to include all the things that the retiree enjoys with the suggestion to include a map and/or globe as her main interest is traveling. To incorporate her other interests I used picture frame molds and then drew silhouettes of her interests to put inside them.

Elvis In Red Serge
This cake was a very unique request from my friend Scott. He needed a birthday cake for friend of his who was turning 30. He said she is an RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) officer and LOVES Elvis so could I do Elvis in red serge (their dress uniform)? I chose to do an older version of Elvis and am told she loved it! As a side note this is in no way meant to disrespect the red serge so I hope nobody takes offense to it.

Fisher Scientific Customer Appreciation Day Cake
This was my fifth year making their cake and each year it seems to get harder. I feel like I'm running out of ideas. The current rep doesn't give me a lot to go on which is frustrating as the rep I dealt with the first two years was so much more involved. Anyhow, what I came up with this year was to do their logo as a marquee sign shining above some of the products that they sell. The "F'" is RKT covered in chocolate to give it some stability before covering it in fondant. The box of kimwipes is cake with edible images to cover it. The bottle is RKT covered in fondant. All the other details (gloves, weigh boat, scoopula and Sharpie) are all gumpaste. The cake was very well received :-)

3D Minion - Até Já Inés
We had a visiting masters student from Portugal in our lab this summer. Long story short, I told her I’d make her a cake before she left. When Despicable Me 3 came out I learned that she really likes minions so then I knew what to make her as a cake. He’s dressed in traditional Portuguese clothing (unfortunately his black pants and shoes don’t stand out against the black cake board). The rooster is made from modeling chocolate and painted with a new (to me) product, Poppy Paints. He is the Rooster of Barcelos which is one of the most common emblems of Portugal. The minion is holding the Portuguese flag (card stock) and (gumpaste) lavender which is their national flower. Até já means “see you in a little while” instead of saying good bye.

Rubber Duck Cake
My nephew turned 18 this past weekend and requested a deer head, duck cake or something hunting themed. I decided to go with a duck (decoy) cake but me being smart a$$ed Aunt Kelly, I also made him a rubber duck fake cake as a joke. I presented him with it as if it were his actual cake and it was funny to see his reaction. The duck is made using a mold and he ended up keeping it :-)
