Blue Plaid
My sister wanted a cake for her friend. She said she loves plaid and her favorite color is blue. Other than that, I could do what I wanted. I had a lot of ideas of how to do the plaid, but I decided to just go with buttercream. I think it worked out ok, but I would use smaller tips next time.

Chocolate Cake
My son's birthday cake. He's a little tired of the summer heat and wanted to hurry fall along, so he asked for a fall-themed chocolate cake. I took advantage of the opportunity to try a chocolate wrap, something I've been wanting to experiment with for a while. It went really well! I know some things I would change slightly for next time, but now I have confidence and know I can do it successfully!

Jungle Animals Birthday
Another lesson learned... assemble and paint the animals BEFORE putting them on the cake. It's amazing what a difference it makes when you can (or can't) rest your hand on something when drawing/painting/positioning. But I was in a hurry and thought I could make it work. What it actually made was hard, messy work! 14" white cake with strawberry marshmallow filling.

13Th Birthday
Birthday boy asked for a red and black cake and a guitar. I also wanted to incorporate a graffiti look. I used the party invitation as inspiration for the graphics on the bottom tier. This was a great opportunity to try out the Wilton sugar sheets in my Cricut. Glad to say they worked great (and taste not bad, too)! Guitar is gumpaste, amp is RKT. Devil's food cake with marshmallow filling and vanilla buttercream.

Classical Music
My son's birthday cake (he asked for a music theme and green). I'm not particularly happy with how this came out... had trouble with humidity, so the sides didn't stay nice and straight. And I was trying some new things with painting the gold... some worked, some not so much. And I wish I had made the green fondant a little lighter (so the gold would show up better) and a stronger marble. I also found that I should have used more chocolate to attach the molded pieces. So although it didn't come out just as I had planned, this was a really good learning experience.

Everything Goes To #@&! After 40
A friend wanted something like the "toilet" cake for her hubby's 40th birthday. I wanted to make something that was appetizing. This was my solution -- youthful front all nice, after 40 back gone to crap. It was super fun to wreck a cake! Dark chocolate cake with cherry filling and vanilla buttercream.

Unicorns And Glitterrrrrr!
This is my daughter's birthday cake. I always tell people a story about when she was little: If you asked her what her favorite color was, the answer would always be "pink and purple and sparkly and shiny." That still holds true, but now she also loves turquoise. And zebra print. And when she saw the pillow cakes I had made, she wanted that. And glitter, LOTS of glitter. She also happens to get a huge kick out of a certain Progressive commercial. So this is how we put it all together. She was thrilled. You'd think she was still four. LOL

21St Birthday
My daughter wanted a cake for her friend's birthday. She asked for the margarita... I wanted to learn to make gumpaste hibiscus. I'll make a few changes next time, but it was a really good learning experience. Got to put to use some techniques I learned in demos by Dianne Gruenberg and Norm Davis.

75Th Birthday
My dad's birthday cake. Started out as something completely different and hated it, so I took my spatula to it and smeared everything together to start over. I thought it made a beautiful base for the piping -- so glad it worked out that way!. And I think I'll do it again this weekend (on purpose this time)! Lemon cake with lemon filling, lemon buttercream and vanilla buttercream. TFL

Zebra Birthday
I know, I know... another zebra print cake! But when that's what they ask for, that's what you have to give them. So I wanted to accomplish two things with this cake: 1. Make sure it really looked like zebra stripes and 2. Try to design something a little different than every other "zebra stripes with bright pink bow." I think I was successful. Chocolate fudge cake with chocolate chips and cream cheese filling (my cake version of my childhood favorite black bottom cupcakes) with buttercream icing. Rope and tassels are fondant dusted with silver luster dust. Bow is gumpaste with disco dust.

Black/yellow Birthday
My friend has been talking about her birthday cake (and reminding us her birthday was coming up) for months! She wanted me to make her a red velvet cake -- her favorite. And she's a huge Steelers fan, so she said it had to have some black and and yellow on it. I really wanted to do the pillow and I added the "gift" on top to really make it look like a birthday cake.
